The Responsible Investment Bill (S.767/H.1264), or “An Act Promoting Responsible Investment,” is sponsored by Sen. Jehlen, as well as Reps. Montaño and Sabadosa. The bill in both the Senate and House has been referred to the Joint Committee on Financial Services.
This bill aims to require the state Public Fund and the Board of the Public Fund – the state agencies responsible for overseeing the pension investment portfolio – to divest pension funds from entities involved with the manufacturing, producing, or selling of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The bill also requires disclosure of all current investments in WMD entities and develop a policy to prevent future investments.
In this case, WMD expand beyond nuclear weapons to any chemical, and biological weapons, as well as any other explosives, incendiaries, or poison gases.
