Massachusetts Peace Action endorses Craig Swallow for Congress in Congressional District 9.
Craig Swallow resides with his husband and two adopted rescue dogs in New Bedford. He is the grandson of Portuguese immigrants who escaped Portugal’s fascist dictatorship. He shares that the intergenerational impact of this experience influenced him to study history and political science in college, to return to New Bedford from New York to co-lead the local Indivisible group and to run for political office against Bill Keating in the 9th district of Massachusetts.
Representative Keating has held the office for over 15 years, a career politician, he sat at the statehouse for twenty years prior. Representative Keating currently sits on the powerful Armed Services Committee. He is an annual AIPAC recipient and has never supported any proposed legislation that seeks to limit the transfer of weapons to Israel. Most recently, Keating voted against a resolution to remove the United States armed forces from Lebanon.
Craig Swallow has spent his years since college as a high school history teacher and restaurant manager. Despite his not having held elective office, or perhaps because of it, he is passionate in his beliefs and optimistic that as part of an elected wave of working class, progressive candidates to Washington, he can play a role in moving this country away from endless wars and our government’s complicity in the genocide in Gaza. Swallow supports universal healthcare through Medicare for All, universal childcare, the Green New Deal and tuition-free public college. Equally important, Swallow is strongly opposed to the “structural racism” of Trump’s mass deportation program. He favors the abolition of ICE and an expansion of pathways for immigrants to achieve citizenship. He also supports an end to PAC money in elections for public office.
