Hearing on State Flag & Seal and Right to Boycott
November 19, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
The state legislature’s Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight will hear testimony on two important bills on Nov. 19: Change the State Flag and Seal, which we support, and two bills that seeks to curtail the right to boycott, which we oppose.
The hearing on both bills starts at 10:30 in Gardner Auditorium. A rally for the Indigenous Legislative Agenda, a group of five bills on Native issues, will start at 9:30 on the State House Steps. Indigenous Agenda organizers will also carry out a Lobby Day on the 19th while people are waiting to testify at the hearing; meet in the lobby outside Gardner Auditorium.
Change the State Flag and Seal: RESOLVE PROVIDING FOR THE CREATION OF A SPECIAL COMMISSION RELATIVE TO THE SEAL AND MOTTO OF THE COMMONWEALTH: Form a commission to redesign the state flag, seal, and motto, which currently depict the conquest of Massachusetts from Native Americans.
Defending the Right to Boycott
An Act prohibiting discrimination in state contracts (H.2719) is a bill that seeks to penalize those who boycott for Palestinian rights. We defeated it last year, but it has been re-filed as House No. 2719. It is the very same bill with the very same first amendment issues.
An Act relative to prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations (H.2722) is a second anti-boycott bill that would add a provision to the state “debarment” law which creates a list of entities which are barred from contracting with the state based on various kinds of wrongdoing, such as certain criminal convictions. H.2722 would add to the list of grounds for debarment a finding of a violation of the laws against discrimination in public accommodations.
Come out on November 19 to testify for a change to the State Flag and for the Right to Boycott, or to listen and support those who are testifying.
