SUMMARY:Slavery's Enduring Legacy: America's Unpaid Reparations Debt
DESCRIPTION:The legacy of slavery\, and the stolen labor of millions of Africans forcibly brought to the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries\, continues to shape the political\, social\, and personal lives of all Americans today\, especially Indigenous and African-descended communities. This webinar examines the enduring consequences of slavery with a focus on reparations: the unpaid debt that still looms over our society. We will take an alternative approach to the subject of reparations: We will trace its roots in the expansion of the American empire and the ideology of white supremacy. We will explore slavery’s continuation embedded in the 13th Amendment\, including the ongoing legality of forced labor for incarcerated people and the industry that profits from incarceration\, punishment\, and surveillance. And we will address the city of Boston\, whose wealth was built on the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Together\, we will consider the obstacles to repair and explore how to forge a new path forward. \nSpeakers: \nStephanie Guirand holds a PhD in Sociology from Goldsmiths\, University of London\, where she is currently a Graduate Fellow. She serves as the Program Function Manager and Researcher for The Black Response (TBR)\, an abolitionist research and advocacy organisation under Community Service Cares\, Inc.\, based in Cambridge\, MA. \nKevin Peterson is the founder and executive director of The New Democracy Coalition\, a non-partisan and non-profit organization that focuses on civic literacy\, civic policy and electoral justice. Mr. Peterson studied philosophy and politics at Boston University and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for Collaborative Leadership at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. \nTony Van Der Meer\, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the Africana Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston and serves on the MAPA Board. Professor Van Der Meer was selected for the 2024 Scholar Activist Award from Critical Educators for Social Justice (CESI)\, a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). \nRosemary Kean serves on MAPA’s Board and also is co-convener of MAPA’s Racial Justice and Indigenous Solidarity Working Group. She is co-chair of the Social Justice Community at First Church Boston UU. \nWe hope to see you there\, click below to register

SUMMARY:Turning On Us: The War Machine Comes Home (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, November 12 from 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM ET for a War Industry Resisters Network webinar. \nThe violence that the US military has inflicted on the rest of the world has always been accompanied by police violence and repression at home\, especially aimed at BIPOC people. But now\, with persistent ICE attacks and National Guard occupations of our cities\, it has become an overt and official wide-scale federal policy. The weapons and strategies that the US has used in its imperial wars are now being turned on its own population in a blatant and unconstitutional move towards authoritarian rule. The wars have come home. This webinar will address this undemocratic use of militarized force\, discuss its legality\, and point to who is profiting from it. It will also describe the resistance that has risen up in cities such as Portland\, Chicago\, and DC. \nRegister Below

SUMMARY:Eyes of the Rainbow: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, Nov. 3\, 5:45 pm\, at the Easthampton Library Annex\, 52 Main Street for the 2nd installment in our monthly film & discussion series\, Cuba in the Valley. This month’s film is Eyes of the Rainbow\, a documentary by noted Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando about the life of Assata Shakur\, the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader\, who escaped prison\, proclaiming her innocence\, and then spent the rest of her life in Cuba. She died in September 2025. The film takes place in 1997\, when she had been in exile in Cuba for 15 years. Director Rolando says:  “In the struggle of the African American people\, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice\, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles.” This is the voice\, she says\, of Assata Shakur.  Who was Assata?  How did she come to be in Cuba?  Why did she choose Cuba?  And why did the United States place her as a focal point in their demands for normalizing relations with Cuba and punish Cuba for not surrendering her? How is it that Assata became such a legend\, in the US and in Cuba? In Eyes of the Rainbow\, the film interweaves Assata’s story with her spiritual connection to the Yoruba Orisha Oya\, an Afro-Cuban goddess\, underlining the importance of culture and religion as well as politics in the African Diaspora and liberation struggle. The film is primarily in English\, subtitled when in Spanish\, and still incredibly relevant to the U.S. and Cuba of today.  \nAgustin Lao-Montes\, professor in the W.E.B. DuBois African American Studies Department at UMass Amherst and noted activist and scholar in the Afrodescendent movements of the U.S.\, Cuba and the Caribbean will lead a post film discussion bringing these connections together.

SUMMARY:Meltdown of Democracy: Bringing Nukes Back Despite Statewide Vote Against Them
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Affordability\, Independence\, and Innovation Act (H.4144) has lots of good things in it. There is at least one big problem with it\, though: the bill’s Section 45 would repeal a citizen-initiated ballot measure – without going back to the voters first. It is in the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities\, and Energy and is being fast-tracked for passage in the fall. \nSection 45 calls for the repeal of a 1982 Act that created democratic control of dangerous nuclear technology. It contains two key things: Before any new nuclear power facilities are built in Massachusetts\, a majority of voters must approve\, AND the vote cannot even be held unless there is an operating\, permanent repository for the radioactive waste that would be generated. There is no permanent repository! The dangerous high-level waste is sitting out in the open at six reactor sites ringing Massachusetts\, including in Plymouth\, Rowe\, and nearby Seabrook and VT Yankee. \nGovernor Healey has chosen to just get rid of the law\, silencing our voices (and the democratic process) She wants to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRS) even though it would be many years before these are practical—and they will be extremely expensive\, still produce toxic nuclear waste\, and include safety and security concerns.  Far better to invest NOW in conservation and sustainable and safer forms of energy! \nPanelists for the webinar are long-time environmental activists who have decades of experience fighting the nuclear industry and the pro-nuclear lobby. They will discuss the history of nuclear power in and around Massachusetts and its toxic impact on our communities\, the Governor’s proposal for bringing in new nuclear\, and will also offer a more democratic and carbon-free\, nuclear-free path forward.  Join us and find out what you can do for a safer environment for all. \nDeborah Katz\, CSW is executive director of Citizens Awareness Network\, a non -profit\, grassroots New England organization fighting for clean air\, democracy\, and environmental justice. She coordinates environmental justice tours including tours to Utah\, Nevada\, Washington\, DC and South Carolina\, three Action Camps\, and  national People’s Summits on Nuclear Waste.  Katz is an author who published Valley of the Shadow\, a picture book on the grief process for the left behind. \nDiane Turco is Executive Director of Cape Downwinders\, a Cape Cod volunteer community grassroots organization with the mission to investigate\, educate\, and agitate for  protection of the people and environment from ongoing threats to communities from Holtec-Pilgrim’s decommissioning plans and nuclear waste dump at the site in Plymouth. After meeting Dr. Helen Caldicott in 1981\, Diane began working then to end nuclear weapons and nuclear power and continues today. She is a retired teacher of children with intensive special needs and a grandmother of three sweet boys. \nChris Nord is the co-founder and Board member of the C-10 Research and Education Foundation – whose mission includes real-time radiological monitoring near the Seabrook atomic reactor\, as well as education the public about safe and sustainable energy a alternatives.  He is Vice-President of the Citizens Awareness Network and founding member and non-violence trainer of the Clamshell Alliance.  He is the creator of the presentation “Nuclear Spent Fuel and Homeland Security: The Case forHardened Storage.” and also co-producer of “Circles Around the Fire”\, a 30-minute slide/video program on nuclear power in New England. \nOrganized by MAPA’s Nuclear Disarmament WG and Indigenous Solidarity WG. Cosponsored by the  Commonwealth Coalition For Democracy and Safe Energy

SUMMARY:Rally to Divest MA from Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 19\, in front of the Massachusetts State House to raise our voices against Israel’s decision to erase the very idea of a Palestine and to “put another nail in the coffin” of this hope. It’s time for Massachusetts to end its investments in the merchants of death who are profiting from this mass murder and starvation being carried on in front of the world. \nTime to get the word out that our divestment bill is about to be voted on by the\nLegislature \n\nWe will thank the legislators on the Public Service Committee for meeting with us over\nthe past 3 months and for engaging with us in serious conversation about the horror in\nGaza and why our bill could play a role in the effort to prevent the annihilation of\nPalestinians.\nWe will point out that our bill provides the Legislature to with an opportunity to make a\ncourageous statement on the moral issue of our time.\nA positive vote means that our bill moves on to the next stage in the legislative process.\nWithout a positive vote our bill dies.\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Wrong Way to Combat Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:MAPA will present a teach-in on the right and wrong ways to address antisemitism.  The workshop will include viewing a 40-minute film\,  “Exploring an Antiracist\, Solidarity Approach to Antisemitism”\, which is based on a conversation among seven well-informed people held in June of this year.  View the film trailer. \nThe meeting will include small-group discussions. This teach-in will encourage participants to think critically about the issues raised by the work of the MA Special Commission on Combating Antisemitism and its role in shaping state policy\, and motivate participants to get involved in expressing their views to their legislators about the work of the Commission and introduce mechanisms and tools for doing so. \nThe film and teach-in materials were developed by Together for an Inclusive Massachusetts (TIM)\, a diverse alliance of Jewish\, Muslim\, Arab\, labor\, education\, civil rights and other organizations\, including MAPA\, advocating for justice and equity in Massachusetts. \nThe event is in-person only. Attendance is open and free to MAPA members and supporters\, but to allow us to organize the discussions\, you must sign up to attend. Do not show up for the event without signing up. SUMMARY:Defend the Guard
DESCRIPTION:S.2471/H.3829 upholds the framework of the U.S. Constitution by ensuring that the Massachusetts National Guard is only called upon for active federal military service when there has been an official declaration of war by Congress\, as required by Article I\, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. Its purpose is to require a shift in American foreign policy and curtail the federal government’s ability to wage endless war without congressional oversight or accountability. Defend the Guard would have no effect on either deployments to other states in the union or overseas training missions.  \nThe hearing for this bill will take place on Tuesday\, September 16th in front of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs. The hearing will be at the Massachusetts State House in room A-1 from 1-5pm. Please join us in testifying in favor of this bill to uphold the U.S. Constitution. \nRegister below by 12pm on Monday September\, 15. You may testify in person or virtually.

SUMMARY:The US and El Salvador: Parallels on Political Persecution and Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 8th\, 7pm EST\n \nPresidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety\, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is\, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process. \nJoin Lourdes Palacios\, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador\, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families. \nHear from Mneesha Gellman\, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative\, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing families of prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities. \nWe will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action\, beginning September 15th\, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved! \nWe won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes\, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish. SUMMARY:Fallout Flicks Presents: White Light Black Rain
DESCRIPTION:Join us in viewing White Light Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, directed by Steven Okazaki! We will follow the viewing with a discussion\, to share our reactions and ways to address the threat that nuclear weapons pose. \n \nAs the US and other countries build up their nuclear arsenals amidst global areas of conflict\, the unthinkable threat of nuclear war has become very real—and very frightening.  Through the powerful recollections of the survivors of the atomic bombs\, which leveled two Japanese cities in 1945\, the film ‘White Light Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki’ presents a deeply moving look at the painful legacy of using nuclear weapons in war.

SUMMARY:Letter Delivery to Katherine Clark
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, Congresswoman Katherine Clark tweeted that “I am horrified by the starvation in Gaza\,” yet she supports sending Israel the weapons it uses to deliberately starve Gaza. \nWe need to point out this contradiction and demand that Clark takes action to end our country’s complicity in Israel’s genocide. \nRight now there is bill in Congress that would do exactly that\, the Block the Bombs Act (H.3565). This bill would prevent the federal government from sending Israel some of the most destruction weapons being used in its genocide. \nSign this letter to tell Clark that tweets are not enough\, she must take immediate action to end our complicity in the genocide in Gaza. We are demanding Clark meet with her constituents to discuss legislation to stop the genocide and hold Israel accountable. \nWe will be delivering this letter to Clark’s office Thursday\, August 7th at noon\, carrying pots and pans to symbolize the starvation unfolding in Gaza. Meet at the Malden Center T-stop. \n  \nSponsored by the Arise & Resist Coalition\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, National Iranian American Council – MA Chapter\, Doctors Against Genocide\, About Face Veterans\, Veterans for Peace\, If Not Now Boston\, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston\, Boston Democratic Socialists of America\, Boston Interfaith Ceasefire\, Green-Rainbow Party Boston\, Arlington for Palestine\, Lexington for Palestine\, and Medford for Palestine

SUMMARY:Hiroshima & Nagasaki Evening Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of conversation about the longstanding impacts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, and the current state of nuclear weapons. \nOn August 6\, 1945\, the USA dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. A few days later\, on August 9th\, the USA dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. These bombs were glorified to be the conclusion of WWII\, and are inhumanely remembered by many Americans as making us saviors. In reality\, Japan was going to surrender from WWII with or without these bombs being used\, and because they were used\, more than 200\,000 people were instantly killed\, with tens of thousands more dying due to related causes in the following years. \nIn this conversation\, we will approach the political\, societal\, and personal aspects of the atomic bomb use in 1945\, the lasting impacts that this decision caused\, and the present day threats of nuclear weapons. This conversation will center on images and stories compiled by Nihon Hidankyo – followed by a full-group discussion on these topics. We hope this dialogue will bring people together to build trust\, educate about the threat of nuclear weapons and war\, and bring confidence in taking action to ensure a secure\, peaceful\, and prospering future for all.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario
DESCRIPTION:Timmon Wallis will discuss his new book Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario. While Annie Jacobsen based her 2024 bestseller\, Nuclear War: A Scenario on numerous interviews with generals\, Pentagon war planners and other nuclear weapons experts\, Wallis bases his scenario on interviews with peace activists and campaigners from across the country and around the world. And while Jacobsen describes\, second by second\, how a single nuclear weapon could end up destroying civilization over a period of 72 minutes\, Wallis lays out a pathway\, already in progress\, that could move the Doomsday Clock second by second further away from midnight\, leading ultimately to the total elimination of nuclear weapons before it’s too late. \nTimmon Wallis is Executive Director of NuclearBan.US\, based in Northampton\, MA. He was born in Cambridge\, MA\, and returned to his home state in 2017\, after spending most of his life in the UK (plus several years in Belgium\, Sri Lanka\, South Sudan and a number of other countries). Wallis holds a PhD in Peace Studies and has been a nuclear disarmament activist for much of his life. His 2016 book\, Disarming the Nuclear Argument\, contributed to the negotiations for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons\, for which the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. \n \nRegister to attend \nRead the review of Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario by MAPA member Jeanne Trubek in the July 2\, 2025 edition of The Peace Advocate.

SUMMARY:Stop Starving Gaza! Rally and Silent Procession
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Wegman’s main door\, near the big clock\nOrganized by the Public Action Committee of the MAPA Gaza Committee\nIsrael is starving 2.1 million people in Gaza. The small volume of aid that started to trickle in after an 11-week full blockade is a drop in the ocean. Israel is blocking thousands of trucks carrying food\, medicine\, and clean water from entering Gaza and continues to bomb bakeries\, farmland\, water facilities\, aid distribution centers\, and aid guards. Children and the elderly are dying. Israel’s goal is to prevent Palestinians from being able to return to their land. This is all being facilitated by our tax dollars.

SUMMARY:No War With Iran
DESCRIPTION:On June 20\, President Trump ordered an illegal and unconstitutional attack on Iran\, for which there is no justification. Join us at the JFK Federal Building (Cambridge Street entrance) this Thursday\, June 26 at 12pm to demand a return to diplomacy\, no further military strikes; a full congressional investigation and public accounting; a complete rejection of this war; and a ceasefire in Gaza. \nOn June 23rd\, 10 days after the start of the unprovoked and illegal US-backed Israeli aggression against Iran\, President Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. While we hope that this fragile ceasefire holds\, our recent experience with Israel’s numerous ceasefire violations in Gaza and Lebanon makes us fear that it may not. We continue to push to prevent the U.S. from getting involved in an all-out regional war. Congress must act now and pass the Iran War Powers resolutions filed by Sen. Kaine and Reps. Massie and Khanna to prevent further US military action and to demand accountability for President Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional strikes on Iran\, and cut off U.S. arms shipments to Israel. \nJoin National Iranian American Council\, Arise & Resist Coalition\, Boston Coalition for Palestine\, MAPA\, JVP\, INN\, and many more groups at noon on Thursday at the JFK Federal building (the Cambridge St entrance) to hear from experts like Stephen Kinzer and Joseph Gerson\, faith leaders\, lawmakers\, members of the Iranian-American and Palestinian-American communities\, and other anti war voieces reject Trump’s illegal intervention in this war. \nThis is the third in a series of Boston area rallies to stop war with Iran.  We rallied on June 13 to protest Israel’s attack on Iran the previous night\, and on June 22 to protest the US attack on Iran the previous night.  Sign up to let us know you’ll be there and to be notified of upcoming actions. \nSponsored by: the Massachusetts and Connecticut chapters of the  National Iranian American Council\, the Arise and Resist Coalition\, Boston Coalition for Palestine\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston\, Northshore for Palestine\, the Palestinian House of New England\, Boston Democratic Socialists of America\, JP Progressives\, Our Revolution Massachusetts\, Brookline Peace Coalition\, CD8 for Palestine\, Community Encampments for Palestine\, Veterans for Peace Boston\, the Green-Rainbow Party of Boston\, the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine\, the Green-Rainbow Party of Massachusetts\, IfNotNow Boston\, Arlington for Palestine.
