WINSTED AREA PEACE ACTION TO HOLD CANDLELIGHT VIGIL COMMEMORATING THE 89TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1945 BOMBINGS OF HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI, JAPAN
Winsted Area Peace Action will hold a candlelight vigil on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 7:30-9:00 PM in East End Park, Main Street in Winsted to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The bombings, which killed over 214,000 Japanese people and leveled 2 cities, were the first and only use of nuclear weapons in war. WAPA members vigil to bear witness to the victims of nuclear warfare and to remind the community that nuclear weapons continue to be a threat to the security of people everywhere.
The vigil will begin at 7:30 PM along the Main Street side of the park. At 8:30 participants will be singing songs of peace joined by young people from Camp Kinderland in Tolland, Massachusetts. The camp is co-sponsor of the vigil every year. All those who are concerned about reducing the threat of nuclear weapons and fostering peace in our world, are encouraged to attend.
