SUMMARY:Ukraine War: Its End-Game Could End Up in Nuclear War
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker is Prof. Peter Kuznick of American University\, founder of the Nuclear Studies Institute and longtime advocate for nuclear disarmament. He will discuss how the Ukraine War is the most likely international flashpoint that could lead to WWIII between the US/NATO and Russia\, which would probably mean a catastrophic nuclear war. \nNow in its fifth year\, Prof. Kuznick will discuss the growing possibility of a Ukrainian military defeat later this year after Russia mounts an anticipated major offensive this spring or summer. Russian forces not only could push Ukrainian troops entirely out of the eastern region of the Donbas\, but also continue advancing west to the Dnieper River\, effectively occupying half of Ukraine’s territory and threatening major cities like Kharkiv and Odessa. \nThe US/NATO might choose to help Ukraine avoid such a defeat by escalating and sending in EU troops; airpower to set up a no-fly-zone; long-range missiles like the Tomahawk that could reach deep into Russia’s heartland; and drone/missile attacks as they have done in the past two years on Russian strategic early-warning radar systems\, airbases with nuclear-capable bombers\, and even to assassinate Putin in one of his residences near Moscow. These are red lines that Russia has said could lead to the use of nuclear weapons. \nProf. Kuznick will also discuss the very dangerous mistake made by both Biden and Trump to let the START nuclear arms limitation treaty to expire on Feb. 5. To avoid a hugely expensive and even more destabilizing nuclear arms race\, Trump should accept Putin’s offer of a 1-year extension of START while negotiating a new and even more effective treaty. Trump should also save billions of U.S. tax dollars by stopping development of the Golden Dome missile defense program. \nHe will also discuss the greatly exaggerated threat of Russia attacking European countries after it conquers Ukraine. This fear of Russia is driving EU governments to increase military spending and prepare for a major war with Russia by 2030\, while slashing their budgets for human service and environmental priorities. \nPeter Kuznick is Professor of History and founder and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University. A longtime advocate for nuclear disarmament\, he has written extensively about science and politics\, nuclear history\, and Cold War culture. He is the author of Beyond the Laboratory: Scientists as Political Activists in 1930s America (2019); the co-author of Rethinking the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with Akira Kimura; and Rethinking Cold War Culture (2010) with James Gilbert. He and Oliver Stone co-authored the 10 part Showtime documentary film series and book both titled The Untold History of the United States. SUMMARY:4th Anniversary of Ukraine War: End it Now\, or It Could End Up in a Nuclear War!
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ivana Nikolic´ Hughes will discuss the urgent need for a negotiated end to the Ukraine War\, even with significant concessions to the Russians given the increasingly dire military situation facing the Ukrainians.  This would prevent the US or NATO from escalating with new long-range missiles\, troops\, or attacks on Russian shipping and other targets– such as the alleged Ukrainian 90-drone ‘decapitation’ attack in late December on one of Russian President Putin’s homes– to try to avoid a total Ukrainian defeat.   Such escalation could trigger WWIII\, and a catastrophic nuclear war. \nShe will also discuss the increasing danger of nuclear war between the US and Russia because both the Biden and Trump administrations failed to negotiate with Russia to renew the START treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty).  It has been the most effective treaty over the past forty years to limit nuclear weapons.  It expires on Feb. 6th\, and she will discuss the importance of a groundswell of public support for Trump to agree to Putin’s offer to extend the treaty while beginning new negotiations to renew and even expand it. \nDr. Ivana Nikolic´ Hughes is President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Chemistry at Columbia University. She holds a BS with Honors from Caltech\, and a PhD from Stanford University. She has been a faculty member at Columbia University since 2008 and currently serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). SUMMARY:What is Trump’s Golden Dome? Are We Paying for Ineffective Missile Defense and a Spiraling Nuclear Arms Race?
DESCRIPTION:Missile Defense\, as the term implies\, is defending against enemy missiles carrying an explosive payload. The origin of these anti-missile systems dates back to the Cold War space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union\, an era when intercontinental ballistic missiles could be deployed in space to launch satellites to orbit or travel thousands of miles carrying nuclear weapons. Missile defense systems were deployed by both superpowers in the 1960s\, but proved to be technically infeasible and prohibitively expensive. They were ultimately abandoned. \nFeasibility and cost notwithstanding\, the U.S. military and weapons contractors succeeded in pursuing these systems during the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush administrations. Now\, Donald Trump has launched the ambitious Golden Dome project\, yet another missile defense program based on technologies and space-based interceptors proven to be unworkable. \nIn this webinar\, we will hear three experts discuss the technical and policy aspects of Golden Dome. \nTed Postol\, professor emeritus at MIT\, is an internationally known analyst and long-time critic of the missile defense program. He has held positions at the Argonne National Laboratory\, the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment\, and the Pentagon\, where he functioned as scientific advisor to the Chief of Naval Operations and technical and policy advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. At Stanford\, he helped build a weapons technology training program for development and arms control policy. His awards include the 1995 Hilliard Roderick Prize in Science\, Arms Control\, and International Security from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) which lauded him as “by-far the strongest\, technically-trained\, independent arms control analyst of his generation” and the mentor of “a whole generation of independent arms control policy analysts.” He has been awarded for whistle-blowing about governmental false claims about missile defenses like the Patriot system in the 1991 Gulf War. He is a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations\, a board member of The Committee for the Republic\, and a former editor of the journal International Security. \nDaryl Kimball is the Executive Director of the Arms Control Association (ACA)\, Washington\, DC\, where since 2001 he has led the organization’s advocacy campaigns on major issues including cancellation of new nuclear weapons programs\, the 2010 New START agreement\, the 2015 P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran\, the entry into force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty\, and strengthening the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. He is publisher of the organization’s monthly journal\, Arms Control Today\, a frequent expert source for reporters and policymakers\, and has written and spoken extensively about all matters related to nuclear arms control. Previously\, he was the executive director of the Coalition to Reduce Nuclear Dangers\, and the Director of Security Programs for Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). There\, he helped to expose and accelerate the cleanup of a toxic\, Cold War-era nuclear weapons production site in his hometown of Oxford\, Ohio\, led the advocacy for the 1992 nuclear test moratorium in Congress and for the U.N.’s endorsement of the 1996 Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. \nSubrata Ghoshroy\, a former Senior Defense Analyst for the Government Accountability Office (GAO)\, was the lead Technical Evaluator for its investigation into allegations of fraud in the missile defense program. When the GAO tried to cover up his discovery that contractors were lying about a $100-million test\, he blew the whistle and quit the GAO shortly afterwards. He then joined MIT as a Research Affiliate with the Program in Science\, Technology\, and Society. \nLinda Pentz Gunter\, moderator\, is the curator and editor of Beyond Nuclear International and the international specialist at Beyond Nuclear. SUMMARY:Meltdown of Democracy: Bringing Nukes Back Despite Statewide Vote Against Them
DESCRIPTION:The Energy Affordability\, Independence\, and Innovation Act (H.4144) has lots of good things in it. There is at least one big problem with it\, though: the bill’s Section 45 would repeal a citizen-initiated ballot measure – without going back to the voters first. It is in the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities\, and Energy and is being fast-tracked for passage in the fall. \nSection 45 calls for the repeal of a 1982 Act that created democratic control of dangerous nuclear technology. It contains two key things: Before any new nuclear power facilities are built in Massachusetts\, a majority of voters must approve\, AND the vote cannot even be held unless there is an operating\, permanent repository for the radioactive waste that would be generated. There is no permanent repository! The dangerous high-level waste is sitting out in the open at six reactor sites ringing Massachusetts\, including in Plymouth\, Rowe\, and nearby Seabrook and VT Yankee. \nGovernor Healey has chosen to just get rid of the law\, silencing our voices (and the democratic process) She wants to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRS) even though it would be many years before these are practical—and they will be extremely expensive\, still produce toxic nuclear waste\, and include safety and security concerns.  Far better to invest NOW in conservation and sustainable and safer forms of energy! \nPanelists for the webinar are long-time environmental activists who have decades of experience fighting the nuclear industry and the pro-nuclear lobby. During this time he was active in the movement to stop Cruise Missiles with nuclear warheads being deployed in Western Europe. He later toured the States in 1987 as a keyboard player with the Howard Jones band. In the early 90s he was a founder member and fund raiser for the peace group PARC – Pembrokeshire Against the Radar Campaign who successfully fought US military plans to build a massive Over the Horizon Radar installation in a similar location to Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC)\, a proposal originating from President Trump’s US Space Force now in planning. SUMMARY:Boston Hiroshima-Nagasaki 80th Anniversary Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nA coalition of Boston area peace\, justice and environmental organizations are preparing a major event to mark and to build from the 80th anniversaries of the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Boston area events on August 6 will be one of many across the state and around the world urging that nuclear weapons be abolished to help ensure human survival. \nOver the past 80 years\, many Japanese A-bomb survivors have transformed their excruciating physical and emotional traumas into the world’s most powerful force for nuclear weapons abolition\, forging the still very fragile the “nuclear taboo.” Their basic message has been that nuclear weapons and human beings cannot coexist.” For their courageous and inspired campaigning\, they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this past December. \nThose two primitive A-bombs destroyed both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and took the lives of more than 200\,000 Japanese citizens – young and old – almost immediately. Tens of thousands more over time due to radiation exposure. In every country that has since developed nuclear weapons\, including the United States\, citizens have been killed as a result of uranium mining\, nuclear weapons testing\, and the weapons production. \nWe are closer to nuclear war than at any time since the Manhattan Project began developing nuclear weapons. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists have set their Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight – annihilation. Following the pattern of dozens of U.S. preparations and threats to initiate nuclear war during international crises and war\, – most recently in the Iraq Wars – Russian leaders have rattled their nuclear sabers in their war against Ukraine\, and the US recently helped Ukraine attack Russian air bases where nuclear weapons were stored. Earlier this year\, India\, and Pakistan\, each a nuclear power\, brought back to the nuclear abyss in their Kashmir related war.  And two nuclear weapon states\, Israel and the U.S.\, broke another taboo when they attacked the non-weaponized nuclear enrichment facilities of Iran\, a non-nuclear weapon state\, in June of this year. \nThe greatest danger of nuclear war arises from the U.S.-China military confrontation\, especially over Taiwan and in the South China Sea where an accident\, incident or miscalculation could easily escalate to nuclear war. \nTo continue to hold humanity at risk\, the United States is spending approximately $30 billion a year to upgrade its nuclear arsenal and nuclear weapons delivery systems. At a time of massive cutbacks in health\, housing\, education\, foreign aid\, and other essential social services\, this is money that should be used to support people’s lives\, not to threaten human extinctions. \nContrary to the propaganda of the time\, we now know that most senior U.S. military leaders advised that Japan’s surrender could be achieved on terms acceptable to the United States without the A-bombings. And we now know that the A-bombs did not end the war. Japanese leaders opted to surrender on August 8 on learning that the Soviet Union had entered the war. Tragically\, the myth generated by President Truman’s politically motivated lie that the A-bombings saved U.S. lives has served as a legitimating rationale. To preserve that myth\, the history\, quotations\, and images related to the first A-bombings in the Smithsonian Institution’s 50th anniversary Hiroshima-Nagasaki memorial exhibition were excised and only the Enola Gay\, the bomber that dropped the Hiroshima A-bomb\, was displayed. \nThe Boston Hiroshima-Nagasaki coalition has prepared this major event for Dewey Square\, downtown Boston. The event will feature videos and live speeches from Hibakusha (nuclear weapons witness/survivors)\, scientists and leading nuclear disarmament movement leaders from around the world\, film and photographic showings and displays\, and in the Japanese tradition memorial lantern floats. Beyond the educational work that will be central to the commemorative events\, organizers will be urging people across the Commonwealth and beyond to support the Back from the Brink Campaign\, initiated by Physicians for Social Responsibility\, and H.Res. 317\, related legislation initiated by Rep. A few days later\, on August 9th\, the USA dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. These bombs were glorified to be the conclusion of WWII\, and are inhumanely remembered by many Americans as making us saviors. In reality\, Japan was going to surrender from WWII with or without these bombs being used\, and because they were used\, more than 200\,000 people were instantly killed\, with tens of thousands more dying due to related causes in the following years. \nIn this conversation\, we will approach the political\, societal\, and personal aspects of the atomic bomb use in 1945\, the lasting impacts that this decision caused\, and the present day threats of nuclear weapons. This conversation will center on images and stories compiled by Nihon Hidankyo – followed by a full-group discussion on these topics. We hope this dialogue will bring people together to build trust\, educate about the threat of nuclear weapons and war\, and bring confidence in taking action to ensure a secure\, peaceful\, and prospering future for all.

DESCRIPTION:Timmon Wallis will discuss his new book Nuclear Abolition: A Scenario. While Annie Jacobsen based her 2024 bestseller\, Nuclear War: A Scenario on numerous interviews with generals\, Pentagon war planners and other nuclear weapons experts\, Wallis bases his scenario on interviews with peace activists and campaigners from across the country and around the world. And while Jacobsen describes\, second by second\, how a single nuclear weapon could end up destroying civilization over a period of 72 minutes\, Wallis lays out a pathway\, already in progress\, that could move the Doomsday Clock second by second further away from midnight\, leading ultimately to the total elimination of nuclear weapons before it’s too late. \nTimmon Wallis is Executive Director of NuclearBan.US\, based in Northampton\, MA. He was born in Cambridge\, MA\, and returned to his home state in 2017\, after spending most of his life in the UK (plus several years in Belgium\, Sri Lanka\, South Sudan and a number of other countries). Wallis holds a PhD in Peace Studies and has been a nuclear disarmament activist for much of his life. SUMMARY:Day of Action for Weapons and Fossil Fuel Divestment
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, May 20th\, from 12pm to 3:30pm for a day of action at the Massachusetts State House! \nRegister to attend. \n \nThe Massachusetts Public Fund is invested in entities involved with weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and climate risks. The focus of the day will be on two bills\, one divesting pension funds from entities involved with the manufacturing\, producing\, or selling of WMD\, and the other assessing the public fund investments for any climate risks and divesting the fund from those risks. We want the state to move our money away from unethical systems and reinvest in sustainable\, socially-responsible alternatives. \nNo experience is necessary! Trainings and briefings on the priority legislation\, an Act Promoting Responsible Investment (S.767/H.1264)\, and an act to Eliminate Climate Risk Investments (H.2811)\, will be provided. \nTraining sessions will be offered on Thursday\, May 15th at 7pm ET and Monday May 19th at 7pm ET. Linda Pentz Gunter of Beyond Nuclear will moderate. \nM.V. Ramana is the Simons Chair in Disarmament\, Global and Human Security and Professor at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs\, University of British Columbia\, Vancouver\, Canada. Ramana is the author of “The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India” (Penguin Books\, 2012)\, co?editor of “Prisoners of the Nuclear Dream” (Orient Longman\, 2003) and the author of “Nuclear is not the Solution: The Folly of Atomic Power in the Age of Climate Change” (Verso books\, 2024). He is a member of the International Panel on Fissile Materials (IPFM)\, the International Nuclear Risk Assessment Group (INRAG)\, the Canadian Pugwash Group\, and the team that produces the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Leo Szilard Award from the American Physical Society. \nPaul Gunter is a longtime environmental activist\,  energy policy analyst and spokesperson with Beyond Nuclear on nuclear reactor hazards and security. He serves as Beyond Nuclear’s regulatory watchdog on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the commercial nuclear power industry. He is a 2008 recipient of the Jane Bagley Lehman Award from the Tides Foundation for environmental activism  on the nuclear power and climate change issue. He has widely appeared in print and electronic media including Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now.” He was a cofounder of the antinuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976 to oppose the construction of the Seabrook (NH) nuclear power plant through public education\, mobilization and non violent direct action that helped launch the U.S. antinuclear movement. DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nIn the last five years\, nuclear tensions between the U.S. and China have accelerated dramatically driven by a series of factors\, including the severe deterioration of cross-Strait relations. This presentation will summarize thinking on both sides of the Pacific regarding the current state of this nuclear rivalry and its relationship to the Taiwan issue. Prof. Goldstein will also answer questions about his Asia trip during the winter holiday that took him to northeast China\, Kazakhstan\, the Philippines\, and also South Korea. \nLyle J. Goldstein is the Director of the China Initiative and Visiting Professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University.
