Stop the Campaign of Terror Against Honduras’ Garifuna People by the Coup Regime
September 30 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
In Solidarity with OFRANEH
The Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras OFRANEH, and Garifuna communities in Honduras are fighting to defend their collective territories and communities, protect the environment, and improve access to healthcare and education. Because of this, they have been relentlessly attacked by powerful corporations and individuals with close ties to the Juan Orlando Hernández dictatorship. OFRANEH is demanding that the Garifuna activists kidnapped from Triunfo de la Cruz on July 18th be returned alive.
Meanwhile, the Honduran regime is using the Covid-19 crisis to increase its power through militarization, corruption, violence, and the criminalization of the population suffering from extreme levels of poverty and inequality.
- Dr. Rony L. Castillo is a Garifuna scholar and activist. For over a decade, he worked under the Secretary of Education in Honduras, overseeing bilingual intercultural education for indigenous and Black people. He holds a doctorate from the Universidad Católica de Honduras and is currently a PhD candidate in Latin American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
- Karen Spring is a human rights defender and researcher and currently the Honduras-based Coordinator for the Honduras Solidarity Network (HSN).
- Adrienne Pine is a medical anthropologist and professor at American University who has worked alongside Hondurans for over two decades. She is currently serving a sentence of probation in Western MA for her part in protecting the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington DC against ongoing US-led efforts to oust the elected government of that country in a coup.
