SUMMARY:Stop Regime Change War on Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 3rd @ 3pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nNorthampton Town Hall\nHolyoke Veterans Memorial Park\nPresident Trump’s illegal acts of war against Venezuela are a violation of US\, military\, and international law. The United States has been engaged in a carefully orchestrated series of ever-increasing provocations against Venezuela culminating in the bombing of Caracas and the abduction of the Venezuelan president and his wife. \nThe US government started with attacks on small fishing boats and murdered the survivors of the attacks. It went farther\, seizing an oil tanker and bringing it to a US port\, planning to steal the oil.  The Trump administration has now unilaterally launched a regime change war against Venezuela \nWe Demand: \n\nNo to Regime Change\nNo to Decapitation\nNo to Military Attack\nBring our Forces Home\nGet the CIA out of Venezuela\n\nJoin us Saturday\, January 3rd\, at 3:00 PM at Park Street Station\, Northampton Town Hall\, and Holyoke’s Veterans Memorial Park to rally against war. \nThis is urgent. Our country is moving towards authoritarianism so quickly that we must oppose it with like speed.

SUMMARY:Stop Trump’s Blockade of Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 20th @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nJoin us Saturday\, December 20\, at 1:00 PM at Park Street Station to rally\nagainst war.\nOn Tuesday President Trump proclaimed “I am ordering a Total and Complete Blockade of all sanctioned Oil Tankers going into and out of Venezuela…Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada every assembled in the history of South America. It will only get bigger\, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before.” \nThe Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court clearly defines “the blockade of the ports or coasts of a State by the armed forces of another State” as an act of aggression. This proclamation is an act of war. In response Venezuela’s government ordered its navy to escort tankers from port\, escalating the risk of confrontation (Boston Globe Dec. 18). \nThis blockade is only the latest U.S. provocation that includes murdering 95 civilians in boats off South America’s coast (Deliberately killing 2 survivors of these attacks while in the water); declaring a No Fly Zone over all Venezuelan airspace; and last week seizing an oil tanker carrying Venezuelan oil on the high seas. President Trump has told us that these attacks are only the beginning. \nThese provocations are backed up by a vast war armada\, equipped with the most modern missiles and bombers\, sitting off Venezuela’s coast\, In addition 15\,000 U.S. soldiers on those ships and in Puerto Rico are ready to invade at a moment’s notice. \nWith the situation getting more dangerous by the day\, the goal of the rally is to call on everyone to do what they can to prevent war. \nJoin us to Demand: \n\nAn immediate end to the Blockade of Venezuela’s ports\nEnding Trump’s piracy of oil tankers on the high seas.\nStopping all executions of civilians in small boats off the coast of South America\n\nAnd most important\, withdraw all the U.S. warships and weapons from the coast of Venezuela and bring our sailors\, airmen and marines home for the holidays where they belong.

SUMMARY:Block the Bombs Action Hour
DESCRIPTION:Since a ceasefire was announced on Oct 9\, Israel has committed over 700 violations and killed 386 Palestinians\, including\, on average\, two children per day. Congress must pass the Block the Bombs Act to bring about a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and across the region. \nThe Block the Bombs Act (H.R. 3565)\, which currently has 57 co-sponsors\, was introduced by Representatives Ramirez\, Jacobs\, Jayapal\, and Pocan. If adopted\, the bill would prohibit the President from selling\, transferring\, or exporting certain defense articles or services to Israel\, except in specified circumstances. These weapons have been used to inflict mass civilian casualties and destroy civilian infrastructure\, including 2000-lb bombs. When dropped\, they can lead to a half-mile radius of both building damage and severe injuries to humans\, including ruptured lungs\, burst sinuses\, and torn off limbs. \nU.S. weapons are responsible for tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths. Americans are tired of seeing it – 75% of Democratic voters\, and 60% of all voters\, oppose the US giving more weapons to Israel. They are also tired of paying for it with their taxes – $21.7B since October 7th. It is time for Congress to use its leverage as the controller of military aid to force Israel to abide by the ceasefire. \nJoin us for an action hour to call on our members of Congress to sign on. We will gather on Zoom\, go through a brief intro\, and make phone calls to Congress\, demanding they support this bill. We will walk through a call script for those who would like some help on what to say on the calls. \nRegister Below!

SUMMARY:Safe Communities Act Hearing
DESCRIPTION:ICE is creating an environment of fear in our neighborhoods. Our neighbors are afraid to go to work\, to the hospital\, to send their children to school\, to worship in peace\, or contact their government. \nIt’s time for all of us to speak up. We can change Massachusetts law to protect our neighbors and end collaboration with ICE. \nThe public has the right to testify (in person\, virtually\, or in writing) on Tuesday Nov. 25th at 11am. But you have to sign up by 5pm today (Thursday Nov. 20th). \n3 Minutes to tell the Public Safety Committee why we shouldn’t be collaborating with ICE. Here’s a fact sheet to help you! \nWhen we win the Safe Communities Act will: \n\nPrevent state and local law enforcement from doing the work of ICE agents\nExtend legal protections like Miranda rights to all our neighbors\nLet immigrants interact with police and government officals without fear of being turned in to ICE\nEnsure your State and Local taxes aren’t also fueling ICE\nWe need you to voice your opposition to ICE’s dangerous and illegal actions.\n\nClick here to register to testify! \nIf you can’t join us in person or virtually\, send a message to your State Reps and Governor Healey. \nClick here to urge your representatives to support the Safe Communities Act! \nYou can also call: \nThe State House at (617) 727-1100\nGovernor Healey at (617) 725-4005\nThe Safe Communities Act already has over 70 cosponsors. That’s over 1/3 of the legislature! \nConnecticut\, California\, Illinois\, Washington\, and other states already have this law on the books! There’s no good reason for Massachusetts to lag behind. \nWe all have a responsibility to stick up for our neighbors. Time to draw the line.

SUMMARY:Keep Trump’s Hands off Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 22nd @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nThe Trump Administration has assembled an armada of U.S. warships and thousands troops off the coast of Venezuela. They’ve sent thousands more soldiers to Puerto Rico in case they are needed for an invasion. CIA operatives who have snuck into Venezuela are scouting out the situation inside the country. And\, while enjoying blowing up dozens of civilians the president claims are drug dealers\, Trump has made it clear that President Maduro of Venezuela will be removed from power one way or another. \nDoes President Trump intend to kidnap President Maduro? Does he plan to assassinate him? Does he plan to invade the country and install a new leader in power while we steal the nation’s vast oil reserves? We don’t know. \nWe do know that we must act now to prevent a brewing disaster for Venezuela. \nWe have followed fools into Vietnam\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, Cambodia\, Libya and into dozens of Regime Change operations from Iran to the Congo\, to Chile\, to Libya and Ukraine. How have those turned out? \nSpeakers will include: \n\nJeff Parente from About Face\nStephen Kinzer\, Author and Journalist\nEd Childs\, Unite Here Local 25\nPerformance by Singer-Songwriter Ben Grosscup\, Peoples Music Network\n\nLet’s not be fooled again. SUMMARY:Keep Trump’s Hands off Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 14 @ Noon\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nThe Trump Administration has assembled an armada of U.S. warships and thousands troops off the coast of Venezuela. \nLet’s not be fooled again. Join us to Say: \n\nNo to Regime Change\nNo to Decapitation\nNo to Military Attack\nBring our Forces Home\nGet the CIA out of Venezuela\n\nJoin us at noon on Friday November 14th at Park Street Station in Boston for a rally. We will then head to the JFK Federal Building to deliver a letter to Senate offices\, demand Congress reject Trump’s illegal actions.

SUMMARY:Slavery's Enduring Legacy: America's Unpaid Reparations Debt
DESCRIPTION:The legacy of slavery\, and the stolen labor of millions of Africans forcibly brought to the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries\, continues to shape the political\, social\, and personal lives of all Americans today\, especially Indigenous and African-descended communities. This webinar examines the enduring consequences of slavery with a focus on reparations: the unpaid debt that still looms over our society. We will take an alternative approach to the subject of reparations: We will trace its roots in the expansion of the American empire and the ideology of white supremacy. We will explore slavery’s continuation embedded in the 13th Amendment\, including the ongoing legality of forced labor for incarcerated people and the industry that profits from incarceration\, punishment\, and surveillance. And we will address the city of Boston\, whose wealth was built on the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Together\, we will consider the obstacles to repair and explore how to forge a new path forward. \nSpeakers: \nStephanie Guirand holds a PhD in Sociology from Goldsmiths\, University of London\, where she is currently a Graduate Fellow. She serves as the Program Function Manager and Researcher for The Black Response (TBR)\, an abolitionist research and advocacy organisation under Community Service Cares\, Inc.\, based in Cambridge\, MA. \nKevin Peterson is the founder and executive director of The New Democracy Coalition\, a non-partisan and non-profit organization that focuses on civic literacy\, civic policy and electoral justice. Mr. Peterson studied philosophy and politics at Boston University and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for Collaborative Leadership at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. \nTony Van Der Meer\, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the Africana Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston and serves on the MAPA Board. Professor Van Der Meer was selected for the 2024 Scholar Activist Award from Critical Educators for Social Justice (CESI)\, a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). \nRosemary Kean serves on MAPA’s Board and also is co-convener of MAPA’s Racial Justice and Indigenous Solidarity Working Group. SUMMARY:Turning On Us: The War Machine Comes Home (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, November 12 from 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM ET for a War Industry Resisters Network webinar. \nThe violence that the US military has inflicted on the rest of the world has always been accompanied by police violence and repression at home\, especially aimed at BIPOC people. But now\, with persistent ICE attacks and National Guard occupations of our cities\, it has become an overt and official wide-scale federal policy. The weapons and strategies that the US has used in its imperial wars are now being turned on its own population in a blatant and unconstitutional move towards authoritarian rule. The wars have come home. This webinar will address this undemocratic use of militarized force\, discuss its legality\, and point to who is profiting from it. It will also describe the resistance that has risen up in cities such as Portland\, Chicago\, and DC. \nRegister Below

SUMMARY:Eyes of the Rainbow: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, Nov. 3\, 5:45 pm\, at the Easthampton Library Annex\, 52 Main Street for the 2nd installment in our monthly film & discussion series\, Cuba in the Valley. This month’s film is Eyes of the Rainbow\, a documentary by noted Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando about the life of Assata Shakur\, the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader\, who escaped prison\, proclaiming her innocence\, and then spent the rest of her life in Cuba. She died in September 2025. The film takes place in 1997\, when she had been in exile in Cuba for 15 years. Director Rolando says:  “In the struggle of the African American people\, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice\, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles.” This is the voice\, she says\, of Assata Shakur.  Who was Assata?  How did she come to be in Cuba?  Why did she choose Cuba?  And why did the United States place her as a focal point in their demands for normalizing relations with Cuba and punish Cuba for not surrendering her? How is it that Assata became such a legend\, in the US and in Cuba? In Eyes of the Rainbow\, the film interweaves Assata’s story with her spiritual connection to the Yoruba Orisha Oya\, an Afro-Cuban goddess\, underlining the importance of culture and religion as well as politics in the African Diaspora and liberation struggle. The film is primarily in English\, subtitled when in Spanish\, and still incredibly relevant to the U.S. and Cuba of today.  \nAgustin Lao-Montes\, professor in the W.E.B. DuBois African American Studies Department at UMass Amherst and noted activist and scholar in the Afrodescendent movements of the U.S.\, Cuba and the Caribbean will lead a post film discussion bringing these connections together.

There is at least one big problem with it\, though: the bill’s Section 45 would repeal a citizen-initiated ballot measure – without going back to the voters first. It is in the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities\, and Energy and is being fast-tracked for passage in the fall. \nSection 45 calls for the repeal of a 1982 Act that created democratic control of dangerous nuclear technology. It contains two key things: Before any new nuclear power facilities are built in Massachusetts\, a majority of voters must approve\, AND the vote cannot even be held unless there is an operating\, permanent repository for the radioactive waste that would be generated. There is no permanent repository! The dangerous high-level waste is sitting out in the open at six reactor sites ringing Massachusetts\, including in Plymouth\, Rowe\, and nearby Seabrook and VT Yankee. \nGovernor Healey has chosen to just get rid of the law\, silencing our voices (and the democratic process) She wants to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRS) even though it would be many years before these are practical—and they will be extremely expensive\, still produce toxic nuclear waste\, and include safety and security concerns.  Far better to invest NOW in conservation and sustainable and safer forms of energy! \nPanelists for the webinar are long-time environmental activists who have decades of experience fighting the nuclear industry and the pro-nuclear lobby. They will discuss the history of nuclear power in and around Massachusetts and its toxic impact on our communities\, the Governor’s proposal for bringing in new nuclear\, and will also offer a more democratic and carbon-free\, nuclear-free path forward.  Join us and find out what you can do for a safer environment for all. \nDeborah Katz\, CSW is executive director of Citizens Awareness Network\, a non -profit\, grassroots New England organization fighting for clean air\, democracy\, and environmental justice. She coordinates environmental justice tours including tours to Utah\, Nevada\, Washington\, DC and South Carolina\, three Action Camps\, and  national People’s Summits on Nuclear Waste.  Katz is an author who published Valley of the Shadow\, a picture book on the grief process for the left behind. \nDiane Turco is Executive Director of Cape Downwinders\, a Cape Cod volunteer community grassroots organization with the mission to investigate\, educate\, and agitate for  protection of the people and environment from ongoing threats to communities from Holtec-Pilgrim’s decommissioning plans and nuclear waste dump at the site in Plymouth. After meeting Dr. Helen Caldicott in 1981\, Diane began working then to end nuclear weapons and nuclear power and continues today. She is a retired teacher of children with intensive special needs and a grandmother of three sweet boys. \nChris Nord is the co-founder and Board member of the C-10 Research and Education Foundation – whose mission includes real-time radiological monitoring near the Seabrook atomic reactor\, as well as education the public about safe and sustainable energy a alternatives.  He is Vice-President of the Citizens Awareness Network and founding member and non-violence trainer of the Clamshell Alliance.  He is the creator of the presentation “Nuclear Spent Fuel and Homeland Security: The Case forHardened Storage.” and also co-producer of “Circles Around the Fire”\, a 30-minute slide/video program on nuclear power in New England. \nOrganized by MAPA’s Nuclear Disarmament WG and Indigenous Solidarity WG. Cosponsored by the  Commonwealth Coalition For Democracy and Safe Energy

SUMMARY:Rally to Divest MA from Genocide
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 19\, in front of the Massachusetts State House to raise our voices against Israel’s decision to erase the very idea of a Palestine and to “put another nail in the coffin” of this hope. It’s time for Massachusetts to end its investments in the merchants of death who are profiting from this mass murder and starvation being carried on in front of the world. \nTime to get the word out that our divestment bill is about to be voted on by the\nLegislature \n\nWe will thank the legislators on the Public Service Committee for meeting with us over\nthe past 3 months and for engaging with us in serious conversation about the horror in\nGaza and why our bill could play a role in the effort to prevent the annihilation of\nPalestinians.\nWe will point out that our bill provides the Legislature to with an opportunity to make a\ncourageous statement on the moral issue of our time.\nA positive vote means that our bill moves on to the next stage in the legislative process.\nWithout a positive vote our bill dies.\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Wrong Way to Combat Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:MAPA will present a teach-in on the right and wrong ways to address antisemitism.  The workshop will include viewing a 40-minute film\,  “Exploring an Antiracist\, Solidarity Approach to Antisemitism”\, which is based on a conversation among seven well-informed people held in June of this year.  View the film trailer. \nThe meeting will include small-group discussions. This teach-in will encourage participants to think critically about the issues raised by the work of the MA Special Commission on Combating Antisemitism and its role in shaping state policy\, and motivate participants to get involved in expressing their views to their legislators about the work of the Commission and introduce mechanisms and tools for doing so. \nThe film and teach-in materials were developed by Together for an Inclusive Massachusetts (TIM)\, a diverse alliance of Jewish\, Muslim\, Arab\, labor\, education\, civil rights and other organizations\, including MAPA\, advocating for justice and equity in Massachusetts. \nThe event is in-person only. Attendance is open and free to MAPA members and supporters\, but to allow us to organize the discussions\, you must sign up to attend. Do not show up for the event without signing up. SUMMARY:Defend the Guard
DESCRIPTION:S.2471/H.3829 upholds the framework of the U.S. Constitution by ensuring that the Massachusetts National Guard is only called upon for active federal military service when there has been an official declaration of war by Congress\, as required by Article I\, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. Its purpose is to require a shift in American foreign policy and curtail the federal government’s ability to wage endless war without congressional oversight or accountability. Defend the Guard would have no effect on either deployments to other states in the union or overseas training missions.  \nThe hearing for this bill will take place on Tuesday\, September 16th in front of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs. The hearing will be at the Massachusetts State House in room A-1 from 1-5pm. Please join us in testifying in favor of this bill to uphold the U.S. Constitution. \nRegister below by 12pm on Monday September\, 15. You may testify in person or virtually.
