Massachusetts has the reputation of being one of the most progressive states in the country, however beneath the surface, you’ll find corruption left unchecked and complacency in the face of the Trump administration permitted by conservative politicians.
Despite a Democratic trifecta with a super majority in both chambers of the legislature, the Massachusetts State House ranks dead last in effectiveness, passing the fewest number of bills of any state in the country.
At the root of this problem is a lack in transparency and accountability: secret committee votes are used to kill legislation before they can reach the State House floor, the legislature has exempted themselves from public records law, and State House leadership continues to stall the audit backed by 72% of voters in 2024.
Legislation made a priority by MAPA to divest our state from genocide, despite strong public support, never had a chance to be voted on the State House floor. Instead, it was killed in committee without advocates even given the courtesy of knowing how legislators on the committee voted.
Our state is the only blue state in the country that maintains a 287(g) agreement with ICE. Our state also has a special tax loophole for the sale of private jets. No public majority of legislators publicly say they support these things, but the lack of transparency in our government allows legislators to say one thing to their voters, and another to the billionaires, corporations, and lobbyists who run Beacon Hill.
That’s why it’s so important that we elect MAPA Board Member, Union leader, and Democratic Socialist Evan Mackay to the State House. Evan challenged corruption within their own union, UAW, and won. Now they want to take that fight to the State House by challenging a member of the clique of State House leadership that has stagnated progress on MAPA’s Peace and Justice Legislative Agenda and that is responsible for our state’s lackluster response to attacks from the Trump administration.
Evan will fight to divest our state from genocide, they were the first to speak in favor of a ceasefire resolution at the Cambridge City Council. Evan is a member of the board of the Massachusetts Sierra Club and in the State House will fight to end the special tax loophole for private jets and to beat back the political influence of the fossil fuel industry. Evan will fight for racial and social justice by opposing prison expansion and advocating for the rights of incarcerated people.
