Walk for Water 5K in Support of Palestinian Refugees
April 28, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
April 28th, 11am-2pm
South Plaza @ Kendall Square
450 Kendall St, Cambridge, MA
In times of crisis, a healthy environment provides a sense of stability. 1for3 is a Boston-based non-profit organization working to promote health, education, and the environment for Palestinian refugees. These basic human rights are the foundation for our work. Water is central and essential to our organizational history and our ongoing mission. Water scarcity in Palestine is a barrier to day-to-day functioning, but our work has helped alleviate this obstacle. Our third annual Walk for Water 5K will sustain our thriving rooftop gardens and growing Environment Unit, establish a community health worker program, continue to develop our pre-school, and extend our water and environmental education projects to new locations.
Rooftop gardens put food on the table–and they also provide refuge, calm, and security especially for the women in the camp. Water testing education teaches young and old how a little science education can go a long way for them and their families. Early childhood education offers a head start for children who have so few resources available to them. Community health workers dispense much-needed support for families with chronic health concerns, providing connections to care and thereby limiting costs and the progression of illnesses.
Are you new to the Walk for Water? In the past two years, we walked together to:
Build a cistern that has allowed our programs at Lajee Center to run uninterrupted despite water scarcity.
Make two down payments for an early childhood education center.
Design, build, and sustain 14 rooftop gardens inspiring an outside donation of 30 additional rooftop gardens.
Run 3 clinics and focus groups with local health professionals & doctors from the US to assess the health needs of residents
Support water & science education in Aida Refugee Camp through the Environment Unit and growing it to other locations.
In an area where very little is sustainable, all of our programs are thriving and growing.
Join us again to walk along the beautiful Charles River for our third annual 5K! After the walk, we’ll celebrate with Palestinian music, dance, food, and other activities to connect our communities, organizations, and families to each other.
Unable to walk? Not going to be in town? We’ll miss you, but you can still donate to one of our walkers or create a page to walk where you’ll be. You can also start a Solidarity Walk for Water 5K in your city or town like the people of Detroit, Michigan, Washington, D.C., Ithaca, New York, and Santiago, Chile have done. Email us at email@example.com for more details and we will “walk” you through it. Thank you for your energy, enthusiasm, and hope–we could not do any of this without you.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org, if you are interested in becoming a Sponsor for our Walk!
