The PROTECT Act (HD.5608), or “An act to protect the civil rights and safety of all Massachusetts residents,” is sponsored by Reps. Vargas and Garcia. The bill has been referred to the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.
As the climate surrounding the issue of immigration and mass deportation worsens it is important that the Massachusetts government works to protect our immigrant communities. Violence at the hands of federal immigration services should not be tolerated and it is time to enact state protections to stop it.
The Protect Act will prohibits police, court, and correctional officials from initiating contact with ICE and feeding them our personal information. It also prohibits civil immigration arrests at courthouses unless supported by a judicial warrant, as well as other key protections.
