Zoom Panel Discussion of Fruitvale Station and Police Reform Efforts in Massachusetts and Boston
The film Fruitvale Station depicts the story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old from Hayward, California, and his experiences on the last day of his life, before he was fatally shot by BART Police in the early morning of New Year’s Day 2009. The movie begins with the actual footage of Oscar Grant and his friends being detained by the BART Police at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland on January 1, 2009, at 2:15 a.m. right before the shooting. Changes in policing are under consideration in Boston following the submission of a report from the Mayor’s Police Reform Task Force, and a conference committee of the State Legislature is working on a bill for statewide reforms. The lead organizer for this installment of the DWS film series, Theodore Parker Church’s Racial Justice Task Force, is bringing together a panel of local and state leaders to discuss where we are 11 years after the death of Oscar Grant, and what’s in store for Boston and statewide police reform.
