SUMMARY:Promoting Federal Investment in Public Education – Books Not Bombs
DESCRIPTION:The recent federally mandated Dept of Education cuts will impact every school district in the nation. Though the national organizations of teachers and educators are mobilized to resist\, parents lack statewide or national organizations\, and rarely pay attention to Congressional funding programs. The Books not Bombs campaign is an effort to leverage the support of the NEA\, AFT and AAUP\, to reach out to advocacy groups – for example Progressive Dems of America\, Our Revolution and Mothers Out Front chapters\, and Peace Action affiliates – whose members include parents\, grandparents students\, and teachers. This involves recognizing and rejecting the excessive allocation of tax dollars to military programs rather than civilian needs. \nThis late afternoon Forum complements No Kings Day mobilizations. \nPanelists: \nWelcome: Prof. Jonathan King – (AAUP & Mass Peace Action Education Fund) \nCongressional and State Budgets:  \n\nSchool Budget Needs – Deb McCarthy (Vice President\, Massachusetts Teachers Association)\nCuts in the Dept. of Ed. SUMMARY:Protecting Federal Investment in Public Education - Books Not Bombs
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nProtecting Federal Investment in Public Education – Books Not Bombs \nThe threats to federal education programs have become acute. Their local school district organizations rarely address the federal budget. Following up on our earlier Oct 26\, 2024 Conference we will be gathering on Saturday May 24th\, 2:00 – 5:00 pm to explore paths to protect the federal budget supporting public schools\, and continuing to try to reach out to parents and grandparents among our Peace Action affiliates and their local allies. \n  \n2:05: Panel  1 – The Emerging Federal Public Education Budget\nChair – Prof. Jonathan King (MIT & Mass Peace Action Education Fund);\nCivilian versus Pentagon Budget Allocations – Deborah Weinstein (Coalition for Human Needs);\nImpacts on the Young – Denisha Jones (Defending the Early Years);\nImpacts on Graduate Students – Evan MacKay (Harvard UAW Local). \n2:45: Panel 2 – Choices in Federal and State Budgets:\nChair- Deb McCarthy (V-P of Mass Teachers Association)\nTax Cuts and Related Fallacies – Karen Dolan (Institute for Policy Studies);\nRoles for State Legislatures – Rep.
