Steven Donziger: Chevron’s Climate Hostage
Tue November 9 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST
In 1993, recent Harvard Law School graduate Steven Donziger accepted the case of his life: a 30,000-member class-action lawsuit against oil and gas giant Chevron on behalf of the indigenous Ecuadoreans whose land and water the company had violently polluted and destroyed, leaving behind an epidemic of cancer and birth defects.
Against all odds, and despite years of twists and turns in the case, Donziger, his team, and the indigenous inhabitants they represented eventually emerged victorious; the Ecuador court issued a landmark $18 billion judgement against Chevron in 2011.
Since the judgement, Chevron has gone to great lengths both to avoid taking accountability for the harms it has caused and to persecute Donziger, who has been under house arrest for over two years—treatment the United Nations has ruled violates international law.
On October 27th, 2021, Donziger—under a court order—reported to a Connecticut jail to begin serving a six-month federal prison sentence.
Join us on Tuesday, November 9th from 7:00pm – 8:00pm EDT as we discuss justice for the people of Ecuador, Donziger’s case, the future of human rights lawyering, and what you can do to help.
This event is sponsored by Massachusetts Peace Action and 350 Mass.
