On the one year anniversary of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, we reflect on what has happened and on the work we have done. None of us imagined that the U.S. would back Israel to the hilt as it conducted an open campaign of extermination, but that is what is happening. MAPA Education Fund’s 2024 annual dinner will bring us together to reflect, honor the lives lost, and celebrate our work over the past 12 months to end the slaughter.
We will present the 2024 Peace Leadership Award to Dr. Lara Jirmanus. Jirmanus is press coordinator of the Vote No Preference MA campaign and a leading voice for solidarity with Palestine as well as an innovative health organizer. A Palestinian/Lebanese-American, she is an instructor at Harvard Medical School and a practicing primary care physician, community organizer and public health researcher. She co-founded the Health and Law Immigrant Solidarity Network, and during COVID, the Massachusetts Coalition for Health Equity.
We will “pass the baton” of leadership to Brian Garvey, our new executive director, and hear from him about his vision and plans for the organization. We’re excited for this next chapter as we bring young leadership into the center of our organization. Brian served as MAPA’s assistant director for five years and began his work with us in 2019. Since then, he developed and led the peace movement’s youth voice and helped lead our campaigns against the war in Yemen, the twin threats of nuclear war and climate change, and against war profiteer Raytheon.
The event will not only honor Brian and our outgoing executive director, Cole Harrison, who will continue his MAPA work as administrative director, and honor peacebuilders in the community, but will include fantastic entertainment and food to celebrate all we’ve done together in working toward peace.
