No Deal: Where the Myth of a US-Saudi Special Relationship Comes From and Why We Believe It
May 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
A Webinar with Prof. Robert Vitalis
With the global market for oil greatly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic it’s time to reexamine the US alliance with Saudi Arabia, a relationship that is so deeply connected to the vast oil wealth of Saudi Arabia. Join Massachusetts Peace Action’s Middle East Working Group and Professor Robert Vitalis for a webinar that explores the long relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The authoritarian nature of the Saudi government, its ongoing brutal war in Yemen, increasing militarization, threat of war with Iran, and the environmental impacts of fossil fuel consumption are just some of the reasons that the special relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia needs to be questioned.
Robert Vitalis is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert on the US-Saudi relationship and its connection to the global reliance on petroleum. He is the author of Oilcraft: The Myths of Scarcity and Security that Haunt US Energy Policy and America’s Kingdom: Mythmaking on the Saudi Oil Frontier, which was named book of the year in 2006 by The Guardian.
