The Boston Musical Intelligencer describes them as offering “new directions in pianism” and exploring the “far reaches of musical possibilities.” They aspire not merely to stake a claim but to reshape the landscape\, push boundaries\, and redefine possibilities within the realm of two-piano as well as four-hand repertoire. \nRecently\, Psychopomp Ensemble appeared on The Kamerman Piano Series at the University of West Florida and at Puddingstone Events in Rhode Island. Additionally\, Psychopomp’s past performance highlights include concerts presented by UCLA\, the Chinese American Museum (LA)\, the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra\, Scripps College\, Ukraine Forward\, the College Music Society\, the Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts\, the Lancaster Piano Festival\, and the German Society of Pennsylvania. In 2021\, Psychopomp Ensemble participated in interdisciplinary events in Los Angeles\, which garnered coverage from more than a dozen media outlets\, including The LA Times\, NBC News\, Shanghai Morning Post\, Qilu Evening News\, and others. \nChi-Wei Lo is a pianist\, improviser\, and arranger whose performances utilize a plethora of musical languages. As a co-founder of the Psychopomp Ensemble\, Lo has continually pushed boundaries\, blending interdisciplinary art forms with both traditional and avant-garde musical elements to create compelling concert experiences. \nWith a career spanning diverse platforms\, Lo has been presented by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra\, North American Medical Orchestra\, The Lancaster Piano Festival\, College Music Society\, UCLA\, Lilypad\, Chamber Music Charlestown\, The Harvard Musical Association\, The Chinese American Museum (LA)\, Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts\, Caroga Arts Collective\, New Asia Chamber Music Society\, the German Society of Pennsylvania\, and the Counterpoint Ensemble (Taiwan)\, among many others. \nLo holds a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and a Master of Music (M.M.) in piano performance from The Juilliard School. He is expected to complete his Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Contemporary Musical Arts (formerly Contemporary Improvisation) at the New England Conservatory this year. Currently\, Lo shapes the next generation of musicians as an Assistant Professor of Composition at Berklee College of Music and a Theory Instructor at the New England Conservatory. During the summer\, he teaches improvisation classes and piano at The Lancaster Piano Festival\, where he delivers all pre-concert talks\, sharing his expertise and passion for music with festival attendees. \nHailed by The Boston Globe as “a world-class pianist\,” Xiaopei Xu has captivated audiences worldwide with her “spellbinding and expressive”performances (BMInt). She made her Boston Symphony Hall concerto debut with Boston Pops in 2018\, and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in venues across three continents. \nXu’s recent performances have been presented by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra\, Harvard Musical Association\, Foundation for the Chinese Performing Arts\, The Stecher and Horowitz Foundation\, German Society of Pennsylvania\, Lancaster International Piano Festival\, Chinese American Museum(LA)\, Ukraine Forward\, College Music Society… etc. \nXu holds her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University\, Master’s degree from Yale University and Bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. She has also worked with influential musicians such as Claude Frank\, Richard Goode\, and Paul Badura-Skoda.

SUMMARY:Dance for World Community Conference
DESCRIPTION:Conference Registration is now open!\nJune 5-8\, 2025\nHarvard Square\, Cambridge MA\n \nConcern about climate change and its disproportionate impact on under-resourced or otherwise disadvantaged communities continues to grow. After decades of persistent advocacy and activism to advance social and environmental justice\, recent destabilizing orders from top US government officials are brazenly countermanding advances in climate science\, public health\, education\, diversity\, inclusion\, equity and other areas. It is no wonder why\, in today’s environment\, independent artists and arts organizations are looking to expand their role as advocates and activists\, to support creative and rational solutions to the critical global issues that ultimately affect us all. \nFrom the muralist who mobilizes an entire community to paint uplifting images in a depressed urban space\, to the composer who writes a symphony to evince the destruction that humanity is inflicting on the planet’s ecological systems\, artists of all media and forms continue to respond to the urgencies of our age. \n \nDance for World Community\, initiated in 2009 by a ballet organization in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, proposes that dance is particularly well suited to effective advocacy and activism. Inherently social\, dance is universally understandable\, has great potential to bring diverse people together across cultural divides and can quickly build trust and community cohesion. \nPowerful as it is\, dance is one of the most under-resourced sectors in America and is underrepresented in many institutional settings. In spite of the steady increases in the number of training and performance centers\, established schools and companies are notoriously insular and inward-looking. The sector lacks the inclusive\, unified voice it needs to respond to the challenges that now all the arts and other industries are facing in 2025. \n \nHow will we as dancers — performers\, instructors\, choreographers\, administrators\, scholars\, independent dance artists and aficionados — respond to the critical social and environmental crises that can no longer be ignored by any of us? \nIn this conference\, we will examine different initiatives and models\, exchange ideas and begin to build the necessary networks to strengthen our efforts to make a difference. Through this shared process\, we will rouse the advocate and activist in each of us.

SUMMARY:Warning! Graphic Content!
DESCRIPTION:An event with award-winning cartoonist Dwayne Booth.\n  \n \nWhat is the future of political cartooning\, protest art\, and visual satire? How can pictures rendered in celebration of the precious vulnerability of the human experience make crystal clear the toxic barbarity of the military and retail industrial complexes\, both built on the hideous notion that the commodification of people everywhere and the willful disenfranchisement of their natural inclination towards peace\, love\, and understanding is better for business – better business being predatory capitalism and capitulation to hierarchy? What can be done to assert the importance and indispensability of the artist’s unique role in a free society as both a witness and predictor and\, in some circumstances\, instigator of all the comedy and tragedy that motivates our politics\, shapes our cultural identities\, and informs\, for better or worse\, the internal voice that shames\, praises\, and confounds our tenuous relationship with truth\, beauty\, and treachery every moment of everyday? \nMr. Fish \nDwayne Booth has been a freelance writer and cartoonist for twenty-five years\, publishing under both his real name and the pen name of Mr. Fish with many of the nation’s most reputable and prestigious magazines\, journals and newspapers.  His work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine\, the Los Angeles Times\, the Village Voice\, the LA Weekly\, the Atlantic\, The Nation\, Vanity Fair\, Mother Jones\, the Advocate\, Slate\, Truthdig\, ScheerPost\, and The Chris Hedges Report.  He has also published with Information for Social Change (British journal)\, Internazionale (Italian magazine)\, and Umanita Nova (Italian newspaper). \nHis awards include the Los Angeles Press Club for editorial cartooning\, the Grambs Aronson Award for Cartooning with a Conscience and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Editorial Cartooning.  He has curated exhibits exploring the history of political cartooning for the University of Southern California\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the University of Connecticut. \n \nRegister for this event \n \nBooth’s most recent book is Nobody Left: Conversations with Famous Radicals\, Progressives and Cultural Icons About the End of Dissent\, Revolution and Liberalism in America\, Fantagraphics Books. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wajib
DESCRIPTION:To launch our Palestine film series\, we present Wajib (2017).  The film offers a rare\, intimate\, and authentic glimpse into the everyday lives of middle-class Palestinians in Nazareth. It is a humorous family drama about a father and his estranged son forced to spend a day together delivering wedding invitations by hand.  Wajib  artfully weaves the realities of living under occupation into the fabric of everyday interactions\, rather than presenting overt political statements. Snippets of news on the radio\, interactions with Israeli authorities\, and discussions about the choices Palestinians make to survive all serve as a subtle but constant reminder of the political context\, offering a deep\, thoughtful exploration of identity\, exile\, and compromise. \nReleased in 2017\, Wajib was directed by Annemarie Jacir\, and won 36 international film awards.   Jacir’s new film Palestine 36 is the Palestine submission for an international film Oscar.  The main actors are Mohammad and his son\, Saleh Bakri.   \nOur screening honors Mohammad Bakri\, a well known actor and producer  who passed away on December 25.  Bakri also worked as a director\, including directing the 2002 film Jenin\, Jenin in which he interviewed residents of the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank who claimed mass destruction and the killing of Palestinians by Israeli forces during Operation Defensive Shield. The film drew a lot of controversy in Israel and was quickly banned by the Israeli Film Board from being screened. \nSponsored by the MAPA Education Fund.  The screening will be followed by an appreciation of Bakri and a discussion led by a Palestinian who is from Nazareth.  Light refreshments. \nOrder your tickets here. \n

DESCRIPTION:We present State of Passion\, a feature-length documentary film by Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi. \nAfter 43 horrific days working round the clock under constant bombardment in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s Al Shifa and Al Ahli hospitals\, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon\, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah\, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance. \nWith news footage of him pale and shell-shocked reverberating around the world\, he spoke of a catalogue of horrors from lacerated bodies\, to amputations without anesthetics\, orphaned children with no surviving family\, and the deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities. \nThis was Ghassan’s sixth and most horrific Gaza “war”.  Why does he do it?  Where does he find the strength to face it again and again? How does it impact his family? How do they process the risks he takes? The answer lies simply in their shared passion: Palestine\, a passion they articulate through their support of his perilous humanitarian work. \nFilmmakers Carol Mansour and Muna Khalidi\, close friends of the Abu Sittahs\, share that same passion.  They were waiting anxiously for Ghassan to emerge from Gaza\, following a long and terrifying journey through the night\, to meet him in Amman.  Determined to capture his raw emotions\, they began filming him the moment he arrived through the door.  Following him to Beirut\, Amman\, London\, Kuwait and Dubai\, they and he explore their common State of Passion. \nFollowing the film\, a discussion will be led by Michael Maria\, Director of the Boston Palestinian  Film festival\, and Nadine Bahour\, a researcher at FXB Harvard School of Public Health. \nThe film will be shown in the Parish Hall of St. James Episcopal Church\, three blocks north of Porter Square in Cambridge.  The location can be confusing.  If you have not been to the venue before\, please review these directions and arrive a few minutes early to make sure you find us!

SUMMARY:From Ground Zero
DESCRIPTION:We present From Ground Zero\, a powerful collection of short films by 22 Palestinian filmmakers living through war and genocide in Gaza. \nThe stories in Palestine’s Official Submission for the 2025 Academy Awards\, From Ground Zero\, capture the unyielding steadfastness of the human spirit and enduring creativity that thrives even in the face of relentless devastation through a unique blend of animation\, documentary\, and fiction. \nFrom Ground Zero was created by filmmaker Rashid Masharawi and designed to give a voice to the people of Gaza and to document their day-to-day experiences\, many of which often go unheard by the outside world. In a war-torn society\, where artistic creation is extremely complex\, the project sought to capture the diversity of perspectives of Gazans through slice-of-life short films\, ranging anywhere from three to six minutes in length. Filmmakers were allowed to tell their story through any genre and cinematic storytelling platform\, from fiction to documentary to animation. \nAfter the film we will hear from Zohaib Qureshi\, a doctor in physical therapy. Dr. Qureshi works  in Neuro-Oncology Amputee Rehab in Dallas\, Texas.  He volunteered in Gaza  and came back in March 2026. \nThe film will be shown in the Parish Hall of St. James Episcopal Church\, three blocks north of Porter Square in Cambridge.  The location can be confusing.  If you have not been to the venue before\, please review these directions and arrive a few minutes early to make sure you find us!
