Walpole Peace Wave – Standing for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
Sat August 7, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT
On Saturday , August 7, 2021 at 10:00 am, the Walpole Peace and Justice Group will join with people all around the world in a Peace Wave, calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The Peace Wave 2021 is a wave of grass-roots actions for the abolition of nuclear weapons starting on August 2 from Japan, moving westward and spreading across the world like a chain reaction, along with the rotation of the globe. As we stand in the Walpole vigil, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Japan, we will observe a moment of silence and read the poem, “Original Child Bomb” by Thomas Merton, remembering all of the lives lost and altered forever on August 6 and 9, 1945. We will also speak out, urging the U.S. to join the International TPNW (Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons), calling for the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The U.S. and other nuclear-armed states continue to compete for global military hegemony, developing new type of nuclear weapons or modernizing their arsenals. Despite such grave crisis the world is facing with, like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, poverty and disparity in wealth and gender-related problems, they do not stop pouring vast resources into military confrontations and buildup. People are invited to bring their own signs and readings. The vigil will be held at the Walpole Common, the corner of Main and West Streets.
