The Walpole Peace and Justice Group will hold a peace vigil on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
The war in Ukraine has increased the threat of the use of nuclear weapons. We call for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for the U.S. to join the International Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. As we commemorate the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombings Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we will be remembering all of the lives lost and altered forever on August 6th and 9th, 1945. We will observe a moment of silence as participants hold paper peace cranes. Participants will be welcome to take them and hang them at their homes. We will then read the poem, “Original Child Bomb” by Thomas Merton. We will have banners and signs. People are invited to bring their own signs and readings.
The vigil will be held at the Walpole Common, the corner of Main and West Streets, diagonally across from the old Town Hall.
