No New Women’s Prison: 2023 Campaign Relaunch

Mon January 30, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm EST

No New Women's Prison Launch 2023

Join Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls for the 2023 #NoNewWomensPrison campaign virtual relaunch event. Hear from leaders in the movement and learn about the ongoing work to pass the Jail and Prison Construction Moratorium this year.

RegisterRegister to attend.

The mission of Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls is to end the incarceration of women and girls. The organizations are led by directly affected women.

The #NoNewWomensPrison relaunch event will feature our founder Andrea James, our Director of Reimagining Communities Sashi James, our Prison Moratorium champions Representative Chynah Tyler and Senator Jo Comerford, our beloved member Ms. Angie Jefferson who was recently released from MCI-Framingham after 31 years, and our trusted partners at Jane Doe Inc: The Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence and T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights.

Massachusetts is currently planning to do a $50 million women’s prison construction project. Families for Justice as Healing, The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, Building Up People Not Prisons, and supporters have stopped this project from advancing for 3 years while pushing for decarceration of women.

Together we are organizing to pass the Jail and Prison Construction Moratorium which would impose a five year pause on jail and prison construction and expansion in our state. During that time, we will focus on releasing women, implementing real alternatives to incarceration, and resourcing communities to stop the flow of people into incarceration. The Prison Moratorium was passed in 2022, but vetoed by former Governor Charlie Baker.

We’ll share our vision of what different looks like in Massachusetts and how we can get there – starting with passing the Jail and Prison Construction Moratorium. We’ll give exciting updates from our #ReimaginingCommunities organizing on the ground and talk about community-led solutions that create real safety and wellbeing. We’ll hear from our lead sponsors what’s needed to pass the Prison Moratorium, and we’ll let you know how you can get involved with our campaign! There will be ways to take action right away.

We hope you can join us on January 30.
