Massachusetts Peace Action endorses Ed Markey for re-election to the U.S. Senate.
MAPA has worked closely with Ed Markey during his tenure in the Senate. He is a leading advocate for controlling nuclear weapons and has called for a “no first use” nuclear policy. Markey has criticized and consistently voted against excessive Pentagon spending and proposed shifting some of the budget towards meeting humanitarian needs.
Markey opposed the Gaza genocide and spoke out for a sane policy as early as mid-October 2023 when war fever was sweeping the United States. During the genocide Markey voted for three rounds of Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to cut off weapons shipments to Israel and assert Congress’s authority over decisions of war. Recently, Markey has been a leader in the Senate and in the Democratic Party on resisting Trump’s war in Iran. Markey went beyond strongly worded letters when Trump threatened that Iran’s “whole civilization will die” and called for removal from office. Markey co-authored the Green New Deal legislation which would build a strong coalition linking climate and economic justice. We believe that Markey is the best candidate in this race on issues of peace and justice.
Sen. Markey has consistently supported diplomacy, nuclear arms control, and Congressional authority over decisions of war.
Markey has been a strong advocate for restoring Congress’s constitutional authority over war. In 2026 he voted for a war powers resolution to stop U.S. military escalation with Iran and warned that the conflict was unauthorized and dangerous. Following U.S. strikes against Iran, Markey called the escalation a mistake and urged Congress to return to Washington to debate and vote on the issue.
Throughout his career, Markey has been a leading advocate for nuclear arms control and nonproliferation. He helped lead efforts supporting the Iran nuclear agreement and has promoted policies such as adopting a U.S. “no first use” nuclear weapons policy. He has also introduced legislation to reduce nuclear weapons spending and redirect resources toward addressing global threats such as climate change.
Markey has supported using diplomacy and international cooperation to address global conflicts and human rights abuses. He has advocated applying human rights standards to U.S. security assistance and raising concerns about abuses by foreign governments receiving U.S. aid.
Markey has criticized excessive Pentagon spending and has proposed shifting a portion of the military budget toward addressing global challenges such as climate change and humanitarian needs.
Sen. Markey is one of the Senate’s most prominent voices on nuclear weapons policy and arms control. He has introduced multiple bills aimed at reducing nuclear risks and limiting U.S. reliance on nuclear weapons, and he has worked with international partners to promote nuclear disarmament initiatives. His leadership on nuclear weapons policy and diplomacy makes him one of the most important pro-peace voices in the Senate.
Senator Ed Markey has demonstrated a long and consistent commitment to diplomacy, nuclear disarmament, human rights, and Congressional oversight of war.
In the Democratic primary Markey is running against Seth Moulton, current Representative for CD6. Rep. Moulton has consistently voted to send additional weapons to Israel, even while it has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 2023, and against cuts to the Pentagon budget.
While other candidates are running, Markey and Moulton are the frontrunners. We support Markey on his pro-peace, progressive record.
