Merrimack Valley People for Peace Commemoration Vigil
Via Merrimack Valley for Peace
“On Wednesday, August 6th, the Merrimack Valley People for Peace will hold a vigil in front of the Old Town Hall in Andover Center from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. The vigil commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first use of nuclear weapons in war and the destruction of Hiroshima, Japan at the close of World War II. The United States bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the only deployments of atomic weapons in history. It is estimated that more than 90,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and more than 60,000 people were killed in Nagasaki. Testing and manufacture of nuclear weapons has continued to damage the environment since. Atomic weapons now are much stronger and numerous, so a continuing danger to all life on earth. More countries now have nuclear weapons and others are working to develop them. The vigil is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring signs.”
