SUMMARY:The Trillion Dollar War Machine
DESCRIPTION:How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home \nAmerica spends a trillion dollars a year on its military. This extraordinary spending not only detracts from our ability to address pressing social problems but compels us into foreign wars to justify our vast arsenal. Sold to us in the name of “security\,” our military industrial complex actually makes us far less safe. \nTop policy experts William D. Hartung and Ben Freeman will discuss their new book The Trillion Dollar War Machine\, which follows the profits of militarism from traditional Pentagon contractors\, who receive more than half of the Pentagon’s budget\, to the upstart high-tech firms that shamelessly promote unproven and destabilizing technologies. They unmask the enablers of the war machine—politicians\, lobbyists\, the media\, Hollywood\, think tanks\, and so many more—whose work enriches a wealthy elite at the expense of everybody else\, spreading conflict around the world and embroiling America in endless wars. A damning tour de force\, The Trillion Dollar War Machine shows who is pulling the strings and pushing for war\, and offers a blueprint for how we can shut down the war machine and restore American security and prosperity. \nWilliam D. Hartung focuses on the arms industry and US military budget. He was previously the director of the Arms and Security Program at the Center for International Policy and the co-director of the Center’s Sustainable Defense Task Force. Bill is the co-author\, with Ben Freeman\, of the recently released The Trillion Dollar War Machine: How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home. He is also the author of Prophets of War: Lockheed Martin and the Making of the Military-Industrial Complex (Nation Books\, 2011) and the co-editor\, with Miriam Pemberton\, of Lessons from Iraq: Avoiding the Next War (Paradigm Press\, 2008). And Weapons for All (HarperCollins\, 1995) is a critique of US arms sales policies from the Nixon through Clinton administrations. \nBill previously directed programs at the New America Foundation and the World Policy Institute. He also worked as a speechwriter and policy analyst for New York State Attorney General Robert Abrams. Hartung’s articles on security issues have appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the Los Angeles Times\, The Nation\, and the World Policy Journal.\nHe has been a featured expert on national security issues on CBS 60 Minutes\, NBC Nightly News\, the PBS Newshour\, CNN\, Fox News\, and scores of local\, regional\, and international TV and radio outlets. \nBen Freeman is director of the Democratizing Foreign Policy program at the Quincy Institute. Ben is the co-author\, with William Hartung\, of the recently released The Trillion Dollar War Machine: How Runaway Military Spending Drives America into Foreign Wars and Bankrupts Us at Home. He investigates money in politics\, defense spending\, and foreign influence in America. He is the author of The Foreign Policy Auction\, which was the first book to systematically analyze the foreign influence industry in the United States. Before joining the Quincy Institute\, Ben founded the Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative at the Center for International Policy\, served as Deputy Director of the National Security program at Third Way\, and was a National Security Fellow at the Project On Government Oversight. At the latter\, he spear-headed creation of the “Foreign Influence Database\,” a repository of propaganda distributed by foreign agents that was previously unavailable online. \nBen earned a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University\, where he taught in the Political Science Department and the Bush School of Government and Public Service. He is currently a faculty member at the Institute for Defense and Business\, where he teaches seminars on the defense budget process and the foreign influence industry. \nHis work has appeared in numerous media outlets\, including the New York Times\, Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, Wall Street Journal\, and Politico. Ben has appeared on CNN\, BBC\, NPR\, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and numerous other media outlets. He has also testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee. \nCosponsored by War Industries Resistance Network and Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund \n \n  \nRegister

SUMMARY:Veterans Healthcare Choices: Privatization and Its Negative Impact on Women Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Seeking Women’s Health Justice\, a subcommittee of MAPA’s Fund Healthcare Not Warfare campaign\, examines women’s health from the perspective of justice – with the awareness that peace is a fundamental issue of health. The cost of U.S. militarism drains economic resources at the expense of health and lives. Through awareness and understanding of the culture that promotes war\, we examine the intersection of peace and women’s health\, which is justice. Our work offers paths of action that can be taken to oppose militarism and to nurture health and enhance justice. \nIn this webinar\, veterans’ health care policy analyst Suzanne Gordon will delve into the Veterans Administration specialized efforts to treat female veterans\, and how this care and expertise is being lost due to this transition to private sector care. \nCase in point: one out of three women veterans has experienced some form of sexual harassment or assault during military service. Every VA mental health provider is required to take basic military sexual trauma (MST) training and some specialize in this area. However\, the VA MISSION Act of 2018 established a private sector network\, the Veterans Community Care Program\, that contracts private-sector therapists who typically have no MST training. \nFor over a decade\, opponents of the integrated healthcare system run by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have assured veterans that privatizing their care through widespread outsourcing to private sector providers will give them more healthcare choices\, forming a new network of timely\, high quality\, and ultra-convenient care. But if more VA care is outsourced to the private sector\, will veterans\, in fact\, enjoy “a vast array of healthcare choices\,” as one privatization advocate claimed? Will they drive shorter distances for their medical or mental health appointments? And will they see reduced wait-times? Finally\, are there really thousands of doctors\, therapists\, and other clinicians ready and able to care for the nine million American veterans currently enrolled in the VA? The Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute (VHPI) released a comprehensive\, 50-state report entitled: “Veterans’ Health Care Choice — Myth or Reality? A State- by- State Reality Check of the False Promise of VA Privatization.” It definitively answers these questions. \nSuzanne Gordon is a senior policy analyst at the VHPI\, an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the UCSF School of Nursing\, and an award-winning journalist. She has authored or coauthored 11 books\, the most recent being Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health\, Healing\, and Hope to the Nation’s Veterans. Together with Lisa Hayes\, she has written a play about patient safety and teamwork entitled Bedside Manners. \nRegister to attend: \n \nRead the report Veterans’ Health Care Choice — Myth or Reality? Click on Massachusetts in the graphic on this page to see the report for the Commonwealth.

SUMMARY:No War with Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 13 @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nPresident Trump’s provocative acts towards Venezuela and the attacks on boats in the Caribbean Sea are against military and international law. The United States has been engaged in a carefully orchestrated series of ever-increasing provocations against Venezuela. Our military started with attacks on small fishing boats\, claiming that they were trying to transport drugs. It escalated its attacks to include bombing the survivors of the attacks. This week they went farther\, seizing an oil tanker and bringing it to a US port\, planning to steal the oil.  Trump’s administration WANTS a war against Venezuela and is working hard to provoke it. We say \n\nNo to Regime Change\nNo to Decapitation\nNo to Military Attack\nBring our Forces Home\nGet the CIA out of Venezuela\n\nJoin us Saturday\, December 13\, at 1:00 PM at Park Street Station to rally against war. \nThis is urgent. Our country is moving towards war so quickly that we must oppose it equally quickly.

SUMMARY:Justice 4 All Thursdays
DESCRIPTION:Via Turn Purple 2 Blue:\n\nGreater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN) invites you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and resistance to ICE and their cruel and lawless detention of our neighbors Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Regardless of any other political views\, you are welcome to join us and demand Justice 4 All so long as you do so non-violently. \nOur friends at Bearing Witness have been hosting gatherings at this location for many weeks. We are an unaffiliated group\, but very much aligned with their values and mission. Our goal is to add to the total number of hours that citizens stand in non-violent opposition to the deplorable detainment conditions at this location. If you have been to Bearing Witness on Wednesdays\, we would love to have you at Justice 4 All Thursdays. \nSchedule (Starting Thursday\, September 4 – more dates to follow) \n11:00-11:30 Welcome; music; announcements\n11:30-12:30 Stand with signs along District Ave\n12:30-1:00 Optional short march down to Mall Rd. \nWhat happens at this ICE office? \nICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center\, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.” \nWhat to expect at Justice 4 All? \nWe are committed to nonviolence\, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance\, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot\, and we do not block traffic on District Ave. \nSigns \nThis is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility\, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues\, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.  \nParking and other tips \nFor parking\, please use the Macy’s overflow lot (75 Burlington Mall Road\, follow signs for Macy’s\, see map). For those with mobility challenges\, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover\, Pressed Cafe\, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom. Before arriving\, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen\, hydration\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Block the Bombs Action Hour
DESCRIPTION:Since a ceasefire was announced on Oct 9\, Israel has committed over 700 violations and killed 386 Palestinians\, including\, on average\, two children per day. Congress must pass the Block the Bombs Act to bring about a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and across the region. \nThe Block the Bombs Act (H.R. 3565)\, which currently has 57 co-sponsors\, was introduced by Representatives Ramirez\, Jacobs\, Jayapal\, and Pocan. If adopted\, the bill would prohibit the President from selling\, transferring\, or exporting certain defense articles or services to Israel\, except in specified circumstances. These weapons have been used to inflict mass civilian casualties and destroy civilian infrastructure\, including 2000-lb bombs. When dropped\, they can lead to a half-mile radius of both building damage and severe injuries to humans\, including ruptured lungs\, burst sinuses\, and torn off limbs. \nU.S. weapons are responsible for tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths. Americans are tired of seeing it – 75% of Democratic voters\, and 60% of all voters\, oppose the US giving more weapons to Israel. They are also tired of paying for it with their taxes – $21.7B since October 7th. It is time for Congress to use its leverage as the controller of military aid to force Israel to abide by the ceasefire. \nJoin us for an action hour to call on our members of Congress to sign on. We will gather on Zoom\, go through a brief intro\, and make phone calls to Congress\, demanding they support this bill. We will walk through a call script for those who would like some help on what to say on the calls. \nRegister Below!

SUMMARY:Stop Trump’s Blockade of Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 20th @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nJoin us Saturday\, December 20\, at 1:00 PM at Park Street Station to rally\nagainst war.\nOn Tuesday President Trump proclaimed “I am ordering a Total and Complete Blockade of all sanctioned Oil Tankers going into and out of Venezuela…Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada every assembled in the history of South America. It will only get bigger\, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before.” \nThe Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court clearly defines “the blockade of the ports or coasts of a State by the armed forces of another State” as an act of aggression. This proclamation is an act of war. In response Venezuela’s government ordered its navy to escort tankers from port\, escalating the risk of confrontation (Boston Globe Dec. 18). \nThis blockade is only the latest U.S. provocation that includes murdering 95 civilians in boats off South America’s coast (Deliberately killing 2 survivors of these attacks while in the water); declaring a No Fly Zone over all Venezuelan airspace; and last week seizing an oil tanker carrying Venezuelan oil on the high seas. President Trump has told us that these attacks are only the beginning. \nThese provocations are backed up by a vast war armada\, equipped with the most modern missiles and bombers\, sitting off Venezuela’s coast\, In addition 15\,000 U.S. soldiers on those ships and in Puerto Rico are ready to invade at a moment’s notice. \nWith the situation getting more dangerous by the day\, the goal of the rally is to call on everyone to do what they can to prevent war. \nJoin us to Demand: \n\nAn immediate end to the Blockade of Venezuela’s ports\nEnding Trump’s piracy of oil tankers on the high seas.\nStopping all executions of civilians in small boats off the coast of South America\n\nAnd most important\, withdraw all the U.S. warships and weapons from the coast of Venezuela and bring our sailors\, airmen and marines home for the holidays where they belong.

SUMMARY:Stop Regime Change War on Venezuela!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 3rd @ 3pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nNorthampton Town Hall\nHolyoke Veterans Memorial Park\nPresident Trump’s illegal acts of war against Venezuela are a violation of US\, military\, and international law. The United States has been engaged in a carefully orchestrated series of ever-increasing provocations against Venezuela culminating in the bombing of Caracas and the abduction of the Venezuelan president and his wife. \nThe US government started with attacks on small fishing boats and murdered the survivors of the attacks. It went farther\, seizing an oil tanker and bringing it to a US port\, planning to steal the oil.  The Trump administration has now unilaterally launched a regime change war against Venezuela \nWe Demand: \n\nNo to Regime Change\nNo to Decapitation\nNo to Military Attack\nBring our Forces Home\nGet the CIA out of Venezuela\n\nJoin us Saturday\, January 3rd\, at 3:00 PM at Park Street Station\, Northampton Town Hall\, and Holyoke’s Veterans Memorial Park to rally against war. \nThis is urgent. Our country is moving towards authoritarianism so quickly that we must oppose it with like speed.

SUMMARY:What is Trump’s Golden Dome? Are We Paying for Ineffective Missile Defense and a Spiraling Nuclear Arms Race?
DESCRIPTION:Missile Defense\, as the term implies\, is defending against enemy missiles carrying an explosive payload. The origin of these anti-missile systems dates back to the Cold War space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union\, an era when intercontinental ballistic missiles could be deployed in space to launch satellites to orbit or travel thousands of miles carrying nuclear weapons. Missile defense systems were deployed by both superpowers in the 1960s\, but proved to be technically infeasible and prohibitively expensive. They were ultimately abandoned. \nFeasibility and cost notwithstanding\, the U.S. military and weapons contractors succeeded in pursuing these systems during the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush administrations. Now\, Donald Trump has launched the ambitious Golden Dome project\, yet another missile defense program based on technologies and space-based interceptors proven to be unworkable. \nIn this webinar\, we will hear three experts discuss the technical and policy aspects of Golden Dome. \nTed Postol\, professor emeritus at MIT\, is an internationally known analyst and long-time critic of the missile defense program. He has held positions at the Argonne National Laboratory\, the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment\, and the Pentagon\, where he functioned as scientific advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and technical and policy advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. At Stanford\, he helped build a weapons technology training program for development and arms control policy. His awards include the 1995 Hilliard Roderick Prize in Science\, Arms Control\, and International Security from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) which lauded him as “by-far the strongest\, technically-trained\, independent arms control analyst of his generation” and the mentor of “a whole generation of independent arms control policy analysts.” He has been awarded for whistle-blowing about governmental false claims about missile defenses like the Patriot system in the 1991 Gulf War. He is a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations\, a board member of The Committee for the Republic\, and a former editor of the journal International Security. \nDaryl Kimball is the Executive Director of the Arms Control Association (ACA)\, Washington\, DC\, where since 2001 he has led the organization’s advocacy campaigns on major issues including cancellation of new nuclear weapons programs\, the 2010 New START agreement\, the 2015 P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran\, the entry into force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty\, and strengthening the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. He is publisher of the organization’s monthly journal\, Arms Control Today\, a frequent expert source for reporters and policymakers\, and has written and spoken extensively about all matters related to nuclear arms control. Previously\, he was the executive director of the Coalition to Reduce Nuclear Dangers\, and the Director of Security Programs for Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). There\, he helped to expose and accelerate the cleanup of a toxic\, Cold War-era nuclear weapons production site in his hometown of Oxford\, Ohio\, led the advocacy for the 1992 nuclear test moratorium in Congress and for the U.N.’s endorsement of the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. \nSubrata Ghoshroy\, a former Senior Defense Analyst for the Government Accountability Office (GAO)\, was the lead Technical Evaluator for its investigation into allegations of fraud in the missile defense program. When the GAO tried to cover up his discovery that contractors were lying about a $100-million test\, he blew the whistle and quit the GAO shortly afterwards. He then joined MIT as a Research Affiliate with the Program in Science\, Technology\, and Society. \nLinda Pentz Gunter\, moderator\, is the curator and editor of Beyond Nuclear International and the international specialist at Beyond Nuclear. Prior to her work in anti-nuclear advocacy\, she was a journalist for 20 years in print and broadcast\, working for USA Network\, Reuters\, The Times (UK) and other US and international outlets.
