The World We Want: Hiroshima and Nagasaki – Never Again!
August 5, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Since 1980 we have commemorated the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Western Massachusetts. After a wonderful turnout in Easthampton in 2017, we will be holding the event again at Nashawannuck Pond (downtown, at the intersection of Lake St. and Williston Ave.) with a host of community sponsors. The event will be on Sunday, August 5, from 7pm to 8:30pm.
This event is not just a solemn occasion to remember the past, but also to celebrate life and our hopes for the future. There will be music from Mountain River Taiko, brief speakers including Mayor of Easthampton Nicole LaChapelle, a representative of the Nuclear Ban Campaign, and The Resistance Center for Peace and Justice. Free ice cream – from Mt. Tom’s Homemade Ice Cream – will be provided, as will origami instruction, a table for decorating the floating lanterns, as well as several community organizations.
At approximately 8:15pm, we will have a floating lantern ceremony, in which candles will be placed into the pond. Some of the lanterns have been decorated by children through the Williston Memorial Library – and attendees will also have the opportunity to decorate the lanterns during the event! We will close with the beautiful music of the Shakuhachi flute, played by Robert Jonas.
