War and Peace in the Age of Trump: Joseph Gerson
September 19, 2017 @ 7:30 pm
Talk on “War and Peace in the Age of Trump” by Joseph Gerson, AFSC,
Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 7:30 PM,
Walpole Public Library, 143 School Street
The continuing crisis with North Korea brings urgency to Joseph Gerson’s message. The talk is sponsored by the Walpole Peace and Justice Group.
These are dangerous days. The U.S.-North Korea nuclear confrontation is like a “Slow Motion Cuban Missile Crisis.” The recent North Korean nuclear test has only heightened tensions and the need for diplomacy. Tensions between rising and declining powers (China and U.S,) remind us of the “Thucydides Traps” that over the centuries have resulted in many catastrophic wars. NATO’s expansion and Russia’s military responses in Georgia, Ukraine and elsewhere have U.S.-Russian relations at their lowest point since the end of the Cold War. And in the Greater Middle East, the Trump Administration is committed to war without end in Afghanistan, war in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and increasingly closer ties with the repressive Saudi monarchy.
Dr. Gerson will present peaceful alternatives that would enhance the security and prosperity of the U.S. and all other nations. These life affirming alternatives, advocated by peace movements across the U.S. and internationally, need to be more popularly understood and integrated with all inter-related justice and environmental imperatives. It will be important that peaceful alternatives be promoted and embraced by our Congressional representatives and other political leaders.
Joseph Gerson is the Director of Programs for the American Friends Service Committee’s Northeast Region and the director of the AFSC Peace and Economic Security Program. He is a foremost expert on nuclear weapons and their abolition. He plays a leading role in building collaborations among U.S., Asian, and European peace and nuclear weapons abolition movements. He works closely with Gensuikyo (Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs) and other Asian and Pacific peace organizations. This past summer and fall he participated in the Counter-NATO summit in Warsaw, the World Conference against A- & H-Bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the World Social Forum in Montreal and the IPB Disarm! For a Culture of Peace! Congress in Berlin. He is recently returned from the Bikini H-bomb commemorations held in Japan. Joseph Gerson’s books include Empire and the Bomb: How the US Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World; With Hiroshima Eyes: Atomic War, Nuclear Extortion and Moral Imagination and The Sun Never Sets…Confronting the Network of Foreign U.S. Military Bases. Joseph has been interviewed by and published in numerous outlets including the BBC, Voice of America, the Boston Globe, and the Associated Press.
These are difficult times, with the North Korea crisis and with President Trump rescinding DACA, so it more important than ever that we continue to speak out and call our Senators and Members of Congress. See our Facebook page for information on specific vigils and ways people can speak out. We will be holding a vigil in the next few days in conjunction with Mass. Peace Action.
