Venezuelans Under Siege
October 16 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join us as we hear from local activists Scott Reed and Professor Kevin Young of the UMass History Department about the conditions in Venezuela, and watch Young’s recently released film about the U.S. sanctions on the country.
About Scott Reed:
The Food Sovereignty Delegation with William Camacaro of the Bolivarian Circle of New York left for Venezuela on Aug. 18th with 2 1/2 kilos of seeds to plant and money to help farmers buy farm tools. Scott Reed from Sunderland, MA was able to join William and 10 others for 10 days of assisting with passing out the seeds, getting the tools and seeing what the situation for Venezuelans on the ground is like. Scott will be giving a report and slide show of his experience.
About Professor Kevin Young’s film:
U.S. sanctions block the Venezuelan people from obtaining food and medicine. They resulted in at least 40,000 deaths between mid-2017 and the end of 2018, according to a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research – and that was prior to the most severe sanctions, announced in 2019. Venezuelans under Siege (in Spanish, Venezuela frente las sanciones) documents the impacts of the sanctions plus the ways that ordinary Venezuelans are organizing to survive the sanctions and crisis and to build new institutions of participatory socialism. Donations collected at the door will be sent to Venezuelans in need of medical care. To donate online, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/venezuelamedicines.rresrrr
