Nuclear Free Bay Nuclear Free World
The 39-foot sailboat, The Golden Rule, is sailing up the coast of New England during June 2023 to alert us to the need for a world without nuclear weapons and nuclear power with stops in New Bedford, Plymouth, and Boston. We are honored to welcome the crew in Plymouth with events planned for June 15 and 16.
BACKGROUND:
In 1958, an intrepid crew of Quaker peace activists sailed the Golden Rule to the South Pacific, to try to “get in the way” of massive nuclear weapons tests the U.S. was planning in the Marshall Islands. They were arrested in Honolulu, but they left a lasting legacy of action.
The Golden Rule is now a project of Veterans For Peace. A new crew is using this historic ship to advance VFP opposition to nuclear weapons and war, and to do so in a dramatic fashion. They have recovered and restored the original peace ship that inspired the many peace makers and peace ships that followed. The reborn Golden Rule is sailing once more, to show that nuclear abolition is possible, and that bravery and tenacity can overcome militarism.
The Golden Rule crew also spreads the word about the continuing dangers of nuclear power, and the poisoning of the air, water and soil from the entire nuclear cycle, from uranium mining to the inadequate storage of dangerous nuclear waste. They sail to Plymouth in support of Save Our Bay efforts to halt Holtec’s plan to illegally dump over a million gallons of radioactive water into Cape Cod Bay. NOT ONE DROP
