Crisis in the Middle East: What Lies Ahead? with Valentine Moghadam

The discussion will cover the fallout from the US/UK invasion and occupatio of Iraq, the handling of the Arab Spring protests, the new US-Saudi-Israel axis aimed at confronting Iran, and military expenditures.
This is the third program in our series on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Valentine Moghadam is Professor of Sociology and International Affairs at Northeastern University. Recently, Professor Moghadam has worked on gender dynamics of right-wing populist movements; on the interaction of social norms, institutions, and policies behind low female labor-force participation in the Middle East and North Africa; and on feminist activism as a factor in the divergent outcomes of the Arab Spring.
Born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Moghadam received her higher education in Canada and the U.S. In addition to her academic career, she has been a senior research fellow at UNU/WIDER in Helsinki, Finland (1990-95), and a section chief at UNESCO in Paris (2004-06). Prof. Moghadam’s areas of research are globalization; revolutions and social movements; transnational feminist networks; and gender, development, and democratization in the Middle East and North Africa.
Prof. Moghadam sits on the editorial boards of Politics & Gender; Gender Papers in International Development; and Politics, Groups and Identities. She was Program Chair for the annual meetings of the Middle East Studies Association, which convened in Boston in Nov. 2016.
