These two candidates are both strong peace champions running against conservative, pro-militarist Republicans in swing states. A victory by either or both would have national significance.
As a social worker and non-profit professional, Kara Eastman has an impressive track record of serving the American public. In Congress, Eastman will apply that dedication to keeping Americans safe by supporting smart diplomacy and a fully funded State Department, reclaiming Congress’ authority on war, and prioritizing funding for human needs like healthcare and education.
Civil rights lawyer Mike Siegel is ready to fight for equal opportunity and rights for those he would represent. He knows diplomacy is the best way to bring global stability and is ready to reclaim the Constitutional war powers granted to Congress. He understands that the sprawling endless wars the U.S. wages cost countless lives, taxpayer dollars, and international respect. We cannot achieve the true justice needed at home while we are caught up in these wars.
“Let’s rebuild the State Department and our diplomatic corps,” Siegel says. “Let’s revamp our foreign aid spending to encourage the development of civil society and local economies. And instead of over-spending on war industries, let’s invest in the domestic safety net and the conditions for peace around the world.”
Siegel wants to cut at least $200 billion from the military budget, including the OCO which he knows “exists as a virtual slush fund for Pentagon expenditures.” He wants to see a “just transition” of funds “that would invest in domestic programs (health care, environment, infrastructure) that will provide quality jobs in affected communities.” He also wants to strengthen “of the False Claims Act to ensure that waste and abuse by government contractors is reigned in.”
He’s also a true progressive all around and will fight for the most vulnerable. In 2018, he fought hard for voting rights at the historically-black college Prairie View A&M University when Texas officials tried to suppress student votes, and vows to continue work on protecting the right to vote — which is critical for this election.
