5 Years and $50 Million: Why a Prison and Jail Construction Moratorium Makes Sense for Massachusetts

Thu January 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST

No New Women's Prison

In coalition with Act On Mass, the National Council, and the Democratic Town Committees of Hanson, Scituate, Weston, and Belmont, we’re holding a virtual forum on Thursday, January 20th at 7:00pm focused on S.2030/H.1905, An Act Establishing A [5-year] Jail and Prison Construction Moratorium.

We’ll be joined by Sen. Jo Comerford and Rep. Chynah Tyler to learn more about this critical legislation co-sponsored by over 40 state legislators, endorsed by over 130 organizations across the state, and recently enshrined in our state’s Democratic Party Platform.

We’ll discuss what this bill does and doesn’t do, how it would be implemented, and what it would mean for Massachusetts to invest $50 million into communities, instead of incarceration. While our state is still reeling from COVID, and our prison systems are at only 60% capacity, Democrats in our state legislature are uniting against this egregious waste of taxpayer resources on a new prison, and instead pushing for investment in recovery and healing.

We will also be joined by Mahtowin Munro of the United American Indians of New England, and Andrea James of Families for Justice as Healing and The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls. The evening will end with a Question & Answer period.

Register  Sign up to attend.
