(Cambridge) On Thursday, October 27 at 5pm, residents of Greater Boston will hold a public standout to call for an end to weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the passage of the Yemen War Powers Resolution in Congress to end U.S. participation in the Saudi attack on Yemen.
“The rage in Congress against Saudi Arabia for deciding to cut oil production despite Biden’s pleas, opens up new possibilities for Congress to pass the Yemen War Powers Resolution that has been filed in both Houses of Congress” states Maryellen Kurkulos of Fall River and an official of Massachusetts Peace Action. “That resolution would effectively terminate all U.S. involvement for the Saudi war in Yemen.”
An organizer of the event, Paul Shannon of Somerville explains the motivation of the protesters: “Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has staked his reputation on winning the war in Yemen. Now that the ceasefire in Yemen has ended, anything can happen. We want to convince Congress that the Yemen War Powers resolution is the best legislative option for rebuking MBS – not just for his oil policies but also for his repression at home and war crimes in Yemen. Congress is furious with MBS for not accommodating U.S. desires regarding OPEC’s oil policies. But, for the sake of the people of Yemen, we need to ride this Congressional anger to get the Saudi-U.S. assault on Yemen finally ended.”
The event will feature a standout along the highway with participants holding banners and flags.
