Vernon K. Walker for City Council

MAPA endorses Vernon K. Walker for Cambridge City Council.  His mission is to address climate change and ensure the inclusion of marginalized voices in policymaking. As the climate justice program director for Clean Water Action, a climate justice organization, Vernon recognizes the urgent need for the implementation of climate adaptation policies to protect residents from extreme weather.  A racial justice advocate, he will support the existing commission to support Black men and boys in Cambridge, and advocate to create one to support Black women and girls.   To address the affordable housing shortage he advocates expanding rental vouchers and homeownership assistance.   Vernon has been a member of MAPA’s Board of Directors since 2019 and has MC’d our annual dinners and spoken at rallies and conferences.

Drew King for School Committee

MAPA endorses Drew King for Cambridge School Committee. A graduate of the Cambridge Public Schools, Drew has been a leading advocate for defending and improving public education for years. His priorities include: addressing the persistent racial and economic inequities in the school system, which were exacerbated by Covid; ensuring a holistic, culturally responsive and rigorous curriculum; reducing reliance on high-stakes standardized testing; and working for better pay and working conditions for educators, who have had to start the school year without a contract. In office, he plans to collaborate with MAPA to raise issues of police and military recruitment in high schools, the war economy, and promoting education and cultural exchange programs between high school students here and in Cuba and Latin American countries. He has been active with MAPA for several years and has written six articles for our website and newsletter. He worked for Peace Action New York State on a nuclear disarmament conference in 2015.
