SUMMARY:US Aggression towards Venezuela and its Repercussions for Latin America (a WIRN webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Wedenesday January 14th @ 8PM\n \nThe recent U.S. military attacks and threats on Venezuela are just its latest acts of war on its southern neighbor. Since the rise of Hugo Chavez\, there have been coup attempts\, sanctions\, subversive support of the right-wing opposition\, theft of financial assets\, and the widespread dissemination of lies and propaganda portraying Venezuela as a threat to the U.S. But now\, the Trump regime appears more determined than ever to bring about regime change in this country that has the largest proven reserves of oil in the world. \nThe danger of this U.S aggression is not just to the people of Venezuela\, but to the rest of Latin America as well\, especially to the targeted nations of Cuba\, Nicaragua\, and Colombia. The U.S.\, under the banner of the Monroe Doctrine\, considers all of Latin America its sphere of influence and means to reinvigorate its dominance and exploitation of natural resources there. Capturing Venezuela would be a jewel in the imperial crown\, but it would also inevitably lead to more and more neo-colonization throughout the hemisphere. \n \nSpeakers: \nJohn Perry\, based in Nicaragua\, is with the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition and writes for the Grayzone\, London Review of Books\, FAIR\, Covert Action and elsewhere \nRoger Harris taught political science at a Historically Black College in Mississippi in the late 1960s and was involved in the civil rights movement and community organizing in East Harlem\, New York City. He is a co-founder of the Venezuela Solidarity Network and was an election accompanier for the last presidential election in Venezuela. Roger is on the state central committee of the California Peace and Freedom Party and on the board of the human rights organization\, the Task Force on the Americas. He is on the program committee of the Marxist Forum and on the secretariat of the US Peace Council. He is active in the SanctionsKill campaign and the Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition. His political writings may be regularly found at Counterpunch\, LA Progressive\, Antiwar.com\, Venezuelanalysis\, and the Orinoco Tribune.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 3rd @ 3pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nNorthampton Town Hall\nHolyoke Veterans Memorial Park\nPresident Trump’s illegal acts of war against Venezuela are a violation of US\, military\, and international law. The United States has been engaged in a carefully orchestrated series of ever-increasing provocations against Venezuela culminating in the bombing of Caracas and the abduction of the Venezuelan president and his wife. \nThe US government started with attacks on small fishing boats and murdered the survivors of the attacks. It went farther\, seizing an oil tanker and bringing it to a US port\, planning to steal the oil.  The Trump administration has now unilaterally launched a regime change war against Venezuela \nWe Demand: \n\nNo to Regime Change\nNo to Decapitation\nNo to Military Attack\nBring our Forces Home\nGet the CIA out of Venezuela\n\nJoin us Saturday\, January 3rd\, at 3:00 PM at Park Street Station\, Northampton Town Hall\, and Holyoke’s Veterans Memorial Park to rally against war. \nThis is urgent. SUMMARY:Stop Trump’s Blockade of Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, December 20th @ 1pm\nOutside Park Street station in Boston\nJoin us Saturday\, December 20\, at 1:00 PM at Park Street Station to rally\nagainst war.\nOn Tuesday President Trump proclaimed “I am ordering a Total and Complete Blockade of all sanctioned Oil Tankers going into and out of Venezuela…Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada every assembled in the history of South America. It will only get bigger\, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before.” \nThe Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court clearly defines “the blockade of the ports or coasts of a State by the armed forces of another State” as an act of aggression. This proclamation is an act of war. In response Venezuela’s government ordered its navy to escort tankers from port\, escalating the risk of confrontation (Boston Globe Dec. 18). \nThis blockade is only the latest U.S. provocation that includes murdering 95 civilians in boats off South America’s coast (Deliberately killing 2 survivors of these attacks while in the water); declaring a No Fly Zone over all Venezuelan airspace; and last week seizing an oil tanker carrying Venezuelan oil on the high seas. President Trump has told us that these attacks are only the beginning. \nThese provocations are backed up by a vast war armada\, equipped with the most modern missiles and bombers\, sitting off Venezuela’s coast\, In addition 15\,000 U.S. soldiers on those ships and in Puerto Rico are ready to invade at a moment’s notice. \nWith the situation getting more dangerous by the day\, the goal of the rally is to call on everyone to do what they can to prevent war. \nJoin us to Demand: \n\nAn immediate end to the Blockade of Venezuela’s ports\nEnding Trump’s piracy of oil tankers on the high seas.\nStopping all executions of civilians in small boats off the coast of South America\n\nAnd most important\, withdraw all the U.S. warships and weapons from the coast of Venezuela and bring our sailors\, airmen and marines home for the holidays where they belong.

SUMMARY:Eyes of the Rainbow: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Monday\, Nov. 3\, 5:45 pm\, at the Easthampton Library Annex\, 52 Main Street for the 2nd installment in our monthly film & discussion series\, Cuba in the Valley. This month’s film is Eyes of the Rainbow\, a documentary by noted Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando about the life of Assata Shakur\, the Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader\, who escaped prison\, proclaiming her innocence\, and then spent the rest of her life in Cuba. She died in September 2025. The film takes place in 1997\, when she had been in exile in Cuba for 15 years. Director Rolando says:  “In the struggle of the African American people\, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice\, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles.” This is the voice\, she says\, of Assata Shakur.  Who was Assata?  How did she come to be in Cuba?  Why did she choose Cuba?  And why did the United States place her as a focal point in their demands for normalizing relations with Cuba and punish Cuba for not surrendering her? How is it that Assata became such a legend\, in the US and in Cuba? In Eyes of the Rainbow\, the film interweaves Assata’s story with her spiritual connection to the Yoruba Orisha Oya\, an Afro-Cuban goddess\, underlining the importance of culture and religion as well as politics in the African Diaspora and liberation struggle. The film is primarily in English\, subtitled when in Spanish\, and still incredibly relevant to the U.S. and Cuba of today.  \nAgustin Lao-Montes\, professor in the W.E.B. DuBois African American Studies Department at UMass Amherst and noted activist and scholar in the Afrodescendent movements of the U.S.\, Cuba and the Caribbean will lead a post film discussion bringing these connections together.

SUMMARY:The US and El Salvador: Parallels on Political Persecution and Mass Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 8th\, 7pm EST\n \nPresidents Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele are running parallel authoritarian projects that use national security to justify human rights abuses via mass incarceration. Platforms like MAGA and Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party cloak their abuses of power as concern for public safety\, scapegoating immigrants or weaponizing fears of gang violence to further their agendas. The truth is\, facilities like Alligator Alcatraz in Florida and CECOT in El Salvador don’t exist to protect the public — they seek to terrorize marginalized communities and set a precedent for indefinite detention with no hope of due process. \nJoin Lourdes Palacios\, a popular movement leader and former senior government official in El Salvador\, in discussing her work to free political prisoners and support their families. \nHear from Mneesha Gellman\, associate professor and director of the Emerson Prison Initiative\, who recently visited El Salvador and spent time interviewing families of prisoners at CECOT and other Salvadorian facilities. \nWe will also learn from our cosponsor CISPES (The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) who will share details about their upcoming week of action\, beginning September 15th\, providing us with specific ways that the audience can get involved! \nWe won’t stand by as civilians permanently disappear into state-sanctioned prison camps. Learn about the connections between U.S. and Salvadoran carceral regimes\, and how you can take action. Live interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:Mexico's 4th Transformation: Sweeping the Americas
DESCRIPTION:Mexico is unique in the world with its constitutional judicial reform allowing popular elections for all major branches of government. \nIt’s growth and “Mexico Plan” under “The Fourth Transformation” are aimed at sovereignty and economic power and social well being. The US makes constant attempts to control Mexico’s growth path as goes US Monroe Doctrine history\, and wants to block its growing relationships and leadership in Latin America especially with Cuba and recently with Brics\, which Mexico has joined. \n \nAlong with being the major trading partner of USA\, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and her government are trying to retain good policies with both differing economic models. This webinar will explain the Judicial Reform and Mexico’s struggle for total sovereignty\, including a young citizen’s experience\, background and views of present day infrastructure changes; how she and colleagues view the noticeable developments and social changes; how the “Bienestar” (Well Being) program affects her family and neighbors. She will also talk about positive developments in Mexico City. \n \nSpeakers: \nDr. Leni Villagomez Reeves – Former United Farm Workers volunteer who attended UC Berkeley and UCSF. She worked at Valley Childrens Hospital in pediatric emergency medicine. She is active in Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom\, where she co-chairs its national Cuba and the Bolivarian Alliance Committee\, and with the Pastors for Peace Friendship Caravan to Cuba and Saving Lives Campaign. \nRegina Hugues lives in Mexico City experiencing the changes with differing opinions from friends\, family and colleagues. Studied Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development at Anahuac University in Mexico City. Works over 7 years as a Spanish teacher with adults of all ages and professions. Volunteered in Oaxaca. and worked in the Mexican government offices and private sector. \n

SUMMARY:Courage and Resistance – Day of Action in Solidarity with Immigrant Communities
DESCRIPTION:There’s been a lot of “bad news” since January 20th. \nIn better news this week: Chelsea and Somerville filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s efforts to coerce them into participating in mass deportation efforts. Represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights\, the Cities assert that the Administration’s heavy-handed tactics—threatening to strip sanctuary cities of federal funding and prosecute them for failing to bend to the President’s will—violate their Constitutional rights. Read more \nAlso in better news\, a federal judge blocked immigration enforcement at some houses of worship. The preliminary injunction only applies to the plaintiffs’ houses of worship: Quaker\, Baptist\, and Sikh. \nThese examples highlight how important it is right now for faith-based organizations\, non-profits\, local government and individuals to remain steadfast and not hesitate to challenge the attacks on our communities and our rights that just keep on coming from the new administration. Rather than allowing ourselves to feel overwhelmed\, or letting the absolutely ridiculous and obviously unconstitutional nature of these attacks lull us into a false sense of security (“they can’t really do that\, can they?”) we must ALL rise to the occasion. RIGHT NOW. \nThey also demonstrate that not only do we have the power to fight – WE CAN WIN. Bravo to these municipalities and faith groups\, for recognizing their responsibility to the people they represent\, for refusing to capitulate the way so many corporations have been doing\, seemingly at the slightest encouragement. \nAnother example of bravery and commitment to the values we hold dear is Boston’s own Mayor Wu. As a result of her progressive track record and public refusal to sacrifice her responsibility as a steward of the city of Boston and a representative of the people of Boston\, Mayor Wu has been targeted\, insulted and threatened by the Trump administration\, most notably by the “border czar” Tom Homan. \nMayor Wu has been called before Congress to testify on Boston’s Trust Act and the moves the city has made to separate itself from the enforcement of federal civil laws. The Mayor has agreed to testify and she has responded publicly by saying in part\, “From the beginning\, it’s clear that Boston’s progress may seem threatening to some. We are a community here that prioritizes investing in every generation\, being welcoming\, inclusive\, and then having the receipts and the results to show that that is a way of serving everyone even better.” \nAs Mayor Wu gets prepared to testify and provide a strong defense of the way we do things here in Boston\, MIRA is asking members of our community to thank Mayor Wu for standing up for our shared values.  \nJoin us March 5 11am to 1pm in front of City Hall to demonstrate our support for Mayor Wu\, and to show that Boston and all of MA is indeed a community of people who have the courage to welcome.
