SUMMARY:Justice 4 All Thursdays
DESCRIPTION:Via Turn Purple 2 Blue:\n\nGreater Assabet Indivisible Network (GAIN) invites you to stand in solidarity with immigrants and resistance to ICE and their cruel and lawless detention of our neighbors Thursdays from 11am-1pm. Regardless of any other political views\, you are welcome to join us and demand Justice 4 All so long as you do so non-violently. \nOur friends at Bearing Witness have been hosting gatherings at this location for many weeks. We are an unaffiliated group\, but very much aligned with their values and mission. Our goal is to add to the total number of hours that citizens stand in non-violent opposition to the deplorable detainment conditions at this location. If you have been to Bearing Witness on Wednesdays\, we would love to have you at Justice 4 All Thursdays. \nSchedule (Starting Thursday\, September 4 – more dates to follow) \n11:00-11:30 Welcome; music; announcements\n11:30-12:30 Stand with signs along District Ave\n12:30-1:00 Optional short march down to Mall Rd. \nWhat happens at this ICE office? \nICE personnel depart from District Ave. in unmarked vans with tinted windows on missions to abduct immigrants across New England. Immigrants may also show up at the office for appointments. The facility on District Ave was never intended to be a detention center\, yet immigration lawyers and media interviews reveal that people are now being housed here in conditions that have been called “abysmal” and “unsanitary.” \nWhat to expect at Justice 4 All? \nWe are committed to nonviolence\, and we stand peacefully with signs outside the facility. We do not block the entrance\, we do not physically approach ICE agents as they walk to/from the parking lot\, and we do not block traffic on District Ave. \nSigns \nThis is a very targeted action outside the ICE facility\, so it’s not the venue for protesting other causes. Even though we care deeply about other issues\, while outside ICE we must remain focused on immigration.  \nParking and other tips \nFor parking\, please use the Macy’s overflow lot (75 Burlington Mall Road\, follow signs for Macy’s\, see map). For those with mobility challenges\, please keep in mind that the lots closest to ICE — the FAA lot beside ICE and the BAE Systems lot directly across the street from ICE — have both been blocked off. There are restaurants nearby (Clover\, Pressed Cafe\, Chipotle) to get food and use the bathroom. Before arriving\, please consider your own self-preservation (citizenship status) and self-care (sunscreen\, hydration\, etc.)

SUMMARY:Cuba After Castro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a unique opportunity to learn about what really is happening in Cuba and just who the top leader of the country is.   Massachusetts Peace Action is holding an exclusive showing of the film\, “Cuba After Castro”\, to be followed by a discussion facilitated by me\, Merri Ansara\, just returned from many months in Cuba.   \nMonths before NBC and Kristen Welker made popular headlines with their interview with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canal\, Abby Martin and Matt Belen with Breakthrough News made their nterview with President Diaz-Canal\,  an indepth view beyond trite headlines and questions like “will you step down\,” revealing more fully who he actually is and represents and what actually is going on in Cuba.   \nThe first leader of Cuba born after the Cuban Revolution\, President Diaz-Canal came into office confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions\, a media war\, a devastating pandemic\, and historic domestic protests. Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.  \nMiguel Diaz-Canal was nominated by and succeeds Raul Castro\, last of the Castros to hold power in Cuba. Now Raul Castro has been indicted by the United States for a fatal incident in 1996 when 2 American planes piloted by Cuban Americans from Miami\, flew right into Cuban airspace despite many warnings to the U.S. from Cuba. \nBased on the indictment of Raul Castro\, reminiscent of the kidnapping of Venezuela’s President Maduro\, the United States is threatening to invade Cuba\, making it more of an imperative than ever to understand what is happening in Cuba\, and just who the President of this country is. \nJoin us for the film and for a discussion at Mass Peace Action in Cambridge May 29\, 7:00 pm.. Sign up to attend.

SUMMARY:Cuba after Castro
DESCRIPTION:Cuba in the Valley Film Series \nNBC and Kristen Welker made popular headlines with their interview of Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canal Bermudez and cynical questions such as “will you step down”\, also claiming their interview was “first” and “exclusive”. \nBut just days before Welker and NBC came  Abby Martin\, Matt Belen and Breakthrough News with an interview with Pres Diaz-Canal revealing who he actually is and represents and what actually is going on in Cuba. \nThe film chronicles Diaz-Canel’s formation as the first and to some an unexpected successor to the Castros — an unassuming organizer molded by the revolutionary process\, the first leader born after the Cuban Revolution. Confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions\, a media war\, a devastating pandemic\, and historic domestic protests. Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.  \nThrough his eyes and words we see a vision of revolutionary Cuba that you don’t get in the US press: a nation of collective values and defiance in the face of constant threats from the United States.  \nSponsored by Easthampton Public Library\, cosponsored by MAPA

SUMMARY:Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up
DESCRIPTION:Boats of armed Cuban Americans trying to land in Cuba like a little Bay of Piglets.  Trump cutting off all oil and threatening military action “I can do anything I want with the Island”.  Threatening countries in the Caribbean with who knows what if they use Cuba’s medical services.  And calling Cuba a terrorist and hostile country. Who’s the terrorist?\n\nThe inimitable Saul Landau with his partner Danny Glover\, take on the question in this 1 hour film:  Will the Real Terrorist Stand Up.  Then we will have a discussion — including a report back on the Nuestra America Convoy that just went to Cuba from 36 countries with some 500 people\, including 150 people from the US\, and several tons of medical aid delivered to hospitals and clinics.  Hope you can come.  And please take this action to tell Congress to pass this resolution forbidding Trump to take military action without consulting Congress.

SUMMARY:End Trump's Oil blockade of Cuba
DESCRIPTION:A call for help tabling and petition gathering for Cuba this Saturday at noon at Park street station \nThis Saturday the international flotilla in solidarity with Cuba arrives for a big solidarity action in Havana. (They are delivering a significant amount of aid as well) Some of us are hoping to have an event in Boston in solidarity with those events in Cuba. Would you be available for a tabling/standout/leafleting event at Boston Common at noon. We hope to have at least a handful of people collecting signatures on our petition calling for an end to Trump’s oil blockade which has cast the island into darkness some or all of the time and is causing great harm to Cuba’s people. \nOf course there is so much going on. but some of us thought that a Cuba solidarity action at this time when Trump is determined to overthrow Cuba’s government is very much in order and when a big solidarity action is taking place in Cuba itself. Please join us on Saturday at noon. If you have any questions call Paul Shannon at 617-623-5288 and leave a message.

SUMMARY:Stop Trump’s Oil Blockade of Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Rally on Saturday\, February 14\nOutside Park Street Station\, Boston\n12 Noon to 1:15pm\nThis rally takes place during the worst crisis Cuba has ever faced as Trump is making sure no oil can reach Cuba. On January 29 he signed an executive order declaring a national emergency because of the alleged imminent threat that Cuba poses to our national security!! (The president seems to get a kick out of making up the most outrageous stories possible). In response to this “threat” he is placing significant tariffs on all goods from any country who dares to sell Cuba oil. \nOnce implemented this oil blockade means Cuba would be out of fuel by the end of this month. We will also raise our voices against even more draconian attacks on Cuba that could be coming soon. \nNow that Venezuelan oil is no longer available to Cuba\, we must support the efforts of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to find a way to sell some of its oil to the island nation. Cuba. As she says\, “The problem we have now is that the United States said it will impose tariffs on any country that sells to Cuba” \nGiven the energy shortages that already exist in Cuba and the hardship primarily caused by 6 decades of embargo\, such an oil blockade guarantees starvation and widespread loss of life in Cuba. Electricity\, hospitals\, agricultural machinery and transportation will no longer be able to function. The president’s strategy is clear: to provoke a level of misery so profound that it leads to civil unrest and the toppling of the Cuban Government. \nBut this blockade of Cuban oil does not take place in a vacuum. By now it is clear that president Trump will do whatever he wants to get his way. He will destroy people\, universities\, cultural institutions and countries to further his ambitions for power and personal wealth. He wages war abroad and war against our rights at home with the same playbook of division\, extortion\, deprivation\, and fear. The people of Minneapolis and the people of Cuba may have more in common than they know – united as they are by a common enemy and a common vision of human solidarity. \nCuba may be Trump’s enemy. But it is not ours. Join us at noon on Valentines Day outside Park Street Station in downtown Boston to let the world know this basic reality. \nSponsored by the statewide “No War on Venezuela Network” and Massachusetts Peace Action \nFor Information call 617-354-2169

SUMMARY:US Aggression towards Venezuela and its Repercussions for Latin America (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Wedenesday January 14th @ 8PM\n \nThe recent U.S. military attacks and threats on Venezuela are just its latest acts of war on its southern neighbor. Since the rise of Hugo Chavez\, there have been coup attempts\, sanctions\, subversive support of the right-wing opposition\, theft of financial assets\, and the widespread dissemination of lies and propaganda portraying Venezuela as a threat to the U.S. But now\, the Trump regime appears more determined than ever to bring about regime change in this country that has the largest proven reserves of oil in the world. \nThe danger of this U.S aggression is not just to the people of Venezuela\, but to the rest of Latin America as well\, especially to the targeted nations of Cuba\, Nicaragua\, and Colombia. The U.S.\, under the banner of the Monroe Doctrine\, considers all of Latin America its sphere of influence and means to reinvigorate its dominance and exploitation of natural resources there. Capturing Venezuela would be a jewel in the imperial crown\, but it would also inevitably lead to more and more neo-colonization throughout the hemisphere. \n \nSpeakers: \nJohn Perry\, based in Nicaragua\, is with the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition and writes for the Grayzone\, London Review of Books\, FAIR\, Covert Action and elsewhere \nRoger Harris taught political science at a Historically Black College in Mississippi in the late 1960s and was involved in the civil rights movement and community organizing in East Harlem\, New York City. He is a co-founder of the Venezuela Solidarity Network and was an election accompanier for the last presidential election in Venezuela. Roger is on the state central committee of the California Peace and Freedom Party and on the board of the human rights organization\, the Task Force on the Americas. He is on the program committee of the Marxist Forum and on the secretariat of the US Peace Council. He is active in the SanctionsKill campaign and the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition. His political writings may be regularly found at Counterpunch\, LA Progressive\, Antiwar.com\, Venezuelanalysis\, and the Orinoco Tribune.

SUMMARY:Stop Trump’s Blockade of Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 20th @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nJoin us Saturday\, December 20\, at 1:00 PM at Park Street Station to rally\nagainst war.\nOn Tuesday President Trump proclaimed “I am ordering a Total and Complete Blockade of all sanctioned Oil Tankers going into and out of Venezuela…Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada every assembled in the history of South America. It will only get bigger\, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before.” \nThe Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court clearly defines “the blockade of the ports or coasts of a State by the armed forces of another State” as an act of aggression. This proclamation is an act of war. In response Venezuela’s government ordered its navy to escort tankers from port\, escalating the risk of confrontation (Boston Globe Dec. 18). \nThis blockade is only the latest U.S. provocation that includes murdering 95 civilians in boats off South America’s coast (Deliberately killing 2 survivors of these attacks while in the water); declaring a No Fly Zone over all Venezuelan airspace; and last week seizing an oil tanker carrying Venezuelan oil on the high seas. President Trump has told us that these attacks are only the beginning. \nThese provocations are backed up by a vast war armada\, equipped with the most modern missiles and bombers\, sitting off Venezuela’s coast\, In addition 15\,000 U.S. soldiers on those ships and in Puerto Rico are ready to invade at a moment’s notice. \nWith the situation getting more dangerous by the day\, the goal of the rally is to call on everyone to do what they can to prevent war. \nJoin us to Demand: \n\nAn immediate end to the Blockade of Venezuela’s ports\nEnding Trump’s piracy of oil tankers on the high seas.\nStopping all executions of civilians in small boats off the coast of South America\n\nAnd most important\, withdraw all the U.S. warships and weapons from the coast of Venezuela and bring our sailors\, airmen and marines home for the holidays where they belong.

Director Rolando says:  “In the struggle of the African American people\, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice\, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles.” This is the voice\, she says\, of Assata Shakur.  Who was Assata?  How did she come to be in Cuba?  Why did she choose Cuba?  And why did the United States place her as a focal point in their demands for normalizing relations with Cuba and punish Cuba for not surrendering her? How is it that Assata became such a legend\, in the US and in Cuba? In Eyes of the Rainbow\, the film interweaves Assata’s story with her spiritual connection to the Yoruba Orisha Oya\, an Afro-Cuban goddess\, underlining the importance of culture and religion as well as politics in the African Diaspora and liberation struggle. The film is primarily in English\, subtitled when in Spanish\, and still incredibly relevant to the U.S. and Cuba of today.  \nAgustin Lao-Montes\, professor in the W.E.B. DuBois African American Studies Department at UMass Amherst and noted activist and scholar in the Afrodescendent movements of the U.S.\, Cuba and the Caribbean will lead a post film discussion bringing these connections together.

SUMMARY:The US and El Salvador: Parallels on Political Persecution and Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 8th\, 7pm EST\n \nPresidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety\, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is\, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process. \nJoin Lourdes Palacios\, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador\, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families. \nHear from Mneesha Gellman\, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative\, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing families of prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities. \nWe will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action\, beginning September 15th\, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved! \nWe won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes\, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish.
