SUMMARY:Freedom of Expression At Risk!
DESCRIPTION:It’s no secret that censorship\, arrests\, and firings have punished almost every group or individual showing solidarity\, or sometimes merely sympathy\, for Palestinians being slaughtered and displaced by Israel in what experts unanimously regard as genocide. Two of our panelists were fired or disciplined for this solidarity. \nJoin us on August 19th at 7pm at the First Unitarian Church at 71 8th Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740 for an important discussion on how the repression of Palestine supporters has hit union workers and how unions can fight back to protect their members and defend civil and human rights.  Peggy Wang and Camilo Viveiros will speak about the growing threats to our freedom of expression. Wang will address the attacks on pro-Palestine voices which have led to people being on administrative leave as well as people losing their jobs. Viveiros will discuss the current climate unions face as their right to expression is being threatened. \nThere is no such thing as neutrality when it comes to internationalism. The Labor movement plays an important role in international issues\, such as opposing the genocide in Gaza\, and unions are obliged to recognize the class conflict among all nationalities while showing solidarity with working class people everywhere. Panelists will discuss some of the initiatives around building and extending that solidarity. \nRead Anna Feder’s powerful article published on the first anniversary of her firing from Emerson College \nJoin us on August 19th at 7pm at the First Unitarian Church at 71 8th Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740. \nRSVP requested but not required

SUMMARY:Keep Space for Peace not War (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Roy Jones is a former musician who was part of the Post Punk scene in London in the late 70’s and early 80s with his band Red Beat. During this time he was active in the movement to stop Cruise Missiles with nuclear warheads being deployed in Western Europe. He later toured the States in 1987 as a keyboard player with the Howard Jones band. In the early 90s he was a founder member and fund raiser for the peace group PARC – Pembrokeshire Against the Radar Campaign who successfully fought US military plans to build a massive Over the Horizon Radar installation in a similar location to Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC)\, a proposal originating from President Trump’s US Space Force now in planning. A long standing Buddhist and member of the lay Buddhist group SGI\, Roy has continued to use his music to fight against nuclear weapons as a supporter of the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). \nRegister for this event: \n \nAs a kind of trailer for this upcoming webinar\, check out this great 2-minute video done by the PARC against DARC campaign to stop a military radar in a Welsh National Park. \nKeep the Space above us for peace and science not war and profit! \nMusician Roy Jones outside of Welsh Parliament. SUMMARY:Commemorative Walk & Meditation for Hiroshima/Nagasaki Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Observe the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki with a silent and commemorative walk and meditation by the water. The walk will begin at 9:30 am at the Temple and end at the beach at Cook’s Pond. A meditation will begin afterwards on the beach\, and both the walk and meditation will be held in silence. This is a gesture in remembrance of all who suffered and died in the bombings\, and as a contemplative act of bearing witness to the continuing danger of nuclear weapons in our world today. \nFor those who are unable to walk\, there will be coordinated ride-sharing from the Temple to the pond so that all may participate.

SUMMARY:Fallout Flicks Presents: White Light Black Rain
DESCRIPTION:Join us in viewing White Light Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, directed by Steven Okazaki! We will follow the viewing with a discussion\, to share our reactions and ways to address the threat that nuclear weapons pose. \n \nAs the US and other countries build up their nuclear arsenals amidst global areas of conflict\, the unthinkable threat of nuclear war has become very real—and very frightening.  Through the powerful recollections of the survivors of the atomic bombs\, which leveled two Japanese cities in 1945\, the film ‘White Light Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki’ presents a deeply moving look at the painful legacy of using nuclear weapons in war.

SUMMARY:Letter Delivery to Katherine Clark
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, Congresswoman Katherine Clark tweeted that “I am horrified by the starvation in Gaza\,” yet she supports sending Israel the weapons it uses to deliberately starve Gaza. \nWe need to point out this contradiction and demand that Clark takes action to end our country’s complicity in Israel’s genocide. \nRight now there is bill in Congress that would do exactly that\, the Block the Bombs Act (H.3565). This bill would prevent the federal government from sending Israel some of the most destruction weapons being used in its genocide. \nSign this letter to tell Clark that tweets are not enough\, she must take immediate action to end our complicity in the genocide in Gaza. We are demanding Clark meet with her constituents to discuss legislation to stop the genocide and hold Israel accountable. \nWe will be delivering this letter to Clark’s office Thursday\, August 7th at noon\, carrying pots and pans to symbolize the starvation unfolding in Gaza. Meet at the Malden Center T-stop. \n  \nSponsored by the Arise & Resist Coalition\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, National Iranian American Council – MA Chapter\, Doctors Against Genocide\, About Face Veterans\, Veterans for Peace\, If Not Now Boston\, Jewish Voice for Peace Boston\, Boston Democratic Socialists of America\, Boston Interfaith Ceasefire\, Green-Rainbow Party Boston\, Arlington for Palestine\, Lexington for Palestine\, and Medford for Palestine

SUMMARY:Merrimack Valley People for Peace Commemoration Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Via Merrimack Valley for Peace \n“On Wednesday\, August 6th\, the Merrimack Valley People for Peace will hold a vigil in front of the Old Town Hall in Andover Center from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.  The vigil commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first use of nuclear weapons in war and the destruction of Hiroshima\, Japan at the close of World War II.  The United States bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the only deployments of atomic weapons in history.  It is estimated that more than 90\,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and more than 60\,000 people were killed in Nagasaki.  Testing and manufacture of nuclear weapons has continued to damage the environment since. Atomic weapons now are much stronger and numerous\, so a continuing danger to all life on earth.  More countries now have nuclear weapons and others are working to develop them. The vigil is free and open to the public.  Participants are encouraged to bring signs.” \n

SUMMARY:80 Years Later\, Remembering and Repenting The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
DESCRIPTION:Via Pat Ferrone\, St. Susanna Pax Christi \n“The first use of an atomic bomb\, “Little Boy\,” was exploded over Hiroshima\, Japan on August\n6\, 1945. Its explosive power immediately annihilated between 70\,000 and 80\,000 human\nbeings\, and maimed uncountable others. By the end of 1945\, 140\,000 were dead. Just 3 days\nlater\, knowing the effects of the first bomb\, “Fat Man” was dropped on Nagasaki\, killing 40\,000\npeople instantly\, with estimates of up to 100\,000 dead within 5 years: innocent men\, women\nand children. Years later\, Albert Einstein was to lament what he believed was his contribution to\nthese horrific events. He wrote\, “If I had foreseen Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, I would have torn\nup my formula in 1905.” \nNow\, eighty years later\, with nine nuclear nations possessing enough nuclear weapons to\ncause the deaths of millions and millions of people\, the devastation of our global home\, the\ndestruction of cultures\, and nuclear winter\, we raise our voices to plead for the only sane\noption available to us: that nuclear weapons be banished from this earth\, beginning with our\nvery own efforts in the United States. Currently\, we are pursuing a program to update our\nnuclear arsenal\, at a staggering cost of $1.7 trillion over 30 years. \nOn Wednesday\, August 6\, at 4:30 pm\, a program planned by the St. Susanna Pax Christi\nGroup\, will take place on the Dedham Town Green to remember the world-shattering events of\nAugust 6 and 9\, 1945. Part of the program will be a shared reading of “Original Child Bomb\,”\nwritten in 1962 by Thomas Merton\, Trappist monk. We will lament the past\, and acknowledge\nthe present danger of a nuclear exchange. This year\, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set\nthe “Doomsday Clock” at 89 seconds to midnight – the closest ever to human extinction.\nPlease join us as we commit ourselves to urge our government\, and the world\, to move “Back\nfrom the Brink” of nuclear war.” \n

SUMMARY:Boston Hiroshima-Nagasaki 80th Anniversary Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nA coalition of Boston area peace\, justice and environmental organizations are preparing a major event to mark and to build from the 80th anniversaries of the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Boston area events on August 6 will be one of many across the state and around the world urging that nuclear weapons be abolished to help ensure human survival. \nOver the past 80 years\, many Japanese A-bomb survivors have transformed their excruciating physical and emotional traumas into the world’s most powerful force for nuclear weapons abolition\, forging the still very fragile the “nuclear taboo.” Their basic message has been that nuclear weapons and human beings cannot coexist.” For their courageous and inspired campaigning\, they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this past December. \nThose two primitive A-bombs destroyed both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and took the lives of more than 200\,000 Japanese citizens – young and old – almost immediately. Tens of thousands more over time due to radiation exposure. In every country that has since developed nuclear weapons\, including the United States\, citizens have been killed as a result of uranium mining\, nuclear weapons testing\, and the weapons production. \nWe are closer to nuclear war than at any time since the Manhattan Project began developing nuclear weapons. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have set their Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight – annihilation. Following the pattern of dozens of U.S. preparations and threats to initiate nuclear war during international crises and war\, – most recently in the Iraq Wars – Russian leaders have rattled their nuclear sabers in their war against Ukraine\, and the US recently helped Ukraine attack Russian air bases where nuclear weapons were stored. Earlier this year\, India\, and Pakistan\, each a nuclear power\, brought back to the nuclear abyss in their Kashmir related war.  And two nuclear weapon states\, Israel and the U.S.\, broke another taboo when they attacked the non-weaponized nuclear enrichment facilities of Iran\, a non-nuclear weapon state\, in June of this year. \nThe greatest danger of nuclear war arises from the U.S.-China military confrontation\, especially over Taiwan and in the South China Sea where an accident\, incident or miscalculation could easily escalate to nuclear war. \nTo continue to hold humanity at risk\, the United States is spending approximately $30 billion a year to upgrade its nuclear arsenal and nuclear weapons delivery systems. At a time of massive cutbacks in health\, housing\, education\, foreign aid\, and other essential social services\, this is money that should be used to support people’s lives\, not to threaten human extinctions. \nContrary to the propaganda of the time\, we now know that most senior U.S. military leaders advised that Japan’s surrender could be achieved on terms acceptable to the United States without the A-bombings. And we now know that the A-bombs did not end the war. Japanese leaders opted to surrender on August 8 on learning that the Soviet Union had entered the war. Tragically\, the myth generated by President Truman’s politically motivated lie that the A-bombings saved U.S. lives has served as a legitimating rationale. To preserve that myth\, the history\, quotations\, and images related to the first A-bombings in the Smithsonian Institution’s 50th anniversary Hiroshima-Nagasaki memorial exhibition were excised and only the Enola Gay\, the bomber that dropped the Hiroshima A-bomb\, was displayed. \nThe Boston Hiroshima-Nagasaki coalition has prepared this major event for Dewey Square\, downtown Boston. The event will feature videos and live speeches from Hibakusha (nuclear weapons witness/survivors)\, scientists and leading nuclear disarmament movement leaders from around the world\, film and photographic showings and displays\, and in the Japanese tradition memorial lantern floats. Beyond the educational work that will be central to the commemorative events\, organizers will be urging people across the Commonwealth and beyond to support the Back from the Brink Campaign\, initiated by Physicians for Social Responsibility\, and H.Res. 317\, related legislation initiated by Rep. McGovern and supported by several Massachusetts Representatives\, as well as the  Responsible Investment bill (S.767/H.1264) which would divest Massachusetts pension funds from WMD producers and those who finance them. \nInitiators of the Boston-Hiroshima Nagasaki Coalition include the Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament and Common Security\, Massachusetts Peace Action\, the American Friends Service Committee\, Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility\, September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows\, and Back from the Brink. \nOrganizations and individuals\, join us!   Write to owen@masspeaceaction.org for information and /or to join our organizing committee. \nHuman beings and nuclear weapons cannot coexist! \nNo More Hiroshimas! No More Nagasakis! No More Hibakusha (nuclear weapons victims/survivors) \nMoney for people not for nuclear annihilation! \nNo money to update nuclear weapons! \nNo War with Iran\, Russia\, China! \n

SUMMARY:Hiroshima & Nagasaki Evening Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of conversation about the longstanding impacts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, and the current state of nuclear weapons. \nOn August 6\, 1945\, the USA dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. A few days later\, on August 9th\, the USA dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. These bombs were glorified to be the conclusion of WWII\, and are inhumanely remembered by many Americans as making us saviors. In reality\, Japan was going to surrender from WWII with or without these bombs being used\, and because they were used\, more than 200\,000 people were instantly killed\, with tens of thousands more dying due to related causes in the following years. \nIn this conversation\, we will approach the political\, societal\, and personal aspects of the atomic bomb use in 1945\, the lasting impacts that this decision caused\, and the present day threats of nuclear weapons. This conversation will center on images and stories compiled by Nihon Hidankyo – followed by a full-group discussion on these topics. We hope this dialogue will bring people together to build trust\, educate about the threat of nuclear weapons and war\, and bring confidence in taking action to ensure a secure\, peaceful\, and prospering future for all.
