Harrist – yayli tanbur\, bendir\, voice \nAt the convergence of cultures and melodies\, where traditions intertwine and harmonies flourish\, we invite you to join us for an extraordinary musical experience – “Crossroads of Sound.” This unique concert transcends borders and genres\, showcasing the shared makam tradition that binds Turkey\, Azerbaijan\, and the Balkans in a tapestry of sound. \nExperience the diversity of musical forms as we journey through classical compositions\, spirited folk rhythms\, ethereal Sufi chants\, and daring improvisations. Witness the fusion of traditional and contemporary as ancient Middle Eastern instruments such as the oud and tanbur merge seamlessly with Western counterparts like the piano and violin. The musical dialogue between these instruments creates a captivating symphony\, echoing the harmonious coexistence of diverse worlds and musical forms. \nOriginally from Turkey\, musician Volkan Efe regularly performs in Boston and is the founder of Boston Meshk  Ensemble\, a Turkish music chorus studying classical music from Turkey\, and co-created the Makam Healing Project. He is a winner of the 2019 Passim Iguana Music Fund. \nTheresa Thomspon is a multi-instrumentalist who performs joyfully and extensively throughout genres\, including Ottoman/Turkish music\, Western Classical\, American roots\, and indie music. She co-founded Crossroads of Sound along with Volkan Efe as well Tunefoolery Music\, a non-profit organization for musicians in mental health recovery. \nMusic-educator and multi-instrumentalist Michael Harrist works across a wide range of traditions\, including Ottoman/Turkish music\, Hindustani\, Jazz\, Western Classical\, and American roots music and has perfomed with various ensembles. He is founding director of Halcyon Arts New England\, faculty at Kean University\, and founder/director at Harrist Music Studios. \nJoolz is a transdisciplinary artist whose music transcends her Taiwanese-American roots\, classical training\, multicultural and wildlife explorations. A founding musician at Crossroads Makam\, Trespassers\, Global Voices Live\, she engages with diverse communities and environments to unearth new insights to our planet. SUMMARY:Music for Peace: The Formosa Duo
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 25th for a classical music experience! Music for Peace is delighted to present Cello Balm by The Formosa Duo. Cellist Sam Ou and pianist Chi-Chen Wu will soothe and excite your spirit with music by Schumann\, stir up some intense action with Barber\, and sing to your soul with Rachmaninoff. \nThis year has been full of trials and tribulations for our global community\, to say the least. Let us join together in our shared love of music\, which can certainly be a balm for such troubling times. Cello Balm\, as its name suggests\, is a concert that will focus on the cello front and center. \nAbout the Musicians: \nSince earning their respective doctorate of musical arts degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music (NEC)\, pianist Chi-Chen Wu and cellist Sam Ou have been collaborating as the Formosa Duo for over two decades. While respectively maintaining music professorships at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana and Kutztown University in Pennsylvania\, Ms. Wu and Mr. Ou have individually appeared as recitalists\, chamber musicians\, and concerto soloists in the United States\, Canada\, France\, Italy\, Spain\, Mexico\, Japan\, Taiwan\, South Korea\, Luxembourg\, Poland\, and Bermuda. They have collectively participated in music festivals including Aspen\, Tanglewood\, Sarasota\, Musicorda\, Santa Fe\, La Jolla\, and Monadnock. \nThe Cello Balm concert will play about 60 minutes worth of music\, with comments from the musicians between pieces\, and an intermission of about 15 minutes.
