Thomas Suárez’s work sheds new light on the history of Zionism and the formation of the state of Israel through years of painstaking archival research, combining intellectual rigor with a commitment to justice. As a former West-Bank resident and faculty member of Palestine’s National Conservatory of Music, Suárez has witnessed first-hand the realities of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, and worked tirelessly to bring these issues to the world’s attention. Palestine Hijacked: How Zionism Forged an Apartheid State from River to Sea is a “book of history written to influence the present” (p. 3), a goal which Suárez pursues by uncovering the origins of the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine. His research draws on the work of both Palestinian and Israeli historians, and is further substantiated by recently declassified documents from depositories such as the National Archives of Great Britain and the US Library of Congress, among others. Since many of these documents have never been released or published before now, this talk will provide genuinely new insights into the complicity of western imperialism in the occupation of Palestine.
Thomas Suárez is a London-based historical researcher as well as a professional Juilliard-trained violinist and composer. A former West Bank resident, he devoted several years to researching poorly-tapped and newly-declassified historical archives to compile the story for his latest book. His books include three landmark works on the history of cartography, Palestine Sixty Years Later, Writings on the Wall: Palestinian Oral Histories and, most recently, Palestine Hijacked. He is a former faculty member of Palestine’s National Conservatory of Music in Jerusalem and a former member of the Baltimore and American Symphony Orchestras.
*Copies of Palestine Hijacked will be available for sale and signing at 6:30PM and after the talk*
