SUMMARY:Militarism vs the Care Economy and Degrowth
DESCRIPTION:At this critical time\, when climate change and war are devastating the planet and causing tremendous suffering\, the current political climate is taking everything in the wrong direction. The system of endless growth and accumulation of wealth in fewer and fewer hands at the expense of everyone else and the earth cannot be sustained. How can we do more than hold back the most extreme antidemocratic and environmentally destructive measures and work together to realize a common vision of a livable world? Speakers Harrris Gruman\, Juan Jose De Blas and Anna Prouty will address how we can transition from the current disaster/militarist economy to a peace\, climate\, and justice-oriented care and degrowth economy. They will lay out some of the principles and benefits of a care economy and degrowth and talk about practical steps we can take here in the US to bring about the world we want to see. \nSpeakers: \nHarris Gruman – Executive Director of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) State Council. He is co-founder and co-chair of Raise Up Massachusetts\, a coalition of 150 organizations which successfully campaigned to raise the minimum wage to $15\, enact paid family and medical leave\, and pass the Fair Share Amendment\, aka millionaire’s tax. A veteran of decades of successful issue and electoral work in community and labor organizing\, he is an astute political strategist. A former executive director of the Neighbor to Neighbor Education Fund\, he studied at Johns Hopkins University. At MAPA\, he  is a member of the Board of Directors\, the Ukraine Committee\, and of the Peace and the Working Class Working Group. \nJuan Jose Deblas is an active member of the International Degrowth Network as well as the Spanish member group Red Decrecer para Vivir. He sees degrowth as an opportunity to rethink the world’s economic and social systems\, address the imbalance between the Global North and South\, and protect humanity’s most vulnerable. He is Coordinator of the IDN practice circle\, Secretary of organizing and general circles\, and helping with European newsletter. He helped organize the September 2025 Beyond Growth conference in the Spanish parliament. \nAnna Prouty\, Media + Outreach Coordinator at the Degrowth Institute\, is a writer\, artist and community organizer living in Cascadia. She is the media and outreach coordinator for DGI\, and coordinates the Policy Working Group. She was also a co-founder of DegrowUS. When not at DGI\, she works for the Center for Rural Livelihoods in Oregon\, and organizes around economic democracy\, land restoration and bioregionalism. SUMMARY:GLOBAL ECO-RESTORATION AND POWER DYNAMICS: Critical Ecosystems in Brazil\, Senegal and the US
DESCRIPTION:Climate disruption is increasing and with it so is polarization\, both within the US as well as among nation states. Now more than ever it is incumbent upon us to highlight successful efforts to create a more sustainable\, just\, and peaceful world. \nImportant initiatives in regenerative agriculture\, agroforestry\, soil restoration\, and related practices are making significant contributions to climate adaptation\, often contributing to the resilience of communities and international collaboration. \nThis webinar\, a joint project of the MAPA Peace & Climate group and of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate (Bio4Climate)\, will focus on locations outside the US where regenerative practices largely based on local initiatives have been successful on a significant scale. \nOur panelists will address a number of issues including the following: \n\nWhat aspects of these projects worked well and less well?\nHow were local communities engaged\, especially those from marginalized groups?\nWere there any significant collaborations with organizations in the Global North—and if so\, are these collaborations continuing during the second Trump administration?\nAre there any impacts within these regions of US foreign/military policy\, e.g. local US military bases?\n\nSpeakers: \nBeck Mordini (moderator)\, Executive Director of Bio4Climate. She has worked on protecting biodiversity at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and protecting undocumented workers in Washington State. \nJohn Leary\, Founder and Executive Director of Mother Trees\, is an advocate for sustainable agriculture with 20+ years experience in the field. He has dedicated his life to helping communities around the world and designing and implementing landscape restoration programs that rehabilitate farms and restore forest ecosystems. \nOusmane Aly Pame\, PhD\, is distinguished professor of literature at the Université of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar\, Senegal and the founder and President of REDES (Réseau pour l’Emergence et le Dévelopement des Ecovillages au Sahel). A respected regional community leader and former mayor of the eco-town of Guede Chantier\, Dr. Pame has been instrumental in fostering sustainable development in the Sahel region. \nRob de Laet\, is a Dutch entrepreneur\, climate strategist and project lead at Cooling the Climate. Together with Peter Bunyard and others\, Rob is developing the Cooling Climate Chaos project aimed at rapid restoration of the earth’s water cycles and regeneration of the biosphere. Their book Cooling the Climate: How to Revive the Biosphere and Cool the Earth Within 20 Years was published in November 2024. \n \nRegister for this event.

SUMMARY:Day of Action for Weapons and Fossil Fuel Divestment
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, May 20th\, from 12pm to 3:30pm for a day of action at the Massachusetts State House! \nRegister to attend. \n \nThe Massachusetts Public Fund is invested in entities involved with weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and climate risks. The focus of the day will be on two bills\, one divesting pension funds from entities involved with the manufacturing\, producing\, or selling of WMD\, and the other assessing the public fund investments for any climate risks and divesting the fund from those risks. We want the state to move our money away from unethical systems and reinvest in sustainable\, socially-responsible alternatives. \nNo experience is necessary! Trainings and briefings on the priority legislation\, an Act Promoting Responsible Investment (S.767/H.1264)\, and an act to Eliminate Climate Risk Investments (H.2811)\, will be provided. \nTraining sessions will be offered on Thursday\, May 15th at 7pm ET and Monday May 19th at 7pm ET. SUMMARY:To Win Our Survival: Building the Next Era of our Movements
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, facilitators Daisy Carter and Rebecca Harris from The Climate Mobilization Project will invite participants to reflect on the moment we’re in\, and where movements for peace and climate justice can go from here. Building on Climate Mobilization Project’s work with food sovereignty\, mutual aid\, climate justice and anti-war groups in Kentucky and Virginia\, we will share tools for participants to explore their role in supporting survival programs that expand access to climate disaster preparedness\, food\, care\, and more while growing movements for climate\, economic\, and racial justice. \nSurvival programs are a bold new approach to growing movements that have enough people power to fight back.Groups across the U.S. have come together to build a mass grassroots movement with the power and resources to win our survival. We are growing this movement by organizing people into grassroots projects that grow a regenerative economy and culture; expand food\, energy\, water\, and land access and sovereignty; and fight back together against the systems that threaten our lives and communities. \n \n  \nDaisy Carter (she/they) is a New Orleans native\, queer multi-disciplinary artist\, yogi and climate justice organizer working at the intersections of mutual aid\, disaster resiliency\, African-American herbalism\, and grassroots organizing. Daisy is inspired by the black radical movements of the so-called U.S and African diaspora\, reimagining what healing + self-determination look like for frontline\, BIPOC (black\, brown\, and people of color) communities who are most vulnerable to climate disaster. For the past few years\, they have been organizing around mutual aid\, environmental + climate justice\, and building BIPOC and marginalized leadership throughout Kentucky. In 2021\, they founded Rise and Shine\, a community-led mutual aid organization building power and solidarity with low-income\, BIPOC\, LGBTQ+\, and other marginalized communities in Bowling Green\, Kentucky and beyond. She has also led numerous political campaigns\, direct actions\, and led outreach + communications strategy for organizations such as The Sierra Club\, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth\, and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for a Moral Revival. At the Climate Mobilization\, she is supporting programming\, the development of the Movement Incubation Program\, and the creation of climate survival projects. \nRebecca Harris (she/her) is Resource Organizing Director and Co-Leader at Climate Mobilization Project. She first began organizing at age 16 during the movement to end the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. After years of organizing for economic justice and housing rights\, she joined Climate Mobilization Project as Organizing Director\, a role in which she coached dozens of local climate groups\, launched the campaign for a national Climate Emergency Declaration\, and supported the organization in its increasing focus on racial and economic justice and anti-militarism. Rebecca previously worked as a journalist covering equity in Chicago public schools and as the Development and Communications Manager at Latino Union of Chicago\, an immigrants’ and workers’ rights organization. She is a 2017 graduate of the Reframe Mentorship in strategic communications. \n \nRegister to attend.

Would the rebound of nuclear power be an environmental disaster at the expense of truly renewable sources of energy that are available to us today? Linda Pentz Gunter of Beyond Nuclear will moderate. \nM.V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament\, Global and Human Security and Professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs\, University of British Columbia\, Vancouver\, Canada. Ramana is the author of “The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India” (Penguin Books\, 2012)\, co?editor of “Prisoners of the Nuclear Dream” (Orient Longman\, 2003) and the author of “Nuclear is not the Solution: The Folly of Atomic Power in the Age of Climate Change” (Verso books\, 2024). He is a member of the International Panel on Fissile Materials (IPFM)\, the International Nuclear Risk Assessment Group (INRAG)\, the Canadian Pugwash Group\, and the team that produces the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Leo Szilard Award from the American Physical Society. \nPaul Gunter is a longtime environmental activist\,  energy policy analyst and spokesperson with Beyond Nuclear on nuclear reactor hazards and security. He serves as Beyond Nuclear’s regulatory watchdog on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the commercial nuclear power industry. He is a 2008 recipient of the Jane Bagley Lehman Award from the Tides Foundation for environmental activism  on the nuclear power and climate change issue. He has widely appeared in print and electronic media including Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now.” He was a cofounder of the antinuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976 to oppose the construction of the Seabrook (NH) nuclear power plant through public education\, mobilization and non violent direct action that helped launch the U.S. antinuclear movement.
