SUMMARY:Women in Conflict Zones
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nOn March 19 at 12pm ET\, an important event will take place to amplify the voices of women who have been affected by conflict in various parts of the world. The Women in Conflict Zones webinar aims to shed light on the profound impacts of war on women and children and to discuss measures being taken to mitigate these effects. \nThe webinar will feature speakers from a diverse array of countries\, including Belarus\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Gaza\, Lebanon\, Mozambique\, Nigeria\, South Korea\, Sudan\, and Syria. Each speaker will have five minutes to share their experiences and insights regarding the unique challenges faced by women and children in their respective regions due to ongoing conflict. This platform not only serves as a means to share stories but also as a call to action for global solidarity and support in ending violence and fostering peace. \nWomen from various conflict zones will provide firsthand accounts of the struggles and resilience of those living amidst war. Their testimonies will highlight the physical\, emotional\, and social tolls that armed conflicts impose on women and children\, who are often among the most vulnerable populations during such crises. The speakers will also discuss initiatives and efforts being undertaken within their communities to promote safety\, healing\, and long-term peace. \nThis webinar takes place during the second UN Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034)\, which focuses on “Recognition\, Justice\, Development.” The over-representation of African countries in the list of conflict zones underscores the critical need for targeted efforts and interventions to address the systemic issues that perpetuate violence and instability in these regions. The webinar aims to bring attention to these issues and to mobilize support for African women and children who bear the brunt of wars and conflicts. \nRegister to attend. \n \nSpeakers \nOlga Karatch (Belarus); Cyrille Rolande Bechon (Cameroon); Raissa Kasongo and Yvette Mushigo (Democratic Republic of the Congo); Hanan Awwad (Gaza/Palestine); Hala Kilani Hala and Shirine Jurdi (Lebanon); Namatama Sakabilo (Mozambique); Zullaihat Muhammad Ohiare (Nigeria); Cho Young-mi (South Korea); Reem Abbas (Sudan); Oula Ahmad (Syria) \nSponsored by World BEYOND War\, Southern Anti-Racism Network\, International Peace Bureau\, Convention for Pan-Africanism and Progress (CPP)\, and CODEPINK \nCo-sponsored by MAPA

SUMMARY:Peace & Justice Conversations: Dynamic Community Resistance in West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend. \n \nIn West African cities\, urban poor families and communities must struggle every day to survive — not just to live on meager day-to-day incomes\, but to tenaciously resist and mitigate the dynamics that threaten their very shelter and livelihoods. This conversation looks broadly at over a decade of work supporting multi-pronged community resistance to mass forced evictions\, and dives deep into the struggle of the Otodo Gbame community in Lagos\, whose true story of resistance from 2016-2017 inspired the co-production of The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos\, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. \nMegan Chapman is a human rights lawyer who has worked on the ground in West Africa\, principally in Lagos\, Nigeria and Cotonou\, Benin\, over the last 12 years. The organization she co-founded in West Africa works with urban poor communities threatened by mass forced eviction using a multipronged approach that empowers residents to lead the changes they want to see in their communities and the cities where they must fight to remain. She is now the co-director of the World Fellowship Center\, supporting progressive movements for social justice\, facilitating exchange between activists\, and fostering global grassroots solidarity. \nRegister to attend. \n \nAbout NHPA’s bi-weekly Zoom Peace & Justice Conversation Series: 2020’s upheavals brought us to a new moment of reckoning and possibility. How do we want to live in the world? What do we value? How can we make the changes we’ve been yearning for? NH Peace Action has been engaged in working for change for decades. We’d like to bring you into these conversations about issues and options for the future.  There is no charge to attend\, but your contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated. \nCosponsored by NH Peace Action\, Massachusetts Peace Action & Peace Action Maine.
