Massachusetts Peace Action endorses Alison Leary for State Representative in the 10th Middlesex District.
Alison Leary resides in Newton with her husband, son, and cat in Newton’s Nonantum village. She is a five-term Newton City Councilor-at-large, first elected in 2013. She is currently the vice chair of the Land Use Committee and serves on the Public Facilities Committee. Prior to getting elected to the Newton City Council, she served on the Board of the Newton League of Women Voters and as the chair of its environmental committee, the Board and vice president of the Newton Conservators, an active member of Green Newton, and two years on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Sierra Club.
Alison Leary is an advocate for Medicare for All, supporting MassCare’s bill that provides such for residents who work 20 hours or more per week in the State without premiums, co-pays, or deductibles. One of her key focuses is also the climate crisis. Her efforts range from banishing single-use plastics to advancing climate resilience. She belongs to Gas Transition Allies, an alliance of organizations and experts devoted to transitioning from fossil fuels.
In answer to questions from MAPA members, she affirmed that she would have opposed the Massachusetts House bill relative to the International Holocaust Remembered Alliance definition of antisemitism (H. 1763) and expressed willingness to put pressure on Washington to curb military spending that “sucks resources from healthcare, education, and infrastructure.” She has also noted she will not accept contributions from AIPAC or its affiliated organizations, military contracting corporations, other businesses not aligned with her values, or lobbyists opposed to Medicare For All. She has sponsored the Newton city resolution on Back from the Brink, addressing the dangers of nuclear weapons, and supports H.317 on the federal level. Importantly, Alison supports the necessity of citizen input on any new nuclear power in Massachusetts, saying, “the public must be involved in any decision.”
