SUMMARY:Ukraine War: Its End-Game Could End Up in Nuclear War
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker is Prof. Peter Kuznick of American University\, founder of the Nuclear Studies Institute and longtime advocate for nuclear disarmament. He will discuss how the Ukraine War is the most likely international flashpoint that could lead to WWIII between the US/NATO and Russia\, which would probably mean a catastrophic nuclear war. \nNow in its fifth year\, Prof. Kuznick will discuss the growing possibility of a Ukrainian military defeat later this year after Russia mounts an anticipated major offensive this spring or summer. Russian forces not only could push Ukrainian troops entirely out of the eastern region of the Donbas\, but also continue advancing west to the Dnieper River\, effectively occupying half of Ukraine’s territory and threatening major cities like Kharkiv and Odessa. \nThe US/NATO might choose to help Ukraine avoid such a defeat by escalating and sending in EU troops; airpower to set up a no-fly-zone; long-range missiles like the Tomahawk that could reach deep into Russia’s heartland; and drone/missile attacks as they have done in the past two years on Russian strategic early-warning radar systems\, airbases with nuclear-capable bombers\, and even to assassinate Putin in one of his residences near Moscow. These are red lines that Russia has said could lead to the use of nuclear weapons. \nProf. Kuznick will also discuss the very dangerous mistake made by both Biden and Trump to let the START nuclear arms limitation treaty to expire on Feb. 5. To avoid a hugely expensive and even more destabilizing nuclear arms race\, Trump should accept Putin’s offer of a 1-year extension of START while negotiating a new and even more effective treaty. Trump should also save billions of U.S. tax dollars by stopping development of the Golden Dome missile defense program. \nHe will also discuss the greatly exaggerated threat of Russia attacking European countries after it conquers Ukraine. This fear of Russia is driving EU governments to increase military spending and prepare for a major war with Russia by 2030\, while slashing their budgets for human service and environmental priorities. \nPeter Kuznick is Professor of History and founder and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University. A longtime advocate for nuclear disarmament\, he has written extensively about science and politics\, nuclear history\, and Cold War culture. He is the author of Beyond the Laboratory: Scientists as Political Activists in 1930s America (2019); the co-author of Rethinking the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with Akira Kimura; and Rethinking Cold War Culture (2010) with James Gilbert. He and Oliver Stone co-authored the 10 part Showtime documentary film series and book both titled The Untold History of the United States. You can follow Professor Kuznick on his substack: https://substack.com/@peterkuznick. \nRegister to attend: \n \nSponsored by Ukraine: A Time for Peace Campaign\, cosponsored by MAPA’s Nuclear Disarmament Working Group.

SUMMARY:¡Cuba Sî\, Bloqueo No! (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:¡Cuba Sí\, Bloqueo No! (a WIRN webinar) \nOur next War Industry Resisters Network  webinar on Wednesday\, April 22\, 8 pm ET will be about Cuba\, featuring Medea Benjamin and Danny Valdes. Please see below for information. You can register here: \n \nThe US has been sanctioning the people of Cuba for well over 60 years now. It has been an illegal\, unwarranted\, and immoral act of war and has crippled the Cuban economy with deadly results. Now\, with the fuel blockade\, conditions have worsened considerably\, with severe shortages in fuel\, food\, medicines\, and electricity. \nRecently\, CODEPINK’s Nuestra América Convoy delegation of 170 people delivered 6\,300 pounds of urgently needed medicines and medical supplies\, including neonatal equipment\, analgesics\, catheters\, and other critical hospital materials. The supplies\, valued at $433\,000\, were collected by Global Health Partners. \nThis webinar will address the nature of the US war on Cuba and the humanitarian efforts now happening on behalf of the Cuban people. It will be a call to action to stand with and speak out for our brothers and sisters in this beautiful neighboring nation. The presenters were organizers and participants for the recent delegation. \n \nPresenters: \nMedea Benjamin is a co-founder of CODEPINK and a prominent peace activist\, author\, and organizer focused on anti-war and human rights advocacy. \nDanny Valdes is a Cuban American organizer with Cuban Americans for Cuba and DSA leading national advocacy efforts to end the U.S. blockade and build solidarity.

SUMMARY:Justice 4 All Thursdays
DESCRIPTION:Via Turn Purple 2 Blue:\n\nGreater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN) invites you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and resistance to ICE and their cruel and lawless detention of our neighbors Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Regardless of any other political views\, you are welcome to join us and demand Justice 4 All so long as you do so non-violently. \nOur friends at Bearing Witness have been hosting gatherings at this location for many weeks. We are an unaffiliated group\, but very much aligned with their values and mission. Our goal is to add to the total number of hours that citizens stand in non-violent opposition to the deplorable detainment conditions at this location. If you have been to Bearing Witness on Wednesdays\, we would love to have you at Justice 4 All Thursdays. \nSchedule (Starting Thursday\, September 4 – more dates to follow) \n11:00-11:30 Welcome; music; announcements\n11:30-12:30 Stand with signs along District Ave\n12:30-1:00 Optional short march down to Mall Rd. \nWhat happens at this ICE office? \nICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center\, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.” \nWhat to expect at Justice 4 All? \nWe are committed to nonviolence\, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance\, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot\, and we do not block traffic on District Ave. \nSigns \nThis is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility\, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues\, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.  \nParking and other tips \nFor parking\, please use the Macy’s overflow lot (75 Burlington Mall Road\, follow signs for Macy’s\, see map). For those with mobility challenges\, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover\, Pressed Cafe\, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom. Before arriving\, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen\, hydration\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Earth's Greatest Enemy - A Film by Abby Martin
DESCRIPTION:Join your neighbors for this timely screening of “Earth’s Greatest Enemy” a new documentary film by Abby Martin\, that exposes the world’s biggest—and most unaccountable—polluter: the US military. https://earthsgreatestenemy.com/ \nExempt from international climate agreements and rarely scrutinized in mainstream reporting\, the Pentagon is the world’s single largest institutional polluter—spewing carbon\, contaminating water\, and scarring landscapes across the globe. Combining investigative journalism\, striking visuals\, and stories from impacted communities\, this film challenges audiences to rethink the hidden costs of a global military empire and its planetary consequences. Provocative\, urgent\, and eye-opening\, this is a documentary that will change how you see both the military and environmentalism. \n“Earth’s Greatest Enemy” reveals a hidden truth behind the climate crisis: the role of the U.S. military as the world’s largest institutional polluter\, tracing the link between war\, empire\, and ecological destruction. Drawing on powerful testimonies from veterans\, scientists\, and frontline communities\, it uncovers how military operations poison ecosystems\, accelerate global warming\, and sacrifice the future for endless expansion. From Alaska’s melting glaciers to contaminated bases across the U.S. and toxic battlefields abroad\, “Earth’s Greatest Enemy” delivers a provocative and unflinching examination of the untouchable institution playing an outsized role in the climate crisis. \n \nFree admission; donations are welcome!   Sign up today! \nVenue\nCalvary Church – Fellowship Hall*\n300 Massachusetts Ave\nArlington\, United States \nVenue is accessible \n*Fellowship Hall Entrance – side doors on Linwood Street up a set of exterior steps to red doors\n[alt. separate ground level entrance with elevator access to Hall on second floor] \nDoors open: 6:30 PM\nFilm starts: 7:00 PM\nRun time: 2 hrs\nPost Film Discussion until 9:30 PM\nLight refreshments provided \nSpecial thanks to Mass Peace Action’s Peace\, Justice and Climate working group and XR Boston for cosponsoring this film.\nThis event is being shown in conjunction with the Town of Arlington’s Ecofest.

SUMMARY:Volunteer callout: Tabling Action—End US-Israeli aggression (Iran\, Palestine\, Lebanon)
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone\, we are going to table again this Saturday\, April 25 from noon to 1pm outside of Park Street Station. The focus will be on ending the U.S. – Israeli war on Iran (and Gaza and Lebanon). We will get petitions signed and postcards filled out at the table while we leaflet and hold signs and the new Iran banner. \nWhile the present situation with the ceasefire is complicated\, our job is to keep the pressure on to cut off all present funding for this war of aggression\, to bring our 50\,000 troops home\, and to stop Trump’s request for billions more for the war. \nSo we need volunteers both for the tabling/petition gathering/ leafleting from noon to 1pm. \nPlease join us if you can starting at 11:30am. If you have questions please call 617-623-5288 \nOrganized by Paul Shannon\, MAPA Middle East Working Group \n  \n
