SUMMARY:The US and El Salvador: Parallels on Political Persecution and Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 8th\, 7pm EST\n \nPresidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety\, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is\, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process. \nJoin Lourdes Palacios\, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador\, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families. \nHear from Mneesha Gellman\, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative\, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing families of prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities. \nWe will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action\, beginning September 15th\, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved! \nWe won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes\, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:Warning! Graphic Content!
DESCRIPTION:An event with award-winning cartoonist Dwayne Booth.\n  \n \nWhat is the future of political cartooning\, protest art\, and visual satire? How can pictures rendered in celebration of the precious vulnerability of the human experience make crystal clear the toxic barbarity of the military and retail industrial complexes\, both built on the hideous notion that the commodification of people everywhere and the willful disenfranchisement of their natural inclination towards peace\, love\, and understanding is better for business – better business being predatory capitalism and capitulation to hierarchy? What can be done to assert the importance and indispensability of the artist’s unique role in a free society as both a witness and predictor and\, in some circumstances\, instigator of all the comedy and tragedy that motivates our politics\, shapes our cultural identities\, and informs\, for better or worse\, the internal voice that shames\, praises\, and confounds our tenuous relationship with truth\, beauty\, and treachery every moment of everyday? \nMr. Fish \nDwayne Booth has been a freelance writer and cartoonist for twenty-five years\, publishing under both his real name and the pen name of Mr. Fish with many of the nation’s most reputable and prestigious magazines\, journals and newspapers.  His work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Village Voice\, the LA Weekly\, the Atlantic\, The Nation\, Vanity Fair\, Mother Jones\, the Advocate\, Slate\, Truthdig\, ScheerPost\, and The Chris Hedges Report.  He has also published with Information for Social Change (British journal)\, Internazionale (Italian magazine)\, and Umanita Nova (Italian newspaper). \nHis awards include the Los Angeles Press Club for editorial cartooning\, the Grambs Aronson Award for Cartooning with a Conscience and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Editorial Cartooning.  He has curated exhibits exploring the history of political cartooning for the University of Southern California\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the University of Connecticut. \n \nRegister for this event \n \nBooth’s most recent book is Nobody Left: Conversations with Famous Radicals\, Progressives and Cultural Icons About the End of Dissent\, Revolution and Liberalism in America\, Fantagraphics Books. \n  \n

How?\nWhy are we making calls today?\nCongress is advancing a budget proposal that would gut Medicaid and SNAP benefits for no other reason than to fund more tax breaks for billionaires. Instead of addressing the real culprits—the ultra-rich and corporations who are driving up costs and prioritizing profits over people—these cuts target working families and communities already struggling to get by. Any cuts to Medicaid and food nutrition benefits put millions of people at risk and will result in people losing access to healthcare and food. \nWho are we talking to?\nWe are calling constituents who are most impacted and most likely to oppose these cuts and may be willing to contact their Senator\, especially those whose Senators have not committed to fully protecting Medicaid and SNAP.\n \nWhat are we talking about?\nWe are making sure constituents understand that their Senator has not committed to fully protecting Medicaid or SNAP benefits. SUMMARY:GLOBAL ECO-RESTORATION AND POWER DYNAMICS: Critical Ecosystems in Brazil\, Senegal and the US
DESCRIPTION:Climate disruption is increasing and with it so is polarization\, both within the US as well as among nation states. Now more than ever it is incumbent upon us to highlight successful efforts to create a more sustainable\, just\, and peaceful world. \nImportant initiatives in regenerative agriculture\, agroforestry\, soil restoration\, and related practices are making significant contributions to climate adaptation\, often contributing to the resilience of communities and international collaboration. \nThis webinar\, a joint project of the MAPA Peace & Climate group and of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (Bio4Climate)\, will focus on locations outside the US where regenerative practices largely based on local initiatives have been successful on a significant scale. \nOur panelists will address a number of issues including the following: \n\nWhat aspects of these projects worked well and less well?\nHow were local communities engaged\, especially those from marginalized groups?\nWere there any significant collaborations with organizations in the Global North—and if so\, are these collaborations continuing during the second Trump administration?\nAre there any impacts within these regions of US foreign/military policy\, e.g. local US military bases?\n\nSpeakers: \nBeck Mordini (moderator)\, Executive Director of Bio4Climate. She has worked on protecting biodiversity at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and protecting undocumented workers in Washington State. \nJohn Leary\, Founder and Executive Director of Mother Trees\, is an advocate for sustainable agriculture with 20+ years experience in the field. He has dedicated his life to helping communities around the world and designing and implementing landscape restoration programs that rehabilitate farms and restore forest ecosystems. \nOusmane Aly Pame\, PhD\, is distinguished professor of literature at the Université of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar\, Senegal and the founder and President of REDES (Réseau pour l’Emergence et le Dévelopement des Ecovillages au Sahel). A respected regional community leader and former mayor of the eco-town of Guede Chantier\, Dr. Pame has been instrumental in fostering sustainable development in the Sahel region. \nRob de Laet\, is a Dutch entrepreneur\, climate strategist and project lead at Cooling the Climate. Together with Peter Bunyard and others\, Rob is developing the Cooling Climate Chaos project aimed at rapid restoration of the earth’s water cycles and regeneration of the biosphere. Their book Cooling the Climate: How to Revive the Biosphere and Cool the Earth Within 20 Years was published in November 2024. \n \nRegister for this event.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Professor: Will Ukraine's Far-Right Accept or Derail a Negotiated Peace with Russia?
DESCRIPTION:Professor Marta Havryshko\, a Ukrainian History Professor specializing in Holocaust Studies and gender and sexual violence toward women during and after WWII in Ukraine\, now teaches at Clark University in Massachusetts. She will speak about the origins of the Ukraine War prior to the Russian invasion of 2022\, including the influence of ultra-nationalist factions; the current military and political situation in Ukraine; and the prospects for a negotiated settlement of the war. \nRegister to attend. \n\n\nOf special interest may be her views on: \n1. The long history of Ukrainian ultra-nationalists: their founding by Stepan Bandera and support for the Nazis during WWII\, including the murder of an estimated 100\,000 Jews\, Poles\, and others; fighting the Soviets after the war and receiving major support from the U.S. CIA to undermine Soviet control of Ukraine; and their being welcomed as exiles in the U.S.\, Canada\, and elsewhere.  In 2024 in the Ukrainian city of Lviv\, neo-Nazi Ukrainians openly hosted an international conference of far-right proponents of racism and anti-semitism. \n2. The longstanding division in Ukraine between those who want to align with the West and those who want to remain close with Russia for linguistic\, cultural\, religious\, economic\, and political reasons. This division came to a head during the Maidan protests of 2014\, the unconstitutional ouster of the elected government\, and the war in Eastern Ukraine for the last 11 years that led in part to the Russian invasion of 2022. \nRegister to attend.

SUMMARY:The Militarization of Europe and The Workers' Fightback: Lessons and Connections for the US
DESCRIPTION:As Europe is increasingly drawn into the expansion of NATO and into the Ukraine war\, workers are increasingly rebelling\, seeing evaporate not just the peace they’ve experienced since the end of WWII begin but also the Cold War creep back\, while their economies increasingly falter. Organized and unorganized they are beginning to fight back\, while at the same time right wing forces are gaining some foothold in Europe as in the US. \nWorkers in the US have not known peace now for many decades\, with the US involved in endless wars all over the globe\, endless billions of tax dollars flowing into production and export of weapons\, and real wealth continuing to flowing into fewer and fewer hands. US workers rage against the government\, the true nature of their wealth decline obscured by rightwing rhetoric and misinformation. \nAre there lessons we can learn from the workers’ fightback in Europe? Are there experience to he shared from our own increasing fight back? Can workers’ rage be channeled more constructively? How? SUMMARY:To Win Our Survival: Building the Next Era of our Movements
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, facilitators Daisy Carter and Rebecca Harris from The Climate Mobilization Project will invite participants to reflect on the moment we’re in\, and where movements for peace and climate justice can go from here. Building on Climate Mobilization Project’s work with food sovereignty\, mutual aid\, climate justice and anti-war groups in Kentucky and Virginia\, we will share tools for participants to explore their role in supporting survival programs that expand access to climate disaster preparedness\, food\, care\, and more while growing movements for climate\, economic\, and racial justice. \nSurvival programs are a bold new approach to growing movements that have enough people power to fight back.Groups across the U.S. have come together to build a mass grassroots movement with the power and resources to win our survival. We are growing this movement by organizing people into grassroots projects that grow a regenerative economy and culture; expand food\, energy\, water\, and land access and sovereignty; and fight back together against the systems that threaten our lives and communities. \n \n  \nDaisy Carter (she/they) is a New Orleans native\, queer multi-disciplinary artist\, yogi and climate justice organizer working at the intersections of mutual aid\, disaster resiliency\, African-American herbalism\, and grassroots organizing. Daisy is inspired by the black radical movements of the so-called U.S and African diaspora\, reimagining what healing + self-determination look like for frontline\, BIPOC (black\, brown\, and people of color) communities who are most vulnerable to climate disaster. For the past few years\, they have been organizing around mutual aid\, environmental + climate justice\, and building BIPOC and marginalized leadership throughout Kentucky. In 2021\, they founded Rise and Shine\, a community-led mutual aid organization building power and solidarity with low-income\, BIPOC\, LGBTQ+\, and other marginalized communities in Bowling Green\, Kentucky and beyond. She has also led numerous political campaigns\, direct actions\, and led outreach + communications strategy for organizations such as The Sierra Club\, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth\, and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for a Moral Revival. At the Climate Mobilization\, she is supporting programming\, the development of the Movement Incubation Program\, and the creation of climate survival projects. \nRebecca Harris (she/her) is Resource Organizing Director and Co-Leader at Climate Mobilization Project. She first began organizing at age 16 during the movement to end the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. After years of organizing for economic justice and housing rights\, she joined Climate Mobilization Project as Organizing Director\, a role in which she coached dozens of local climate groups\, launched the campaign for a national Climate Emergency Declaration\, and supported the organization in its increasing focus on racial and economic justice and anti-militarism. Rebecca previously worked as a journalist covering equity in Chicago public schools and as the Development and Communications Manager at Latino Union of Chicago\, an immigrants’ and workers’ rights organization. She is a 2017 graduate of the Reframe Mentorship in strategic communications. \n \nRegister to attend.

SUMMARY:The Racket\, with Matt Kennard (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, Matt Kennard has told us he must reschedule his webinar with us. We’ll make arrangements with him asap and let you know when he’ll be with us. \nBut\, in the meantime… We have an alternative webinar for you tomorrow.  WIRN activists Ken Jones and Melody Shank recently returned from a 2-week trip to Hebron in the West Bank of Palestine\, part of a Community Peacemaker Team (CPT) delegation. They recorded a conversation with CPT member Mona El-Zuhairi about the trip and the realities in Hebron. So\, instead of having Matt\, they’ll do a webinar showing that recorded conversation\, followed by a Q&A with Melody and Ken about their trip to Palestine. The program will be held at 8pm! \nIf you’ve already registered for the Kennard webinar\, you needn’t do anything. An updated link has been sent your way! If you’d like to register for the program on the West Bank\, click here!

SUMMARY:Women in Conflict Zones
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nOn March 19 at 12pm ET\, an important event will take place to amplify the voices of women who have been affected by conflict in various parts of the world. The Women in Conflict Zones webinar aims to shed light on the profound impacts of war on women and children and to discuss measures being taken to mitigate these effects. \nThe webinar will feature speakers from a diverse array of countries\, including Belarus\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Gaza\, Lebanon\, Mozambique\, Nigeria\, South Korea\, Sudan\, and Syria. Each speaker will have five minutes to share their experiences and insights regarding the unique challenges faced by women and children in their respective regions due to ongoing conflict. This platform not only serves as a means to share stories but also as a call to action for global solidarity and support in ending violence and fostering peace. \nWomen from various conflict zones will provide firsthand accounts of the struggles and resilience of those living amidst war. Their testimonies will highlight the physical\, emotional\, and social tolls that armed conflicts impose on women and children\, who are often among the most vulnerable populations during such crises. The speakers will also discuss initiatives and efforts being undertaken within their communities to promote safety\, healing\, and long-term peace. \nThis webinar takes place during the second UN Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034)\, which focuses on “Recognition\, Justice\, Development.” The over-representation of African countries in the list of conflict zones underscores the critical need for targeted efforts and interventions to address the systemic issues that perpetuate violence and instability in these regions. The webinar aims to bring attention to these issues and to mobilize support for African women and children who bear the brunt of wars and conflicts. \nRegister to attend. \n \nSpeakers \nOlga Karatch (Belarus); Cyrille Rolande Bechon (Cameroon); Raissa Kasongo and Yvette Mushigo (Democratic Republic of the Congo); Hanan Awwad (Gaza/Palestine); Hala Kilani Hala and Shirine Jurdi (Lebanon); Namatama Sakabilo (Mozambique); Zullaihat Muhammad Ohiare (Nigeria); Cho Young-mi (South Korea); Reem Abbas (Sudan); Oula Ahmad (Syria) \nSponsored by World BEYOND War\, Southern Anti-Racism Network\, International Peace Bureau\, Convention for Pan-Africanism and Progress (CPP)\, and CODEPINK \nCo-sponsored by MAPA

SUMMARY:War is Not Justified by Party Politics
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nWhy have our movements for peace\, justice and the environment let party politics lead us into a pro-war position? Why does party politics lead us to support wars\, or at least not oppose them\, purely on the basis of which party is conducting them? This growing polarization is leading us to support or oppose other critical policies as well\, purely on the basis of what party those policies are identifies with — rather than a rational and moral assessment of the issue at hand.  \nThis webinar looks at the contrast between the bi-partisan militarism of the United States\, on the one hand\, and the starkly different governing philosophies of the two parties\, on the other.  A critique of the Labor Movement’s relationship to this problem offers a long-term case-study\, but one also increasingly relevant to the environmental movement\, and even the peace movement.  The current setback for the Democrats offers us a chance to reflect on what our core values are and how we navigate our relations with party politics going forward. \nDon’t miss it. \nRegister to attend. \n \nHarris Gruman is the Executive Director of the Service Employees International Union Massachusetts State Council.  In that role he has helped lead campaigns to win union rights for child care providers and rideshare drivers.  In 2013\, he founded and has since helped lead the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition of labor\, community and faith organizations\, which has nearly doubled the minimum wage to $15-per-hour\, created the most extensive paid family and medical leave program in the United States\, and won a constitutional amendment to raise tax rates on the top One Percent. In 2024 Harris joined the board of directors of Mass. Peace Action. \nThis webinar is cosponsored by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 509.

SUMMARY:Eradicating Gaza: How to Remember and Forget Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nA discussion with Prof. Omer Bartov. As we’ve been witnessing a genocide in Gaza for the past 15 months\, it’s timely to reflect on the politics of the use of the word “genocide”\, and the use and misuse of the memory of the Holocaust in WW2. \nProf. Bartov will also expand our thinking about the development of Zionism over time: as a settler colonization effort\, as a mechanism for helping Jewish refugees and as an ideological national movement. \nOmer Bartov is an Israeli-American historian. He is the Samuel Pisar Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University\, where he has taught since 2000. Bartov is a historian of the Holocaust and is considered a leading authority on genocide.

SUMMARY:The Urgency of Peace Negotiations to End the Ukraine War
DESCRIPTION:This webinar on the Ukraine/Russia war takes place only days before the war’s third anniversary. Retired Army Lt. Colonel Daniel Davis will discuss the urgency of peace negotiations before Ukraine loses even more territory and soldiers to Russia\, and to prevent the risk of the war escalating into a far more dangerous one — even nuclear war — between the US/NATO and Russia. \nLt. Col. Daniel L. Davis (retired) is a senior fellow and military expert at Defense Priorities and host of the Daniel Davis Deep Dive show on YouTube.  He served for 21 years\, including deployments to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.   He is the author of The Eleventh Hour in 2020 America. His work on defense and foreign affairs has been published in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, and other major media outlets\, and he is a frequent guest commentator on NBC News\, BBC\, Fox News\, Fox Business News\, CNN\, and other television networks. \nRegister to Attend:
