How?\nWhy are we making calls today?\nCongress is advancing a budget proposal that would gut Medicaid and SNAP benefits for no other reason than to fund more tax breaks for billionaires. Instead of addressing the real culprits—the ultra-rich and corporations who are driving up costs and prioritizing profits over people—these cuts target working families and communities already struggling to get by. Any cuts to Medicaid and food nutrition benefits put millions of people at risk and will result in people losing access to healthcare and food. \nWho are we talking to?\nWe are calling constituents who are most impacted and most likely to oppose these cuts and may be willing to contact their Senator\, especially those whose Senators have not committed to fully protecting Medicaid and SNAP.\n \nWhat are we talking about?\nWe are making sure constituents understand that their Senator has not committed to fully protecting Medicaid or SNAP benefits. SUMMARY:No War with Iran - Emergency Rally
DESCRIPTION:Israel has struck Iran in an unprovoked attack on its civilian infrastructure in an attempt to drag the US into their senseless and dangerous wars in the Middle East. \nThe Israeli government has claimed this is a “preemptive” action\, but Iran was not attacking\, nor was it building a nuclear weapon. This strike was UNPROVOKEDand ILLEGAL under international law. It has needlessly put many innocent people in mortal danger. \nOn June 13th\, we will rally at the JFK Federal Building to demand an end to US and Israeli aggression for a return to diplomacy over military confrontation.   \nSponsors: National Iranian American Council\, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston\, Boston Coalition for Palestine\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, and more \n

SUMMARY:"The Encampments" Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets to attend. \n \nMAPA invites you to a screening of The Encampments\, a new film by Michael T. Workman\, followed by discussion. The first months of the second Trump administration have signaled a shift from derision and misrepresentation of the movement for justice in Palestine to active state suppression. The very Universities that at best barely tolerated and at worst violently dismantled student protest movements are now themselves being threatened with loss of grants\, funding\, tax-exempt status\, and other privileges\, for not being brutal enough in their response to peace activists. In addition to pursuing all possible legal avenues to dissuade vocal opposition to America’s active involvement in an ongoing genocide\, the administration is creating an atmosphere of fear by abducting individuals active in the movement off the streets of so-called “sanctuary cities” in broad daylight and renditioning them to other states in an effort to expel them from the country. These actions must not break our will\, but strengthen our resolve. It is in this spirit that we present this timely and vital film. \nAbout the Film: When a group of students at Columbia University in New York launch a movement protesting the war in Gaza\, they spark a nationwide uprising in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Encampments spring up at hundreds of campuses as students object to their own university’s investment in the US and Israeli arms industry. Featuring detained student activist Mahmoud Khalil\, The Encampments takes viewers inside America’s student uprising with incredible intimacy and urgency. Professors\, whistleblowers\, and student activists shed light on a moment that captivated the nation’s attention and continues to make headlines today. \nDiscussion after screening with student/s who participated in encampments. \nFeel free to bring snacks to share. \nDirections to the venue. \nPurchase tickets to attend. \n \nSponsored by MAPA\, cosponsored by the MA Justice for All Party\, Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine\, CD8 for Palestine\, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston\, Northshore for Palestine\, Palestine House of New England\, and Party for Socialism and Liberation.

SUMMARY:"Deadly Betrayal: The Truth about why the US Invaded Iraq" with Dennis Fritz and Lawrence Wilkerson
DESCRIPTION:Former Air Force command chief master sergeant Dennis Fritz and Colonel (ret.) Lawrence Wilkerson will be speaking at the Community Church of Boston at 6:00pm on Friday\, April 11 about chief Fritz’ book Deadly Betrayal: The Truth About Why The US Invaded Iraq. This book provides important context for current events happening in West Asia/Middle East. \nFollowing their talk and Q&A discussion (from 6:00pm – 7:30pm)\, copies of Deadly Betrayal will be available for purchase and signing from 7:30pm – 8:00pm. \n\nNOTE: Since we are purchasing copies of the book in advance\, if you would like to purchase a copy\, please let me know\, so we know how many copies to order.\n\n \nThe event is both in-person (565 Boylston St. Boston\, MA 02116\, 2nd floor) or on Zoom. Register and select the option you like! The event is sponsored by Community Church of Boston and Massachusetts Peace Action. Thank you and we hope to see you there. \nParking is available at the Back Bay Garage\, with entrances at 85 St. James Ave. and 199 Clarendon St. Community Church of Boston can validate so parking is only $8! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the book:\n\n\nBased on dramatic first-hand evidence\, Deadly Betrayal uncovers why and how a cabal of Pentagon Advisors in the George W. Bush Administration created a fabricated justification to attack Iraq. \nThe book provides a detailed insider account of how a Pentagon cabal strategized to manipulate intelligence\, pressure the United Nations\, force a Congressional authorization for the use of force through political threats\, and scare the American people after 9/11 into supporting an attack on Iraq. \nAuthored by a Pentagon insider and senior enlisted leader of nearly three decades standing\, Command Chief Master Sergeant\, Retired\, Dennis Fritz worked directly for and advised some of the most senior General Officers in the Department of Defense. They included General Richard B. Myers\, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the height of the Iraq War. After military retirement\, Fritz found himself inside Donald Rumsfeld’s Pentagon working for Douglas Feith\, the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and key architect of the case for war. He was detailed to the Pentagon as a contracted Research Fellow and Analyst on a special project to gather and review all Iraqi Pre-War Planning Documents for declassification. His access to thousands of personal handwritten notes\, documents\, and Pentagon’s internal conversations\, has allowed him to tell the real story of why America invaded Iraq. \n“This book is an actual act of service. It will help many people\, including veterans\, connect the dots to explain this century’s American wars and give them further permission to ask tough and uncomfortable questions.”\n—Matthew Hoh\, former Marine Corps officer and Iraq War veteran who resigned his State Department position in Afghanistan over that war’s 2009 escalation. \n“I have known Dennis Fritz for three decades and served with him for many of those years. As my senior enlisted advisor in several commands\, I benefited from his sound counsel. While I do not agree with some of his conclusions in this book . . . I respect Dennis and was always proud to serve alongside him.”\n—General Richard Myers\, Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff \n“Sooner rather than later\, in my view\, historians will write the complete and accurate history of these disastrous wars from start to finish\, and sordid will it be. Alas\, however\, as with most history that is as accurate as humans can make it\, those guilty of the crimes and ravages it inevitably encompasses\, will have escaped all but a divine providence’s justice. This book at least will perhaps disturb their present comfort. It does mine.”\n—From the Foreword by Larry Wilkerson\, former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell

SUMMARY:Divesting from Israel's Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nJoin us on April 1 to learn about: \n1. The specific weapons that Israel is employing to maintain its apartheid system and for its assault on Gaza\, the West Bank\, Lebanon and Syria. \n2. The military contractors who produce and provide these weapons to Israel – especially those here in Massachusetts. \n3. How divestment campaigns work and how they can function to push for an end to U.S. war aid to Israel. \n4. The Bill in the Massachusetts Legislature (H.D.3630) to divest the Mass. State Pension Plan from companies selling weapons to Israel and Mass. Peace Action’s divestment campaign focused on pressuring the Mass. State Pension Fund and Massachusetts Universities to divest their holding in companies that provide these weapons to Israel. \nNoam Perry is AFSC’s Economic Activism associate and one of the creators of Investigate\, AFSC’s project that aims to expose corporate involvement in oppressive state violence structures and to promote standards for corporate social responsibility and respect for human rights. Its research efforts focus on corporations involved in incarceration and immigrant detention\, the Israeli occupation\, and the border industries. These are AFSC program focus areas\, where there is an identified lack of available resources\, coupled with explicit requests for such resources from the movements we work with. The Investigate project reaches out to the responsible investment community\, to community activists\, and to interfaith partners with information and tools for corporate engagement\, corporate accountability\, and divestment initiatives\, to support the building of wide movements that can influence\, limit\, and monitor corporate abuse. \nRegister to attend.

SUMMARY:Let This Radicalize You: MAPA Winter Common Read
DESCRIPTION:The Common Read is a great fit for MAPA members and our interns\, past and present. It is especially valuable to young organizers and instructive for all of us.  \nAuthors Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba each have decades of organizing experience and they maintain that ORGANIZING IS THE ANTIDOTE TO DESPAIR. Historian Robin D. G. Kelley says about the book- “Hayes and Kaba have turned decades of collective wisdom and experience into the text we desperately need right now.”  \nEach of the book’s ten chapters shares examples of the nuts and bolts of grassroots organizing\, where “finding common ground with a broad spectrum of people” is the goal. Chapter eight is titled “Hope and Grief can Co-exist”.  The authors’ discussion of the importance of listening skills and patience (along with Paulo Freire’s approach to political education) will resonate with many of us who have been in meetings where we find ourselves working hard to maintain relationships while navigating differences. Here are Hayes and Kaba on BUILDING A MOVEMENT THE SIZE OF THE ONE WE NEED: “it’s not as simple as handing newcomers a new set of politics and telling them\, “Yours are bad\, use these instead.” \nThe first of five 90 minute sessions will be held on Thursday\, January 23\, 7 to 8:30 PM\, covering the book through chapter two Remaining meetings will continue on Thursday evenings- February 6 and 20 and March 6 and 20\, and all will be on Zoom. Completing the book on the first day of Spring\, we’ll move forward with new knowledge and tools to resist the abandonment of our communities by corporations and government and to oppose the U.S. war machine at every turn. \nYou can get the book in paperback\, ebook or hardcover for 40% off from Haymarket Books – copy this link in your browser to see the options: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1922-let-this-radicalize-you . FYI\, there’s a workbook which we have saved as a PDF to be printed or viewed digitally\, and other resources to access.  \nSponsored by Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund.  Register to attend.

SUMMARY:From Crisis to Action: Building Ecosystems of Defense and Change
DESCRIPTION:As the political landscape is rapidly changing – with pieces of the Federal government being dismantled\, mass deportations\, and widespread uncertainty about our futures – we feel driven to respond but stuck. Our ability to take action (protest\, lobby\, spread awareness\, etc.) is driven by our theories of power and change\, as well as our belief that we can be effective. If our theories of change don’t seem applicable\, we feel helpless and confused. \nThis workshop will create space for us to discuss how we should view power\, theories of change\, and apply them to the new chaotic moment. Should we stick to what we were doing? Should we totally change our game plan? How can we be more effective? \nThe space will be accessible for both those who are experienced activists\, organizers\, or scholars\, as well as those who are new to thinking about political change and what to do. \nCosponsored by MAPA
