SUMMARY:Burlington Bastion of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Via Mass 50501: \nWe are a Bastion of Democracy!\nThe constitution is as powerful as the number of voices willing to speak out to uphold it. \nJoin us on Saturday\, October 11th for a peaceful standout from 5am-7pm in front of the Burlington ICE facility. \nOn October 11th\, Americans from all walks of life will come together in Burlington to stand in joy\, resolution\, and solidarity outside the Burlington ICE facility to support and defend the constitution of the United States. We will start gathering at 5am and we will remain until 7pm. Some courageous attendees will be there the whole time\, and many more will come and go as they are able. \nEach attendee will have the option to recite the civil servant oath of office as a form of dedication to their personal role in this standout. Come with your songs\, your spirit\, and your unbending will to speak out on behalf of our constitution. Together we will be an unshakeable voice saying in unison that we will not abandon our shared ideals. Together we will be a bastion of democracy. \nWe ride at dawn! \nJoin Mass 50501 and their coalition partners in a peaceful standout. Bring water\, snacks\, a chair if you’d like one\, and anything else you may need to stand outside for an extended period of time. SUMMARY:Defend the Guard
DESCRIPTION:S.2471/H.3829 upholds the framework of the U.S. Constitution by ensuring that the Massachusetts National Guard is only called upon for active federal military service when there has been an official declaration of war by Congress\, as required by Article I\, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. Its purpose is to require a shift in American foreign policy and curtail the federal government’s ability to wage endless war without congressional oversight or accountability. Defend the Guard would have no effect on either deployments to other states in the union or overseas training missions.  \nThe hearing for this bill will take place on Tuesday\, September 16th in front of the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs. The hearing will be at the Massachusetts State House in room A-1 from 1-5pm. Please join us in testifying in favor of this bill to uphold the U.S. Constitution. \nRegister below by 12pm on Monday September\, 15. You may testify in person or virtually.

SUMMARY:Courage and Resistance – Day of Action in Solidarity with Immigrant Communities
DESCRIPTION:There’s been a lot of “bad news” since January 20th. \nIn better news this week: Chelsea and Somerville filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s efforts to coerce them into participating in mass deportation efforts. Represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights\, the Cities assert that the Administration’s heavy-handed tactics—threatening to strip sanctuary cities of federal funding and prosecute them for failing to bend to the President’s will—violate their Constitutional rights. Read more \nAlso in better news\, a federal judge blocked immigration enforcement at some houses of worship. The preliminary injunction only applies to the plaintiffs’ houses of worship: Quaker\, Baptist\, and Sikh. \nThese examples highlight how important it is right now for faith-based organizations\, non-profits\, local government and individuals to remain steadfast and not hesitate to challenge the attacks on our communities and our rights that just keep on coming from the new administration. Rather than allowing ourselves to feel overwhelmed\, or letting the absolutely ridiculous and obviously unconstitutional nature of these attacks lull us into a false sense of security (“they can’t really do that\, can they?”) we must ALL rise to the occasion. RIGHT NOW. \nThey also demonstrate that not only do we have the power to fight – WE CAN WIN. Bravo to these municipalities and faith groups\, for recognizing their responsibility to the people they represent\, for refusing to capitulate the way so many corporations have been doing\, seemingly at the slightest encouragement. \nAnother example of bravery and commitment to the values we hold dear is Boston’s own Mayor Wu. As a result of her progressive track record and public refusal to sacrifice her responsibility as a steward of the city of Boston and a representative of the people of Boston\, Mayor Wu has been targeted\, insulted and threatened by the Trump administration\, most notably by the “border czar” Tom Homan. \nMayor Wu has been called before Congress to testify on Boston’s Trust Act and the moves the city has made to separate itself from the enforcement of federal civil laws. The Mayor has agreed to testify and she has responded publicly by saying in part\, “From the beginning\, it’s clear that Boston’s progress may seem threatening to some. We are a community here that prioritizes investing in every generation\, being welcoming\, inclusive\, and then having the receipts and the results to show that that is a way of serving everyone even better.” \nAs Mayor Wu gets prepared to testify and provide a strong defense of the way we do things here in Boston\, MIRA is asking members of our community to thank Mayor Wu for standing up for our shared values.  \nJoin us March 5 11am to 1pm in front of City Hall to demonstrate our support for Mayor Wu\, and to show that Boston and all of MA is indeed a community of people who have the courage to welcome.
