The United Nations Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
September 26, 2020
10:00–11:00 am, est
Sister Carol and Sister Ardeth have spent the last 25 years educating, organizing and performing actions of nonviolence at the Pentagon, White House, Embassies, United Nations, and at many nuclear and war sites throughout the United States. They have done plowshare actions at the Naval Base in CT (Weep for Children), at Andrews AFB (Gods of Metal Plowshares), at Peterson AFB in CO (Sacred Earth and Space Plowshares 2000) and at N8 ICBM silo in Weld County, CO (Sacred Earth and Space II in 2002). After these actions they have continued witness (usually with arrests) at Y-12 in Oak Ridge, TN and in Washington, D.C. The two have spent more than a combined 15 years in jails and prisons during their many years of working for justice and peace.
In March, June, and July of 2017 they joined ICAN at the United Nations and with other civil societies and ambassadors worked together for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Leading to their Total Elimination. It resulted in the strongest Treaty to date, supported by 122 nations on 7/7/17. Since that time they have traveled to many states and sites to teach the Treaty and to share ways to gain formal signatures and ratification. The Sisters moved to the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House in Washington, D.C. in 2017. Since then they have continued to march, lobby, do resistance, and speak regarding the major issues of these times.
