Be Seriously Scared! – A film screening, presentation, and dialogue

Mon August 5 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT

BE SERIOUSLY SCARED is an evening in solidarity with the people of Japan to remember the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on August 9, and nine years later, the poisoning of 23 Japanese fishermen aboard the Lucky Dragon #5 and countless others by the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll.

This free event will take place on Monday, August 5 at 7 pm at the Main Branch of the Cambridge Public Library. The producer and co-writer of the feature film Tickling the Dragon’s Tail (in development to be released in 2026), Cambridge resident Larry Jay Tish will present the tragedy of the Lucky Dragon #5 and the Bikini Atoll. Larry shares, “Since reading Oishi Matashichi’s harrowing memoir, The Day the Sun Rose in the West, I have not been able to stop thinking about bringing this story to life on film. Oishi’s book is a firsthand account that vividly details the horrors endured by the crew of the Lucky Dragon No. 5, who were unwittingly subjected to the perilous “death ash” and the catastrophic aftermath of the world’s inaugural hydrogen bomb test. Oishi’s last words were, “Be seriously scared!”

  • Following Larry’s presentation, Michael Dwyer, the director, and producer of the awardwinning short documentary “Appreciation, The Tomiko Morimoto West Story” (and a co-producer of Tickling the Dragon’s Tail) will introduce the film followed by a screening of “Appreciation, The Tomiko Morimoto West Story”. Tomiko watched from her schoolyard as the first atomic bomb killed her mother and other family members. Thirteen-year-old Tomiko searched the devastated city for the body of her grandfather to save him the injustice of a mass burial, cremating him under mountain tree branches. She went on to marry an American GI, become a professor at Vassar College, and at age 90 has only one wish: that world leaders work together for global peace,” adds Michael about the film https://www.AppreciationFilm.com/. The screening will be followed by a Q&A, and dialogue with the audience.
  • All in attendance will observe a moment of silence at 7:15pm (8:15am, August 6 in Hiroshima) to be in solidarity with the people of Hiroshima who each year at this time mark the significance of this anniversary by observing a moment of silence at the exact time the Enola Gay released “Little Boy,” the 9,700-pound nuclear bomb, over the city.
  • Larry Jay Tish is a filmmaker, performance artist, actor and writer and resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Michael Dwyer is a filmmaker, public artist and graphic designer and lives in Upstate New York. Larry Jay Tish https://TicklingtheDragonsTail.com.
