Bike Around the Bomb

August 7, 2016 @ 1:00 pm

What would it look like if a nuclear bomb were dropped in Boston (or rather, Cambridge)?

There are still more than 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world today. Many of these weapons are ready to launch at a moment’s notice. It’s time we call on President Obama and other world leaders to stand down these weapons of mass destruction and join the fight toward global zero – a world without nuclear weapons.

This year marks the 71st anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To commemorate these events and stand up for the elimination of all nuclear weapons, Global Zero chapters all over the world are holding Bike Around The Bomb events, tracing the distance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki-sized bombs in solidarity.

GZBoston is proud to join their efforts with our first annual BATB. We will be cycling the circumference of the Hiroshima bomb blast—6.5 miles—on a route which would simulate a bomb being dropped on Cambridge City Hall in Central Square, to show what a “small” nuclear blast would look like in our city, and what we stand to lose.

We’ll be gathering at 1PM at Riverside Press Park, where we will be hearing from GZBoston activists and City Councillor Nadeem Mazen before starting the ride. After the ride, we will meet back at Riverside Press Park for a quick water break before heading as a group to a local restaurant (TBA) for an after-party.

This event is both FREE and open to the public. Friends and families of all ages and sizes are welcome!

Once again, the RSVP link is bit.ly/batb16rsvp
