Nuclear Disarmament Speaker Training
Mon July 18 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Monday, repeating until Mon July 25, 2022
There is an urgent need to educate the public about the growing danger of nuclear war and what we can do about it. Many of us want to help with this education but feel uncomfortable doing public speaking on this issue.
MAPA will be holding a two part, on-line speaker training July 18 and 25 to help prepare people to do this kind of educational work. Each session will last 60 to 90 minutes, starting at 7 PM.
In the first session there will be a brief sample presentation about the nuclear danger and what people can do, followed by a group discussion of the questions that audiences frequently pose at such presentations. This will be followed by short break out sessions to identify what other information people need to speak on their own.
At the second session each participant will have the opportunity to do a brief presentation of their own on one aspect of the topic with feedback from the group.
Registrants will receive a sample powerpoint and a list of FAQ’s with possible answers.
Our speaker, Ira Helfand, is the immediate past president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which won the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, and is the cofounder and past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, IPPNW’s US affiliate. He is on the steering committee of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
