SUMMARY:Veterans Healthcare Choices: Privatization and Its Negative Impact on Women Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Women’s Health Justice\, a subcommittee of MAPA’s Fund Healthcare Not Warfare campaign\, examines women’s health from the perspective of justice – with the awareness that peace is a fundamental issue of health. The cost of U.S. militarism drains economic resources at the expense of health and lives. Through awareness and understanding of the culture that promotes war\, we examine the intersection of peace and women’s health\, which is justice. Our work offers paths of action that can be taken to oppose militarism and to nurture health and enhance justice. \nIn this webinar\, veterans’ health care policy analyst Suzanne Gordon will delve into the Veterans Administration specialized efforts to treat female veterans\, and how this care and expertise is being lost due to this transition to private sector care. \nCase in point: one out of three women veterans has experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault during military service. Every VA mental health provider is required to take basic military sexual trauma (MST) training and some specialize in this area. However\, the VA MISSION Act of 2018 established a private sector network\, the Veterans Community Care Program\, that contracts private-sector therapists who typically have no MST training. \nFor over a decade\, opponents of the integrated healthcare system run by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have assured veterans that privatizing their care through widespread outsourcing to private sector providers will give them more healthcare choices\, forming a new network of timely\, high quality\, and ultra-convenient care. But if more VA care is outsourced to the private sector\, will veterans\, in fact\, enjoy “a vast array of healthcare choices\,” as one privatization advocate claimed? Will they drive shorter distances for their medical or mental health appointments? And will they see reduced wait-times? Finally\, are there really thousands of doctors\, therapists\, and other clinicians ready and able to care for the nine million American veterans currently enrolled in the VA? The Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute (VHPI) released a comprehensive\, 50-state report entitled: “Veterans’ Health Care Choice — Myth or Reality? A State- by- State Reality Check of the False Promise of VA Privatization.” It definitively answers these questions. \nSuzanne Gordon is a senior policy analyst at the VHPI\, an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing\, and an award-winning journalist. She has authored or coauthored 11 books\, the most recent being Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health\, Healing\, and Hope to the Nation’s Veterans. Together with Lisa Hayes\, she has written a play about patient safety and teamwork entitled Bedside Manners. \nRegister to attend: \n \nRead the report Veterans’ Health Care Choice — Myth or Reality? Click on Massachusetts in the graphic on this page to see the report for the Commonwealth.

SUMMARY:The Trillion Dollar War Machine
DESCRIPTION:How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home \nAmerica spends a trillion dollars a year on its military. This extraordinary spending not only detracts from our ability to address pressing social problems but compels us into foreign wars to justify our vast arsenal. Sold to us in the name of “security\,” our military industrial complex actually makes us far less safe. \nTop policy experts William D. Hartung and Ben Freeman will discuss their new book The Trillion Dollar War Machine\, which follows the profits of militarism from traditional Pentagon contractors\, who receive more than half of the Pentagon’s budget\, to the upstart high-tech firms that shamelessly promote unproven and destabilizing technologies. They unmask the enablers of the war machine—politicians\, lobbyists\, the media\, Hollywood\, think tanks\, and so many more—whose work enriches a wealthy elite at the expense of everybody else\, spreading conflict around the world and embroiling America in endless wars. A damning tour de force\, The Trillion Dollar War Machine shows who is pulling the strings and pushing for war\, and offers a blueprint for how we can shut down the war machine and restore American security and prosperity. \nWilliam D. Hartung focuses on the arms industry and US military budget. He was previously the director of the Arms and Security Program at the Center for International Policy and the co-director of the Center’s Sustainable Defense Task Force. Bill is the co-author\, with Ben Freeman\, of the recently released The Trillion Dollar War Machine: How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home. He is also the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex (Nation Books\, 2011) and the co-editor\, with Miriam Pemberton\, of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War (Paradigm Press\, 2008). And Weapons for All (HarperCollins\, 1995) is a critique of US arms sales policies from the Nixon through Clinton administrations. \nBill previously directed programs at the New America Foundation and the World Policy Institute. He also worked as a speechwriter and policy analyst for New York State Attorney General Robert Abrams. Hartung’s articles on security issues have appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, The Nation\, and the World Policy Journal.\nHe has been a featured expert on national security issues on CBS 60 Minutes\, NBC Nightly News\, the PBS Newshour\, CNN\, Fox News\, and scores of local\, regional\, and international TV and radio outlets. \nBen Freeman is director of the Democratizing Foreign Policy program at the Quincy Institute. Ben is the co-author\, with William Hartung\, of the recently released The Trillion Dollar War Machine: How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home. He investigates money in politics\, defense spending\, and foreign influence in America. He is the author of The Foreign Policy Auction\, which was the first book to systematically analyze the foreign influence industry in the United States. Before joining the Quincy Institute\, Ben founded the Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative at the Center for International Policy\, served as Deputy Director of the National Security program at Third Way\, and was a National Security Fellow at the Project On Government Oversight. At the latter\, he spear-headed creation of the “Foreign Influence Database\,” a repository of propaganda distributed by foreign agents that was previously unavailable online. \nBen earned a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University\, where he taught in the Political Science Department and the Bush School of Government and Public Service. He is currently a faculty member at the Institute for Defense and Business\, where he teaches seminars on the defense budget process and the foreign influence industry. \nHis work has appeared in numerous media outlets\, including the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and Politico. Ben has appeared on CNN\, BBC\, NPR\, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and numerous other media outlets. He has also testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. \nCosponsored by War Industries Resistance Network and Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund \n \n  \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Retired Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatowski of the Eisenhower Media Network will discuss the critical stage that the Ukraine War has reached\, and the urgent need to end it with painful but realistic concessions now before Ukraine loses far more soldiers and territory in the near future\, and before possible US/NATO escalation to help Ukraine avoid total defeat leads to the precipice of nuclear war with Russia. \nLt. SUMMARY:Report from the West Bank
DESCRIPTION:Benny Davidovitch recently returned from the West Bank as part of a Protective Presence for Palestinian shepherds and their families. This presentation is based on his personal experience in the 2 weeks he spent with families in the West Bank (northern Jordan valley). He has put together an excellent presentation on his time there\, including photos and videos taken by himself and other volunteers. It is approximately 25-30 mins\, and consists mainly of photos and short films of events that he and others with the group Jordan Valley Activists (JVA) witnessed during their stays in West Bank communities. \nDavidovitch is an American-Israeli who is a volunteer with JVA\, a group comprised of mostly Jewish Israelis who provide a “protective presence” between Palestinian shepherds and the settlers who target them. They document law violations and other abuses committed by the settlers and fund-raise to help shepherds access water when sources are restricted by the Israeli army. Since the Hamas attack of October 2023\, the settler movement has used Israel’s siege in Gaza as an opportunity to intensify their established campaign of violent harassment of Palestinian shepherds and their families– including arbitrary arrests\, home demolitions\, land grabs\, and murders. \n\nBenjamin Davidovitch\, an American-Israeli resident of Amherst MA since 2007\, works as a Physics Professor at UMass Amherst. In the summer of 2025\, he joined the Jordan Valley Activists – Israeli volunteers who stay 24/7 with Palestinian communities at risk\, and provide them with “protective presence” against their harassment and displacement by violent settler groups. \nRegister to attend:

SUMMARY:Media Bias and the Gaza Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Since October 2023\, historian Assal Rad and journalist Sana Saeed have closely tracked media coverage of the war in Gaza\, highlighting how much of it aligns with the Israeli narrative and distorts key facts — contributing to widespread misinformation and disinformation. \nOur speakers will present examples of headlines that obscure the facts\, and we will have some time to practice our media literacy skills! \n\nDr. Assal Rad is a historian of the modern Middle East. She works on research and writing related to U.S. foreign policy issues\, the Middle East\, contemporary Iran\, and Israel/Palestine. Her writing can be seen in Newsweek\, The National Interest\, The Independent\, Foreign Policy and more\, and she has appeared as a commentator on BBC World\, Al Jazeera\, CNN\, and NPR. Assal completed a PhD in History from the University of California\, Irvine in 2018 and is the author of The State of Resistance: Politics\, Culture\, and Identity in Modern Iran (Cambridge University Press\, 2022). \nSana Saeed is an award-winning journalist and media critic known for her sharp analysis of how media shapes public perception. She previously hosted the shows Backspace and The Occupation Style Guide at AJ+ that illuminated the ways mainstream news frames narratives around war\, colonialism\, and resistance. Since October 2023\, she has been at the forefront of critically exposing how U.S. media propaganda is used to justify war crimes and shape public discourse around the genocide in Gaza. \n  \nRegister to attend:

SUMMARY:Anti-Semitism as a Smokescreen: Effects of Pseudo Anti-semitism on Women
DESCRIPTION:Under the guise of condemning anti-semitism\, the current U.S. presidential administration has weaponized and distorted the true meaning of antisemitic philosophy and actions. Countering anti-semitism has become a bullying tactic on U.S. college campuses and is being used as a means to discredit or demonize supporters of Palestinian rights. \nThis brand of anti-semitism has become a smokescreen for punishing institutions and activists and can be seen as “pseudo anti-semitism”\, a false interpretation and deliberate twisting of the concept used to confuse and further polarize the U.S. electorate.\n \nSpeakers will address how “pseudo anti-semitism” affects women in the U.S. and in Palestine\, contributing to the dangerous rhetoric of the ongoing war taking place there. \nAlice Rothchild\, MD is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who worked in the health care reform and women’s movements for many years. She directed a documentary film Voices Across the Divide\, an oral history project sharing the stories of Palestinians\, which premiered at the Boston Palestine Film Festival\, 2013. \nSince 1997\, she has focused much of her energy on understanding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict from a progressive perspective. Her books on this topic include Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel/Palestine\, Extraordinary Rendition: (American) Writers on Palestine\, On the Brink: Israel and Palestine on the Eve of the 2014 Gaza Invasion\, Shifting Sands: Jewish Women Confront the Israeli Occupation\, and Broken Promises\, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience. \nLubna Alzaroo\, PhD grew up in Hebron\, Palestine before moving to the U.S. for graduate school on a Fulbright Scholarship. Her upbringing in Palestine shaped her interest in Environmental Justice issues. She has master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Washington with a focus on the Environmental Humanities. Her research is on the representation of settler-colonial infrastructure\, and the environment in both U.S and Palestinian Literature. She is a lecturer in the Program on the Environment and the Comparative History of Ideas department at The University of Washington and also teaches Environmental Science at South Seattle College. Her courses focus on environmental justice and Settler Colonial Infrastructures. \nSponsored by the Women’s Health Subteam of Fund Healthcare Not Warfare\, MAPA Education Fund.  Register to attend.

SUMMARY:Is Ukraine Headed for Peace or Nuclear War?
DESCRIPTION:The proxy war being waged in Ukraine carries the ever-present danger of escalating into a nuclear conflict. Russia is winning the war on the battlefield. Ukraine’s army is decimated\, its economy gutted\, and its environment devastated. Hundreds of thousands have been killed or wounded. Either the war will end at the negotiating table\, with some kind of peace agreement\, or the West will decide to escalate along a path of ever greater and more direct confrontation with Russia. What are the decisions – past\, present\, and future – that could lead us to World War III? \nOn the one hand\, the West’s policies – of encouraging the expansion of NATO\, withdrawing from crucial nuclear treaties\, stationing nuclear-capable missiles in Romania and Poland\, assisting Ukraine’s drone attacks on Russia’s early-warning radar systems and nuclear-capable bombers\, allowing the use of NATO countries’ long-range missiles to strike deep within Russia – are headed for  disaster. On the other hand\, Russia has adopted a new doctrine that declares it could carry out nuclear attacks in response to any attack on its territory by a non-nuclear state backed by a nuclear armed power. … Where will it end? \nVeteran defense policy analyst Richard Krushnic will examine multiple scenarios in which this war could end\, either in peace or in Armageddon. \nRichard Kruschnic writes about military corporate influence over U.S. foreign policy\, the Ukraine War and Raytheon Technologies. He continues to be involved in the community development financing in Cambridge\, MA\, and Nicaragua.  In addition to the Ukraine Committee\, he works with MAPA’s Nuclear Disarmament and Latin America and Caribbean working groups\, and Mass Public Banking. \nRegister for this event: \n \nSponsored by Ukraine: A Time for Peace\, a priority campaign of Massachusetts Peace Action.

SUMMARY:Meltdown of Democracy: Bringing Nukes Back Despite Statewide Vote Against Them
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Affordability\, Independence\, and Innovation Act (H.4144) has lots of good things in it. There is at least one big problem with it\, though: the bill’s Section 45 would repeal a citizen-initiated ballot measure – without going back to the voters first. It is in the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities\, and Energy and is being fast-tracked for passage in the fall. \nSection 45 calls for the repeal of a 1982 Act that created democratic control of dangerous nuclear technology. It contains two key things: Before any new nuclear power facilities are built in Massachusetts\, a majority of voters must approve\, AND the vote cannot even be held unless there is an operating\, permanent repository for the radioactive waste that would be generated. There is no permanent repository! The dangerous high-level waste is sitting out in the open at six reactor sites ringing Massachusetts\, including in Plymouth\, Rowe\, and nearby Seabrook and VT Yankee. \nGovernor Healey has chosen to just get rid of the law\, silencing our voices (and the democratic process) She wants to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRS) even though it would be many years before these are practical—and they will be extremely expensive\, still produce toxic nuclear waste\, and include safety and security concerns.  Far better to invest NOW in conservation and sustainable and safer forms of energy! \nPanelists for the webinar are long-time environmental activists who have decades of experience fighting the nuclear industry and the pro-nuclear lobby. They will discuss the history of nuclear power in and around Massachusetts and its toxic impact on our communities\, the Governor’s proposal for bringing in new nuclear\, and will also offer a more democratic and carbon-free\, nuclear-free path forward.  Join us and find out what you can do for a safer environment for all. \nDeborah Katz\, CSW is executive director of Citizens Awareness Network\, a non -profit\, grassroots New England organization fighting for clean air\, democracy\, and environmental justice. She coordinates environmental justice tours including tours to Utah\, Nevada\, Washington\, DC and South Carolina\, three Action Camps\, and  national People’s Summits on Nuclear Waste.  Katz is an author who published Valley of the Shadow\, a picture book on the grief process for the left behind. \nDiane Turco is Executive Director of Cape Downwinders\, a Cape Cod volunteer community grassroots organization with the mission to investigate\, educate\, and agitate for  protection of the people and environment from ongoing threats to communities from Holtec-Pilgrim’s decommissioning plans and nuclear waste dump at the site in Plymouth. After meeting Dr. Helen Caldicott in 1981\, Diane began working then to end nuclear weapons and nuclear power and continues today. She is a retired teacher of children with intensive special needs and a grandmother of three sweet boys. \nChris Nord is the co-founder and Board member of the C-10 Research and Education Foundation – whose mission includes real-time radiological monitoring near the Seabrook atomic reactor\, as well as education the public about safe and sustainable energy a alternatives.  He is Vice-President of the Citizens Awareness Network and founding member and non-violence trainer of the Clamshell Alliance.  He is the creator of the presentation “Nuclear Spent Fuel and Homeland Security: The Case forHardened Storage.” and also co-producer of “Circles Around the Fire”\, a 30-minute slide/video program on nuclear power in New England. \nOrganized by MAPA’s Nuclear Disarmament WG and Indigenous Solidarity WG. Cosponsored by the  Commonwealth Coalition For Democracy and Safe Energy

SUMMARY:What in the World is Happening with Ukraine?
DESCRIPTION:A look at the immediate and big picture developments that combine to bring us to the present situation in Ukraine which clarifies the issues that need to be resolved to end the war. \nAn eye-opening analysis of the underlying causes of the war which\, if not addressed\, stand in the way of a stable diplomatic settlement: NATO expansion\, Kyiv’s repression of Russian speaking Ukrainians\, dismissal of Russia’s core security interests\, European and U.S. exclusion of Russia from the European security architecture. And on the other hand\, Ukraine’s legitimate security concerns and need to protect its territorial integrity. Interestingly\, George Beebe does not see the acquisition of Ukrainian territories as a Russia’s goal in fighting the war. Rather\, he claims\, the focus for Russia all along has been its security concerns as it understands them. \nThe presentation then turns to the issue of how to resolve these underlying causes in a way that leads to a diplomatic resolution of the war. Here the presentation opens us up to stretch our thinking about what compromises might be possible. Given the actual causes of the war\, Russia’s real goals in conducting it\, and Russia’s advances on the battlefield\, Mr. Beebe sees certain elements of a solution as essential while others might be susceptible to compromise. Essential ones would be no NATO membership for Ukraine\, an end to the exclusion of Russia from Europe\, guarantees for Ukraine’s Russian speakers to their culture and religion\, and negotiation of a new security architecture for Europe that includes Russia’s security concerns. This new security architecture based on the principle of common security would then open up the possibility of negotiations for nuclear and conventional arms control (which Putin brought up at the press conference after his Alaska meeting with Trump). \nAreas of possible compromise that benefit Ukraine might be Russian approval of Ukraine joining the European Union\, firm security guarantees from the countries of the U.N. security council (not NATO countries)\, which weapons and military training Ukraine could acquire\, and long term compromises over territories now controlled or annexed by Russia. \nIn the midst of this analysis George Beebe will provide a critique of Trump’s policies and goals. We all have a lot to learn from this webinar which will help us get a better understanding of a Ukrainian crisis which remains the most likely trigger for terminal nuclear war if not resolved. \n\nGeorge Beebe is Director of Grand Strategy at the Quincy Institute. He spent more than two decades in government as an intelligence analyst\, diplomat\, and policy advisor\, including as director of the CIA’s Russia analysis\, director of the CIA’s Open Source Center\, and as a staff advisor on Russia matters to Vice President Cheney. His book\, The Russia Trap: How Our Shadow War with Russia Could Spiral into Nuclear Catastrophe (St. Martin’s Press\, 2019)\, warned how the United States and Russia could stumble into a dangerous military confrontation. Prior to joining QI\, George was Vice President and Director of Studies at the Center for the National Interest and before that he served as president of a technology company that measured the impact of events\, issues\, and advertising campaigns on audience views. He speaks Russian and German. \nRegister for this event: \n \nSponsored by the Ukraine Campaign of Massachusetts Peace Action and the Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament\, and Common Security.

SUMMARY:The US and El Salvador: Parallels on Political Persecution and Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 8th\, 7pm EST\n \nPresidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety\, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is\, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process. \nJoin Lourdes Palacios\, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador\, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families. \nHear from Mneesha Gellman\, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative\, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing families of prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities. \nWe will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action\, beginning September 15th\, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved! \nWe won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes\, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish. DESCRIPTION:An event with award-winning cartoonist Dwayne Booth.\n  \n \nWhat is the future of political cartooning\, protest art\, and visual satire? How can pictures rendered in celebration of the precious vulnerability of the human experience make crystal clear the toxic barbarity of the military and retail industrial complexes\, both built on the hideous notion that the commodification of people everywhere and the willful disenfranchisement of their natural inclination towards peace\, love\, and understanding is better for business – better business being predatory capitalism and capitulation to hierarchy? What can be done to assert the importance and indispensability of the artist’s unique role in a free society as both a witness and predictor and\, in some circumstances\, instigator of all the comedy and tragedy that motivates our politics\, shapes our cultural identities\, and informs\, for better or worse\, the internal voice that shames\, praises\, and confounds our tenuous relationship with truth\, beauty\, and treachery every moment of everyday? \nMr. Fish \nDwayne Booth has been a freelance writer and cartoonist for twenty-five years\, publishing under both his real name and the pen name of Mr. Fish with many of the nation’s most reputable and prestigious magazines\, journals and newspapers.  His work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Village Voice\, the LA Weekly\, the Atlantic\, The Nation\, Vanity Fair\, Mother Jones\, the Advocate\, Slate\, Truthdig\, ScheerPost\, and The Chris Hedges Report.  He has also published with Information for Social Change (British journal)\, Internazionale (Italian magazine)\, and Umanita Nova (Italian newspaper). \nHis awards include the Los Angeles Press Club for editorial cartooning\, the Grambs Aronson Award for Cartooning with a Conscience and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Editorial Cartooning.  He has curated exhibits exploring the history of political cartooning for the University of Southern California\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the University of Connecticut. \n \nRegister for this event \n \nBooth’s most recent book is Nobody Left: Conversations with Famous Radicals\, Progressives and Cultural Icons About the End of Dissent\, Revolution and Liberalism in America\, Fantagraphics Books. \n  \n

How?\nWhy are we making calls today?\nCongress is advancing a budget proposal that would gut Medicaid and SNAP benefits for no other reason than to fund more tax breaks for billionaires. Instead of addressing the real culprits—the ultra-rich and corporations who are driving up costs and prioritizing profits over people—these cuts target working families and communities already struggling to get by. Any cuts to Medicaid and food nutrition benefits put millions of people at risk and will result in people losing access to healthcare and food. \nWho are we talking to?\nWe are calling constituents who are most impacted and most likely to oppose these cuts and may be willing to contact their Senator\, especially those whose Senators have not committed to fully protecting Medicaid and SNAP.\n \nWhat are we talking about?\nWe are making sure constituents understand that their Senator has not committed to fully protecting Medicaid or SNAP benefits. We will offer to patch them through to their representative’s office to deliver a brief but urgent message: Any cuts to Medicaid or food nutrition benefits put millions of people at risk and will result in people losing their healthcare and reliable access to food.  \nUsing the Dialer\nSCALE TO WIN DIALER REFRESHER  \nShort Deck on Scale to Win \nScale to Win: How to Make Calls in Detail \nInteractive Training Course \nStep 1: Click the URL of the phone bank we’re currently dialing into\, linked to at the top of this doc.  \nStep 2: Click “Preview Script” to walk through the structure of the conversation as it will flow through the dialer.  If you’d like additional talking points\, any available documents will be available here\, linked to in the corresponding state in the Table of Contents on page 1. \nStep 3: When you feel ready to dial\, select Call on this Device to make calls using the phone or computer you’re viewing the link on. SUMMARY:GLOBAL ECO-RESTORATION AND POWER DYNAMICS: Critical Ecosystems in Brazil\, Senegal and the US
DESCRIPTION:Climate disruption is increasing and with it so is polarization\, both within the US as well as among nation states. Now more than ever it is incumbent upon us to highlight successful efforts to create a more sustainable\, just\, and peaceful world. \nImportant initiatives in regenerative agriculture\, agroforestry\, soil restoration\, and related practices are making significant contributions to climate adaptation\, often contributing to the resilience of communities and international collaboration. \nThis webinar\, a joint project of the MAPA Peace & Climate group and of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (Bio4Climate)\, will focus on locations outside the US where regenerative practices largely based on local initiatives have been successful on a significant scale. \nOur panelists will address a number of issues including the following: \n\nWhat aspects of these projects worked well and less well?\nHow were local communities engaged\, especially those from marginalized groups?\nWere there any significant collaborations with organizations in the Global North—and if so\, are these collaborations continuing during the second Trump administration?\nAre there any impacts within these regions of US foreign/military policy\, e.g. local US military bases?\n\nSpeakers: \nBeck Mordini (moderator)\, Executive Director of Bio4Climate. She has worked on protecting biodiversity at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and protecting undocumented workers in Washington State. \nJohn Leary\, Founder and Executive Director of Mother Trees\, is an advocate for sustainable agriculture with 20+ years experience in the field. He has dedicated his life to helping communities around the world and designing and implementing landscape restoration programs that rehabilitate farms and restore forest ecosystems. \nOusmane Aly Pame\, PhD\, is distinguished professor of literature at the Université of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar\, Senegal and the founder and President of REDES (Réseau pour l’Emergence et le Dévelopement des Ecovillages au Sahel). A respected regional community leader and former mayor of the eco-town of Guede Chantier\, Dr. Pame has been instrumental in fostering sustainable development in the Sahel region. \nRob de Laet\, is a Dutch entrepreneur\, climate strategist and project lead at Cooling the Climate. Together with Peter Bunyard and others\, Rob is developing the Cooling Climate Chaos project aimed at rapid restoration of the earth’s water cycles and regeneration of the biosphere. Their book Cooling the Climate: How to Revive the Biosphere and Cool the Earth Within 20 Years was published in November 2024. \n \nRegister for this event.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Professor: Will Ukraine's Far-Right Accept or Derail a Negotiated Peace with Russia?
DESCRIPTION:Professor Marta Havryshko\, a Ukrainian History Professor specializing in Holocaust Studies and gender and sexual violence toward women during and after WWII in Ukraine\, now teaches at Clark University in Massachusetts. She will speak about the origins of the Ukraine War prior to the Russian invasion of 2022\, including the influence of ultra-nationalist factions; the current military and political situation in Ukraine; and the prospects for a negotiated settlement of the war. \nRegister to attend. \n\n\nOf special interest may be her views on: \n1. The long history of Ukrainian ultra-nationalists: their founding by Stepan Bandera and support for the Nazis during WWII\, including the murder of an estimated 100\,000 Jews\, Poles\, and others; fighting the Soviets after the war and receiving major support from the U.S. CIA to undermine Soviet control of Ukraine; and their being welcomed as exiles in the U.S.\, Canada\, and elsewhere.  In 2024 in the Ukrainian city of Lviv\, neo-Nazi Ukrainians openly hosted an international conference of far-right proponents of racism and anti-semitism. \n2. The longstanding division in Ukraine between those who want to align with the West and those who want to remain close with Russia for linguistic\, cultural\, religious\, economic\, and political reasons. This division came to a head during the Maidan protests of 2014\, the unconstitutional ouster of the elected government\, and the war in Eastern Ukraine for the last 11 years that led in part to the Russian invasion of 2022. \nRegister to attend.
