“Open Bethlehem” Movie Showing
August 6, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Documentarian Leila Sansour returned to Bethlehem in 2005 to film a tribute to her late father, the founder of Bethlehem University. She found a city of astonishing beauty, but with a diminishing Christian community expected to be unsustainable in a generation living in a city under occupation enveloped by political strife. The project took an abrupt turn when a cousin persuaded her to launch Open Bethlehem, a campaign that would tell Bethlehem’s story to the world. The goals: to promote it as a real and contemporary city in the Middle East and to reinvigorate its declining tourism industry. The culmination was the creation of the Bethlehem Passport, now carried by Bishop Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, and countless visitors. Filmed over seven years, Leila’s 2016 film, Open Bethlehem, is “at times funny, always passionate” and an inspiration.
The film will be shown on Wednesday, August 2nd at 7:30 pm and Sunday, August 6th at 2:00 pm in Bemis Hall, 15 Bedford Rd., Lincoln, MA in the basement screening room. The showing will be free of charge and light refreshments will be provided.
This event is sponsored by the GRALTA Foundation.
